Here is one route that few on CC discuss: scholarships, grants, etc. awarded for military service, including ROTC, the GI Bill and various grants. For example, under the Post 9/11 GI Bill a student who enlisted for a standard contract earns full tuition at their in-state public university, or up to $27,120 toward private tuition. When I was in the program was different; I paid $1,200 while in service, and was awarded $440/month for up to a four year degree (calculate the ROI of that investment!). Some states also have veteran’s grants. For example, IL offers a veteran’s grant that pays tuition and fees for a full four years. Many other states have similar programs.
The DOD also has arrangements with various universities for active duty service members to work towards their degrees while serving. These are often online programs that will fit the students schedule, and even if they do not finish the degree while enlisted, the student can transfer their credits to an accredited university.
