The Cafe Watering Hole

Halloween isn’t fun when you lack friends who live less than an hour away.
Well, I have friends closer, but we’re definitely drifting apart, simply because I’m a goody-goody nerd and they’re typical boy-crazy rebellious teenage girls, so we have nothing in common. So basically, I went trick-or-treating by myself, prompting several adults’ concerned “So you’re by YOURSELF?” and one kid yelling “You’re gonna get raped!”
…yeah. Halloween wasn’t very fun this year.

Dear. Lord. Have. Mercy. Upon. Me.

I just got back from Chicago, and I made the mistake of telling my parents about how the people driving took a wrong turn. Since they couldn’t figure out where they were, I took over the map. I got us eventually to the hotel (at Midway), but the only way to get there was via 55th Street. And we took the 73rd Street from I-90. So Mike, you know what that means. We went through quite possibly the worst neighborhood in Chicago. Well, maybe not the worst, but it was unlike anything in my county of 40,000 people.

So anyway, I was telling my parents about this, and I was met with yet another argument about my future. Apparently, my whole life will be like this. I’ll take a wrong turn and end up in the slums. But hey, I enjoy that. My parents say they don’t care what I do, but they always have all these “words of caution.” Ever since I told my parents I want to live in the city, they have just been really hostile about anything I say about the city. I might as well have told them I’m gay. I would have gotten the same reaction.

So, in any case, I love Chicago. I want to live there someday, just not anywhere near 73rd Street. It’s still a tossup on which I’ll do first: Toronto or Chicago.

That doesn’t sound fun.

Show me the meaning of being lonely. Is this the feeling I need to walk with? Tell me why I can’t be there where you are. There’s something missing in my heart.

Toronto, duh. To meet Michael Cera and our elusive Canadian friend.

I must sleep. Good night. My TAs must be saved for another time.

JB, all you had to do was take 55(The highway, not the street) all the way to Midway, there’s an exit right by it, Archer or something. Or you could’ve just turned on Garfield, it turns into 55th. You silly Ohioans. And it’s definitely not the worst neighborhood, but it’s not somewhere I’d be wandering around with a bunch of white band kids from Ohio.

Who needs sleep? You’re in college! You don’t NEED sleep!

I just ate wayyyyy too many Reese’s cups.

Yeah, Mike, I know there were easier ways to get there. But my map didn’t have all the streets on it. It was really one of the worst maps I’ve ever used. It was just a map in an old atlas.

The official way was to use I-80 to I-294, and get off at Cicero and then head north to Midway. We took that way coming back. It was someone’s genius idea to leave Chicago at 5:15 pm. While Cicero isn’t really that bad at rush hour, it certainly would have been easier had we stayed in the city for a little while longer or something. I’m convinced the I-90 way is better. You see more of Chicago that way. And apparently, I was the only one in the vehicle who knew how to read a map. The driver couldn’t even figure out the MapQuest directions. (On a side note, the driver of my group kept calling it “Siss-eer-ee-oh.” I was quite amused.)

And you’re right about the white band kids from Ohio. My brother is currently very upset over his whole Chicago experience. He thought the whole entire city looked slummy (even downtown. Huh???) And we took the train back to Midway from downtown, and there was this creepy homeless guy that started begging for money. Apparently that was something new for everyone. Actually, he really freaked me out at first because he said, “I apologize for what I’m about to do.” I thought for sure he was going to blow up the train. But then he started this whole rant about how he wants pennies, until some old guy shouted “Go to the Salvation Army!” Then he went to the next car.

I love Chicago.

This was an actual ROFL. You’ve watched way too many movies, JB.

Add blue food coloring to 7UP. GFs get weird over it!

College, puh.

I can’t wait to live in a city. I won’t have to be polite anymore.

I’ve started to confuse Spanish, French, and Croatian.

That’s a problem I’ll never have to deal with. I just submitted my Stanford Supplement. AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I just submitted the common app. Stanford is officially out of my control. This is terrifying.

I hope I end up going to college in a bigass city

High School Musical 3 actually wasn’t terrible.

Except that Zac Efron kept looking directly into the camera and freaking me out. And songs that use the movie’s title in the lyrics (repeatedly) are really obnoxious.

But some songs were okay enough to merit a “worth the discount student price of admission if you see it with friends.”

I live in a big city, and I feel sort of like going to college in a smaller one. Not a town, but just a smaller city.

I think it’s really creepy when actors look directly into the camera. In Weeds, Shane starts “talking to” his dead dad, and he usually looks into the camera when he does it. So weird. The fourth wall shouldn’t be broken, silly writers.

You stand corrected. I have seen hardly any movies during my lifetime outside of the typical Disney suite. I do watch the news way too much. Trust me, I was much more knowledgeable of the ways of the city than many of my peers. I, for instance, knew that one must waste no time in getting off the train. A couple of trombones were lolly gagging around after it stopped, and they almost didn’t get out before the doors closed. Silly country kids. I also knew that it’s certainly best to avoid eye contact with others, especially on the train. There were too many people that messed up in that respect.

Submitting college apps is very nerve-wracking. I was a basket case after I submitted my UChicago application.

Ben Affleck needs to permanently replace Keith Olbermann because that was effing awesome.

I regularly catch people staring at my in the subway. I just stare back at them until they look away. Works like a charm.
