Yes, you’re partial to sexy cheerleaders.

It floats up and down on my list more than any other school. I like California, it has good Econ, good sports, etc., I’m just a little concerned about the 5% OOS, that’s all. We’ll see, if I get rejected at S, Y, and P I’m going to road trip it with my friend to LA, he’s going to visit USC before he commits.

Everyone is partial to sexy cheerleaders.

Well besides that, obviously.

If I couldn’t laugh at myself I’d be dead right now.

I can laugh at myself about some but not all things.

I mock myself more than laugh at myself. I’m pretty sure that’s a meaningless distinction.

I need a magic money wand for college. Anyone have some extras?

April will be such an easy month but then May and June will suck.

Question. JB and Mike, how soon did you start working on college applications? I know the common app is typically put up in July, so in theory, you can start writing your essays and whatnot then. Earlier, even, since the prompts don’t really change but you know what I mean.

Also, lots of top colleges accept either the common app or their own special application, so I was wondering if either of you filled out the special applications or just did the common app?

I’m probably not making very much sense.

I started my Stanford essays junior year, lol. I threw them away a bunch of times, but I thought about them all summer. Most of my main essays were done by mid-December-ish, but a few I did last minute replacements because I came up with better ideas. However you plan to do it, just give yourself lots of time, because you’ll spend a lot of it just sitting in front of a blank screen.

And I used the common app wherever possible.

I’ll be in the hospital in July, which means volunteering in June.

MY apush teacher has told us that if we haven’t started studying by now, don’t bother since we’ll fail, basically. Well. Sucks for me then, I s’pose.

Well, you can really start on your Common App essay now. The last prompt is always “Topic of your choice,” so go for it. Your three languages thing would be good for the Common App essay. I wouldn’t really start filling in the information that soon, but make sure you have a nice and comprehensive list of your credentials.

I started my Common App essay in August, I believe. I didn’t really finalize it until October, when I submitted my EA applications.

Just do the Common App. Don’t mess with their forms. Most of the colleges that still offer their own applications only have the paper versions. Just do the Common App.

The most important thing now is to talk over your choices with your parents. It sounds dumb, but I was in for a surprise in August when I showed my parents my list of colleges and they got mad at me for picking colleges on the East Coast. Make sure your choices are going to be financially feasible. I doubt you’ll have much to worry about for admission, but a few early acceptances are important.

Graduation is Memorial weekend here, so June will be smooth sailing for me.

How many long essays are usually required per college? I know one goes with the common app, and I think some “supplements” ask for a second one, but are there ever any more than that? Because I already have an idea for two essays, one of which I’m really confident about.

Edit: Yeah, I’ve started talking about my college choices with my parents. I honestly couldn’t afford to go to college in the States without a generous financial aid package. I mean, tuition and everything is 10x more per year than it is in Canada. That’s basically why I’m really only applying to top colleges in the States, because they’re the only ones who give financial aid to international students.

Also, something that sucks is that I’m sure I won’t get as many scholarships as I could normally get because the IB is bringing down my average. Only by like 2-3% but it’s still bringing it down.

College. What the eff am I supposed to write about in my essay? I DON’T KNOW THESE THINGS.

n00b.

Oh, and apply to any school you think you might want to go to. By the time March rolls around, you don’t want to think about schools you wish you’d applied to. Oh Georgetown, where were you in my life?

Usually 1-2 longer essays, with some short ones mixed in. I mostly just tried to make the shorter ones funny, besides for my Common App EC essay, which was badass, if I say so myself.

Mine were all under 500 words. Some have specific requirements; others don’t. My OSU one had to be under 400 words, and I know I had a few short answer types that were under 300 words. On the Common App essay, I think somewhere between 500 and 750 would be perfect.

I have three major ECs, with lots of minor ones, so I’m not sure about how I should package all of that.

Silly US. I hope you all realize that it takes 45 minutes to apply to any given college in Canada. Max.

What makes an essay badass? WHAT DO I DO I FEEL LOST ALL OF A SUDDEN.

I’m feeling more and more lost. But it’s okay, I’ve survived the over half of the hardest school year of my life, and now I just have to plow through the rest.

But you’ll be fine, Snoop.

I CAN’T BE FINE IF I DON’T KNOW WHY I’M FREAKING OUT.

qwert.

I make an essay badass.

If my theory is correct, you don’t need to package yourself at all. I have completely unrelated ECs. On my apps I emphasized how I liked animation, econ, math, and baseball, and how I wasn’t really a joiner/organizer/leader, that I preferred to read about things and just think. As cliche as it sounds, I just presented myself how I really am. In a couple of weeks you’ll know if this was a brilliant or disastrous strategy.

I CAN’T WAIT A COUPLE WEEKS.

G’night.
