The Citadel vs. VMI, Compare and Contrast

This summer, I read a couple Pat Conroy’s works, including the Lord of Discipline and The Boo. Conroy, a Citadel graduate, makes some passing references to the rivalry between his alma mater and the Virginia Military Institute.

As a Catholic, liberal, Democratic northerner, I thought the two school to be interchangable (southern, public military schools). I asked around and did a bit of research on the Internet to compare and contrast.

Now I am asking members of the forum to compare and contrast VMI and the Citadel. Any impressions would be welcome.

For my two cents and for whatever it is worth, my impressions are that VMI has a national reputation and is seen as a stronger than average liberal arts school.

The Citadel, on the other hand, has a much stronger regional reputation; and its alumni network is much stronger than either Clemson or the University of South Carolina.

Any other comments?

I could answer some VMI questions for you but all I know about The Citadel is that my son applied there, was accepted, chose VMI instead. I would be more than happy to answer specific VMI questions for you

VMI is much more popular…
