@toowonderful agreed-re construction, wasn’t actually commenting on any one person specifically :). the good thing is that almost everything runs through or near Penn station & pearl is a 3 block walk.
Yes citymapper app is great! We used it last year and it tells you exactly which entrance to go in, train to take and which exit to go out. Highly recommend it. Also, will give you "live time " it will take for walking, bus, Uber and subway to your destination. Break A Leg and have fun!
My favorite for NYC navigation is the City Mapper Ap. Just plug in the address or even the point of interest (like the New Yorker Hotel) and it will give you potential routes, the time it will take you, rough cost estimate, and when you’re on the subway, it even vibrates your phone to tell you that you’re stop is coming up soon. For a non-NYC resident, it makes navigation pretty easy.
@carriemc95 I think it was an error in how it was set up through Acceptd. I emailed and they said we needed to pay it, so I did. D’s audition is Sunday in NYC…
Big storm hit in 2016 during Chicago Unifieds as well and some faculty left early. Luckily, my D was able to move up an audition so she didn’t miss any. If I recall, a storm was headed to the Chicago area last year, too, but I don’t know if it affected auditions. It can be SO tough to re-schedule. Safe travels to all this weekend!
@NYart15 last year, we almost missed my d’s on-campus audition in Michigan. We had a flight the night before (couldn’t go any earlier because she had a performance at her HS), and the flight was canceled in anticipation of the snow (in Michigan). We managed to get an early morning flight (NYC to DC then transfer to Detroit). When we got off the plane in DC, we got a text that the next flight was canceled! We scrambled to get another flight, then had to drive to Ann Arbor in crazy snow (being a NYer, I wasn’t worried, but the roads aren’t as plowed in Detroit, apparently).
Anyway, we were in touch with the school during every twist and turn, and they said they’d see her as long as we got there by a certain time. We made it! She was scheduled for the last dance call of the day anyway, and got her monologue/song in before that (with time to spare). We did have the option to reschedule for the following one (but she had another audition scheduled that weekend, and were really trying not to do two in one weekend (the other was Ithaca). My advice is, have the emails and/or phone numbers of the contact people handy, in case you need to use them.
Question to all of you so familiar with the type of weather that is hitting the NY area. We are coming in from the West Coast…taking a red eye Friday night because of school commitments (first audition is not until Sunday)…and arriving around 5:00 am. Staying close to the studios…but will have big suitcases since we are there for 6 days. I have been freaking out how to pack…since our “cold” is a brisk 50 degrees…but I think I have that covered. Given the weather expectations, will Uber still make the trek from JFK into midtown? Any recommendations? Trying to remove at least one stress in preparing how to make this work. Thanks!
@luvbloominroses - Uber will still be running, but if it’s already snowing, prepare for surge pricing. I would recommend a cab (taxi bank at airport) or a car service where your price is settled In advance. We have used Carmel Limo in the past for D.
I agree 100% with @toowonderful. I will confess that, as a lifelong NY’er, I have never used Uber. On the rare occasions when I need to take a cab, I hail one. I would use a licensed taxi from the stand at JFK because there is no surge pricing. There are always plenty of taxis.
Break a leg at Unifieds.
BAL to everyone headed to auditions in NYC this weekend!
Just waited 2 hours outside in line, in the snow, at the combines in NYC. Didn’t get a spot! Just saying to those for next year, if this event is important to you: get in line before 7am!
After a hiatus to deal with life, I am back online…been reading a few days, but just now am having a chance to post. After getting through the funeral and the holidays and much discussion/debate, my D has decided to forge ahead with auditions (at least for now) with a gap year as a definite backup plan. She is still suffering from major anxiety, depression with some panic attacks thrown in for good measure, but we are doing everything possible to help her. She is working with coaches for confidence building and therapy for the anxiety. So we will let the chips fall where they may. I do worry a little about her ability to handle multiple rejections, but she knows it is part of the business and may be fine. She has a harder time with people disappointing her than schools and auditors. Her Dad and I have let her know if she wants to quit the audition process at any point and wait until next year we will support her. Luckily the schools she is most excited for are her last four auditions. So maybe the earlier auditions will help calm the anxiety. And she is doing a mix of MT and VP.
@NYart15 @lithpool @KAT67 @NYYFanNowMTdad @MThopeful99 @katzenbogen @MToverload @mtnyc19 @BWmama @artskids @artsmomof4 @Twelfthman (and anyone else I may have missed). Thanks so much for all of your support! It really means a lot to have a community that understands the journey and will support you no matter where life leads. Things certainly have not gone as hoped or planned, but what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger! D mourns the loss of her friend and her Granddaddy, but wants to finish what she started for them, because both were major cheerleaders of hers!
Break legs to all who are auditioning at NY Unifieds and on campus this weekend!
Best of luck to your D @MTSongbirdMom! She will gain strength and confidence once she gets the first few under her belt!
@MTSongbirdMom, best of luck to your D. She is very lucky to have such a kind and supportive network focused on healing and recovery.
We’re all rooting for you, but just wanted to say I love the gentle way you have all decided to lean back into this process.
@luvbloominroses We are also from the West Coast, and currently here at NY Unifieds. I am probably just cheap, but we always use subway or Long Island Railroad. Easy, cheap, and rarely affected by weather. We lugged in lots of luggage last night, but it was pretty easy ?
agree with everyone on Uber & cabs, will be plentiful…there is also an Airtrain from JFK to Jamaica Queens at which point you can catch LIRR or Subway, there will be almost zero chance that you can not get into the city from the airport IMHO. welcome back @MTSongbirdMom some how someway I suspect this will make daughter stronger throughout her career, not ideal at all but a "silver lining"in a dark cloud, I believe.
@mtnyc19 thanks for that combines update thats the kind of stuff us " underclassmen" really need to hear about, sorry for the 2 hour wait in the snow for nothing but appreciate the update.
@toowonderful good point… I spent a lot of time in NYC in the early 2000’s before every phone had GPS. But I do use the public transportation piece of Google Maps a lot.
Break A Leg NYC Unifiders… but not literally, because you know, the snow.
@mtnyc19 This morning was crazy at Combines line.
I’m sorry you didn’t make it.
I woke up this morning at 5:30AM and was in line at 6:15 AM and there was a line of at least 10 people. My D was at the hotel getting ready while I was doing the line.
The worst part was waiting outside with this weather. For next year folks, be there at least 7AM.
Funny story: the person that was in front of us arrived at 8 AM, she paid a gentleman to do the line for her at 6AM. He waited for her in place until she arrived.
Got to combines at 7:00 and got an audition slot there were at least 30 in front of us
