The Bragging Thread

Hi! If you don’t mind me asking, what was the school?

I went to CrimeCon (convention for True Crime addicts like me) this weekend and I got free parking for 4 of the 5 days! First day I parked at the park and ride ($7) and shuttled to the hotel but it was kind of a hassle, so I thought I’d suck it up and pay the $20/day. Second day I think I exited through the employee exit by mistake. Free. Third day I took a ticket going in , parked, but the gate was up when I went to exit. Fourth and 5th days, they were taking money going in and I said ‘I have a card’ (I got it from a restaurant in the resort but just read it wasn’t good during events-whoops) and they just waived me through.

Score! (and used $$ for tee shirts)

I somehow managed to follow various steps and links through various apps to get all of the cycling routes I need for our upcoming trip on to my cycling computer with no help and no cussing.

Weird flex, but here goes…

I made so much fun of people that used essential oils because I abhore anything MLM (Multi-level Marketing). I saw some ads from a legit (non MLM) company about frankensense used for pain relief. I’ve had nagging elbow inflammation that was driving me nuts as it wasn’t bad enough to consider an injury, but still annoying enough to interfere with lots of things. I decided to order some and threw in a bottle of another oil and some hemp carrier oil to get free shipping. The other oil was supposed to also be good for soothing tired legs when mixed with the frankensense and as a bonus diminished varicose viens.

I mixed up a small bottle of all my new oils and have been using them for a little over 2 weeks. While I rub the oil on my legs, and they look amazing, I have to say, that my hands look like the hands of a 20 year old. I kept staring at them wondering how it happened until I realized it was from the oils I was using.

I had spinal surgery on Sep 2. Foraminotomy to clear out some of the bone growth around the nerves. Fusion from the pelvis to L2 to straighten out the corkscrew that was my lumbar spine. And some procedure to take a divet out one of the vertabrae to straighten my posture. Complications in the surgery so it took 7 hours instead of 3-3.5 as expected. Lucky to have worked to find one of the best surgeons in the country.

Overall, not fun. The fusion restored some of my height. I was 6’ 1.5” when I played college volleyball. The week before surgery, I was measure at 5’10”. I think I am back to 6’ with an incredibly straight spine. My muscles revolted at being stretched an extra 2”. And nerves that were blocked are now firing. So, it was very hard to sleep for two weeks. But, unlike the total knee replacement I have before the Pandemic, I am not in muhc pain, if any.

Now, however, I am walking about a mile a day. I was cleared earlier this week to go up stairs and to use the stationery bike (apparently the best exercise for me). I’ve gone from 8.5 minutes to 12.5 minutes and will try to get to an hour. I’m cleared to drive short distances and to fly, neither of which I’m going to do. I’ve begun to rejoin some of my most important work calls, thought I find my acuity starts to decline after 30 mins.

Although full recovery will take months, I feel like I am way better off than I thought I would be.

ShawWife is under a lot of pressure as a museum where she is having a show is moving up the opening by 2.5 months and she needs to complete ll work for the catalog 2.5 months sooner than expected (in about 2 weeks). So I am trying to function as independently as possible so she feels comfortable working.

My D, who just finished college in May, started her 1L law school year about five weeks ago at a pretty competitive school. To say the least, it has been overwhelming. The good: the profs are all truly amazing. Her constitutional law prof won a Supreme Court case a few years ago that proved the innocence of a Mississippi man who had been on death row for two decades. Another once clerked for Sandra Day O’Connor. They are tough but seem to genuinely care for the students. My D has already started making a nice group of friends and always has something to do on a Friday night. But she’s always exhausted and the search is about to begin for summer internships already, adding to the pressure.

Today was a very good day. Most law school courses have only one do-or-die exam that makes up the total grade at the end of the semester, graded on a curve so that, even if you do very well, you could still be ranked low in the class relative to others….and that has a great bearing on your summer placements and job offers. Kind of a brutal system (and I feel sad for anybody who studied hard and knew the material but made a low grade). It’s a huge amount of stress, especially for 1Ls who are getting used to a completely different teaching method (Socratic questioning on cold-calls in class) and have no idea what the tests are like, or really, how best to study for them. D’s school is trying to remedy that by encouraging some profs to implement one small test relatively early on (only five percentage points of the total grade)

D has been especially anxious about all of this because her LSAT score (considered the biggest predictor of law school success) was a good bit below the median, despite her fine GPA. D got her grade from her torts mini-test today….she was so nervous she waited until the class was over to look, and she said her hands were shaking. There were five possible points on the already-curved grade. Her result? 4/5! She is ecstatic and so, so relieved! The only critique was that she could have added more detail to her solid reasoning. She said there was a strict word limit (which will not exist on the final exam) and that was the only reason she didn’t write more. I’m sure there will be exams she doesn’t perform this well on and the struggle will be ongoing. But now she knows she can do this, and that is a very big thing.

Sent son several new dress shirts and, miraculously, he shared that they fit as if tailor made for him; it is the first time in a decade or so that he has been able to button the top button around his neck.

I’m envious as the only shirts that I can button the top button are tailored made and very expensive.

As a sidenote: Just read a poster from a 1975 Ali-Frazier boxing match that listed their neck sizes as 18” and 17.5” which surprised me as being quite small given their profession and size, but is an advantage as both could buy shirts off-the-rack.

We were having a large family gathering in Vegas over the weekend. My 24 yo daughter was coming from Memphis. Tons of delays all day and she missed her connections in Phoenix. She was going to miss the Saturday night activities and possibly the important ceremony on Sunday morning. So she ran to the car rental area fought to get a car and drove 5.5 hours from Phx to LV by herself.

I will never question the determination of my children.

Congratulations to your daughter !

UBE or specific state ?

Not sure. :woman_shrugging: She’s in MN. I seem to remember her saying that whatever she took means that she is able to practice in 17 states so there is some measure of reciprocity.

They are both grown, both independent, and both with great partners. One has kids, one is getting married in a few months. AND. they have a fantastic, supportive, loving relationship with each other!!! They have integrated their partners into a full circle … including siblings (their SIL’s and BIL’). They have come to each other rescue in some really bad times.

They have a whole relationship independent of H and I.

My parents always said one of their greatest hopes and biggest wishes is the my Sib and I remain in a healthy relationship. I am beyond grateful my kids are doing exactly this.

And I hope they remain geographically close…currently less than 20 minutes apart

I’m going to take a bit of credit.
