The Biggest CC Homers...

New College = public Ivy. UF = party school.

I bash Duke quite frequently on these boards, but that is because I go to UNC. Makes perfect sense to me.

-sigh-

-10char-

“I bash Duke quite frequently on these boards, but that is because I go to UNC. Makes perfect sense to me.”

You “bash Duke quite frequently” because of jealousy and a supreme inferiority complex. All that time and energy you spend “bashing” Duke could be used to promote your own school. Then again, if I attended a school that’s not ranked among the top 25 universities in the country and the top 100 universities in the world, I’d have very little to brag about. “Makes perfect sense to me.”

"When I think of “homers,” I think of people who promote their school unprovoked. This is not a bad thing in moderation, since they obviously know more about those schools than we do.
Prevalent examples:

 • Johns Hopkins (Phead128, Hope2getrice)
 • Rice (slik nik)
 • Holy Cross (par72)
 • William & Mary (swish14)
 • Brown (modestmelody)
 • Wisconsin (barrons)
 • UT Austin (JWT86)
 • Georgetown (toast eater, vienna man)"

How could you miss Hmom5 and her beloved Dartmouth, lol

The only time I’ve ever heard of “homer” used to describe someone was as a homosexual.

Here’s the definition of “homer” in this appropriate context:

Homer:
Someone who shows blind loyalty to a team or organization, typically ignoring any shortcomings or faults they have.

Harvey Mudd!

Live by the USNWR ranking, die by the USNWR ranking. Just like Dook lives by the three, and more frequently dies by it.

Jealousy? What is there to be jealous of? UNC is ranked higher than Dook in several academic rankings, has better sports teams, a nicer campus and isn’t located in the ghetto that is Durham. Our girls are actually hot; Dook’s have a reputation for looking like soccer moms at 19. UNC is just an all around better institution, and I’m proud immensely proud of UNC, the best academic institution in the state of North Carolina.

^ Get a thread, you two.

Apparently, the authors of this book are a couple of CC:homers.

[Amazon.com: The Public Ivies: America’s Flagship Public Universities (9780060934590): Howard Greene, Matthew W. Greene: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Public-Ivies-Americas-Flagship-Universities/dp/006093459X#reader)

Some who are considered “Homers” are just proud of their schools, and some (like me) feel the ranking systems are faulty and unfair to their schools. For example- someone posted that Washington is a “superior” school, but based on standardize test scores, the student body of the UF undergraduate population is in higher intellectual class.

2008 Florida SAT = 1270 (~1300 for the 2009 freshman)
2008 Washington SAT = 1210

<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board;

I’ve said it before- the rankings really UNDERweigh the quality of the student body. I think it is ~7.5% in US NEWS. Students spend FAR more time interacting with and learning from wachother than they do in class.

Having said that- I can say that personally, I still keep my impartiality. As evidence, here is a thread where I attempt to expose Florida’s race based admissions policy which I feel is wrong on many levels.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/525312-sat-race-university-florida.html</a></p>

So, by the above definition of a homer, not all of us who are proud are actually homers!

What good is a “better” student body if you have the worst student-faculty ratio among major colleges? I’m not paying all that money just because somebody got a 1300 instead of a 1250 on the SAT. Every decent large college has plenty of smart people to meet and compete with. UW also has a better graduate school overall which attracts lots of better grad students who are usually more interesting anyway.

Barrons,
Please post some evidence that student faculty ratio, as measured by USNEWS adds to the quality of education.
