The Cafe Watering Hole

All the biggies then, I guess. Visit Columbia, that way you have an excuse to go to New York. Yale? Brown? I don’t know, what you’re looking for in a college?

Harvard Barnard Chicago Univ of Rochester Rice Case Western Brandeis Union

That is my list.

O.K., from that list, I’m going to suggest… Pomona/Claremont McKenna? I know they aren’t in the NE, but they seem to sort of go with your list. Also, Amherst. And if Barnard, why not Columbia too?

Wow, there isn’t one coherent thought in there.

Urban and not too small. That’s what is nonnegotiable. And if I visit Barnard I’ll most definitely visit Columbia. I figure a nice jaunt through NYC and Boston will be good enough. Maybe roundabouts through Rochester and Buffalo to see family. My parents said they don’t care as long as we have a plan.

Oh, and don’t go to Bowdoin. My uncle teaches there and he’s kind of a D bag, therefore the whole school must suck.

Edit: Never mind, just saw the urban thing.

The claremont schools are close to LA, the weather’s really nice there. How about BU?

Perhaps. I have about a week plus drive time. Plan my trip for me.

You should see some bands while you’re there. I never got the impression that many came to the middle of nowhere, Tennessee, or wherever it is you live.

Here’s your itinerary. 3 day drive to Stanford. 1 day spent worshiping. 3 days driving back.

You lucky duck. I had to plead with my parents to let me visit Cleveland. It’s a TWO AND A HALF HOUR DRIVE. Ridiculous. I looked into taking the bus there, but I’d have to go Toledo to get on, and that’s already halfway there. Then the fare is $30. That’s a bit crazy to drive an hour and half, if you ask me. In my car, I could drive to Cleveland and back for that price, even with gas the price it is. No wonder nobody uses public transit in the US. The train would be nice, but it only leaves at 2:10 am. The arrival in Cleveland would be at 6:20 am. That’s waaaaay too early to arrive in a city like Cleveland. I want daylight when I visit there.

On Friday I have to tell the second graders at my school all about Toledo, Spain. It will be just peachy. I really despise the fact that I go to a K-12 school, since I can’t stand kids. They’re icky.

I think 4 days in New York and 3 days in Boston will suffice. I haven’t been on a vacation since I was… 10. To Disney World. This is partly my vacation, so might as well get in some sight-seeing.

Snoop, are your parents workaholics? I know mine are. I haven’t had a family vacation since 2001. All the vacations I’ve had have been through school and whatnot.

JB, you guys are getting ripped off in Ohio. Here you can take the el to places three hours away for $2.

They don’t have the kind of jobs that normally define workaholics, so not really. But they’re cheap. But they want to send me to the best possible school they can.

Ah. My dad is a mechanic, and my mom works in a deli. Yeah.

It must be nice to have at least one Asian parent. You and Mike will probably disagree, but eh. My mom still wants me to go to the community college so I can stay home and help her clean the house…

JB, let me explain grade expectations in my house. All A’s, and the reaction is, “That’s nice.” One B is, “What happened?” Two B’s is “What the hell happened!?” And three B’s is my dad having a coronary.

Your mom wanting you to stay would kind of suck though, I admit.

One B is … unimaginable. Because it hasn’t happened yet. Because I don’t want to push it.

I was almost put into a special ed class in elementary school because I had trouble concentrating. But then I got better.

My parents used to put pressure on me to get good grades but then, when I started to, I started putting pressure on myself so they basically stopped.

Most I’ve ever gotten was 2 b’s in 7th grade. I’m hoping not to reach 3.

Yak, I try to tell my dad that I’m on top of my grades, but he just can’t help himself.

Well, my parents still do expect good grades. Both of them had something like 3.8 GPAs in high school. And they constantly harp on my brother for getting B’s, since I never did. I think the last time I’ve had so much as an A- on my grade card was in 8th grade, for art class. I can’t draw to save my life. Anyway, that just means your parents are supportive. Mine want me to be successful, but in a different way. My mom said we need to get good grades so we can get the Presidential Scholarship at the community college, making it free. I might give it more thought if my community college were worth two Canadian pennies, but it isn’t. It doesn’t offer anything more than my high school does. And I go to one tiny, backward high school.

I have 6 chapters to read for apush.

That’s unfortunate.
