The Best/Worst Car You Ever Had

Take off from another thread.

Name your best/favorite car you owned and why.

Name your worst/least favorite car you owned and why.

If you are “city folk” and never owned a car you can share one you rented or rode in.

If you’ve owned cars though, please share those. I’ll be disinterested to just read stories of some random fabulous car you rode in once. Cause you know cc, someone is always trying to “win” the thread!!

Best car…a 2000 Volvo S70. Car just went and went and went…to way over 200,000 miles. I loved that car! And I sold it to a friend who drive it for a couple more years.

I bought a 2012 Volvo S60 to replace it…and I loved that car too…until it hit 60,000 and the engine had to be replaced. Volvo replaced that engine at no charge to me…but wait. 60,000 miles later, that engine failed. It had a lifetime warranty and Volvo had to do something. At that point, the car was over 10 years old. Volvo offered me a lot more than the car was worth in lieu of replacing the engine. And since the car was older, I took the offer. But I had to buy another Volvo. I have a 2025 Volvo SE60, all wheel drive…and it’s fine…as long as I don’t have another engine issue!

My husband and I have very different ideas of best cars we’ve owned.

Mine is either the Mazda MPV I had. It was a small minivan. I loved that car. 3 rows, it was easy to maneuverer. I also loved the Hyundai Elantra we owned because that car was never in the shop. It was never a driving machine but it was so reliable!

My husband’s favorite car was his gray market Porsche 928 that he went to Germany to buy and import. It was fast. Unfortunately it didn’t really work for a family who had no money and was super expensive to fix.

Our worst car was a puke green Volkswagen quantum that my fil sold us for $1200. It was a piece of junk and we blew out the pistons on that car. My husband decided to replace the engine for 3 times what we paid for it. I hated that car! It was a diesel and burned oil like no tomorrow. Other than that, it also had no pickup.

My 2nd car was my favorite - Pontiac Firebird hand me down with T Tops. Don’t remember if it was good quality or not but I looked good!!!

I’ve only owned myself one car - a 1993 Infiniti G20 - which was fine - basically a Nissan Sentra with leather seats. The engine blew and they didn’t want to pay but I stole a term from one of my MBA classes - I was in grad school when it burst and said they violated the implied warranty because their agent said it’d go at least 100K miles and one day, after shutting me down for a month, they called and said - it’s fixed and I can come pick it up. That was like 3 days after I Fed Exed the CEO a letter.

I’ve had work cars since I sold that one in the early 2000s - although I did buy my 2nd and 3rd cars last year for the kids. My son has a Mazda 3 Sedan Carbon Turbo - it’s been super as has the local dealer in Irvine (it’s nice when your dealers is legit). My daughter got a used 2021 Nissan Rogue with 25K miles - and so far so good.

So no big bills = favorite for sure!!!

Worst: Oldsmobile ( can’t remember the model), owned in college, unreliable

Since then, I’ve owned Toyotas from Corolla to Highlanders and they have all been great and done what I want: get me from point A to B.

My dad drove a Cadillac and later a Mercedes 550(?), both were so luxurious I loved riding in those cars. One of my kids has the Mercedes now.

Oops…I need to change my favorite. My favorite was a Nissan Quest. Maybe 1994 ish. I loved that minivan. It wasn’t too big and it wasn’t too small. We had it for almost 10 years, and DD managed to total it. We replaced it with a Mazda MPV that we also liked a lot.

I forgot about those!

Back in the day, there were Green Nissan Quests - everywhere!!!

Worst car: An AMC Matador (from the 1970’s, not sure what year). It was rusted badly. In 1980, on the way to my then-home (Fredonia, NY) from southcentral PA, where my three young children and I had been visiting my parents, it broke down on a deserted stretch of I-80 between Clearfield and DuBois, PA. Hardly anyone was on the road and no one stopped to help for what seemed (and possibly was) hours, and of course there were no cell phones. Finally a really sketchy guy stopped and we all piled into his truck and rode with him to a motel in DuBois. My estranged husband had to drive down to pick us up. The car’s engine was blown and the car remained in PA. I learned that you have to change the oil on a regular basis!

My least favorite car is H’s favorite car - 1988 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. He bought it used in 1993. By 1996 it needed a new engine. I believe we replaced all the power windows twice. It always seemed to need something and it rattled horribly. I was so glad when it was gone, but lately H has been saying he wants another! And that is another 1988, not a new one. He hates the new ones.

I am not one to love cars. I want it to go when I turn it on and stop when I’m done. That being said, my current 14 year old Sonata has been my favorite car. It’s been soooo good to me. I hope I’m not jinxing it, because in the last year or two, it’s definitely gotten that old car feel. But I still love it. I hope it holds together for another year or two.

My first car was my sister’s hand me down. She bought a used 1980 Mustang - the years they were not good. The inside caught fire 3 days after she bought it!

My old Saturn was my worst car because it did terribly in the snow and we were living in the Syracuse area at the time and we had over 200 inches in our first winter.

My favorite car was my Saab 9-3 Aero, stick shift, black on black. I loved that car!

H’s favorite is our current car - BMW X1 M. For sure the best SUV we’ve owned for the fun to drive factor.

@deb922 we had a MPV and loved it. The vehicle of my kids childhood! Cried when it died.

My favorite car on looks and great to drive would probably be our Mazda Tribute. The perfect little suv. That girl lived a long life! We also had a Toyota Tercel which was early in our marriage and we felt like it was modern and sporty.

Least favorites: We had one official “mini-van” - Pontiac Transport - i hated it.. We also had a Renault Alliance - was sort of a “car of the times” when it came out …until it wasn’t. It was SO basic. But it was a great green color that I loved!

My husband had a Triumph Spitfire when I first met him but he got rid of it shortly after. I think he would say that was his favorite. I never got to ride in it. Got my first kiss from him in his groovy Chevy Monza - Michigan State colors, emerald green and white!

Best: 1984-ish Pontiac 6000 STE. It was sweet.

Worst: Big, light blue station wagon that I bought for $600 in 1976. I have no idea what year it was, but it was old when I got it. It was an ugly gas guzzler, but it got me where I needed to go. I gave it to my twin brothers (a year younger) when I started college.

When D1 was born I was driving a Bronco II. The next year H decided we needed a bigger, safer car so we bought a new 1992 GMC Suburban. H worked for Hughes Aircraft (they were owned by GM) and we got employee pricing which gave us almost 20% off at the time. I loved this car! We could seat 9 (bench seat in front) and still had room for carrying cargo. When the girls started school I could bring all of their friends in our car. I told H when D1 was born that I did not want a minivan. We replaced this the 1992 Suburban in 2003 with a new one that we drove until 2018.

But my true love car was the 1967 Chevy Camaro Rally Sport that I bought in 1977 with money saved from working in a taco shop. It was the coolest! My boyfriend at the time drove a 1965 Mustang which he restored.

Fave is my Chevy Bolt EV. Love that thing.

Worst was the Honda Odyssey that tried to kill my husband by randomly putting on the ABS in the middle of the freeway when he was going 65 mph.

I loved my minivans. My sil thought they were so not cool! She drove a Toyota sequoia. It was way too much car for me.

I was so happy in my not cool, 3 row minivan. Our last one was a Honda odyssey that met a tragic end with a deer on I-80 in PA.

Now I drive a Subaru which I like but don’t love. It rattles.

Glad they have a lot of options but the boomer in me wishes the minivan was still cool! They don’t make that many anymore, everyone wants a huge suv

Another Mazda MPV carpool driver! I liked the look and the handling of that car but it was not without issues. Required $6k of repairs but thankfully we bought an extended warranty for it so $0 out of our pockets! We traded it in for the very first edition of Lexus RX. That was our favorite. I’d buy another in a heartbeat but dang Lexus made the grill so hideous looking… it is a hard nope for us.

I still miss my minivan(s) as well. When we came home with our new Pilot my son cried because he missed our minivan and my daughter cried because she thought we came home with yet another minivan. The 2018 went from the boxy design to the more minivanish look.

https://pin.it/27goajLe3 Not sure if you can see the photo, but this was both the best and worst car I have owned. It was the best because I was 16 years old and had a car to drive and I thought it was so ugly it was cute. It was the worst because it was in horrible shape. In the winter it would snow inside the car from the condensation and eventually the brakes were shot. I had many happy adventures with my friends in that car!

I had a love/hate relationship with my BMW X3. I loved the drive and how it picked up speed quickly on my freeway on ramp. That on ramp is how I judged every car I ever test drove. I hated that the battery would randomly die. Every repair was $$$.
I strongly disliked my Toyota Sienna minivan. The sliding door would randomly get stuck open. The dealership service department was terrible. We kept that car till my son wrecked it as a teenage driver. I was so happy to be done with a minivan.
We have had two Toyota Land Cruisers. One of my kids still drives the 2001. It’s been a great car. We also have a 2014 Land Cruiser that we don’t drive regularly but it’s my favorite car to be a passenger in.

OMG, I had similar for my first car - see below, Volkswagen Squareback. I had totally forgotten how TERRIBLE it was in the winter and yes, the condensation had me stopping every couple of miles to scrape it INSIDE to be able to see to drive!
