The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

Just remember that just because a school is non-audition, does not in itself make it a safety school. “Safety school” is a relative term to the applicant. The school would have to be a sure bet safety in terms of their academic profile, acceptance rate, etc.

For example, Brandeis and Northeastern are not safeties for many students, but could possibly be for some.

By the way, Hofstra has a MT Minor and is worth a look.

@ROW78LBB83 I got an email confirmation not long after Labor Day confirming our audition date for 11/11.

@loribelle, DeSales in PA also has a BA Theatre non-audition program. It has an MT Performance track. It’s also a free app!

Fairleigh Dickenson in NJ also has BA Theatre with MT Performance Concentration as well Also a free app! Guidance Counselor said they are very generous with $$ too.

My son received his audition confirmation from Baldwin Wallace but he is doing a February date.

Someone made the comment about letting the kids take the lead on school choice, and I have to say that although it is only the end of September, I’m really enjoying the experience so far with my daughter. We have always been close, but this process has allowed me to step back and allow her to completely take the reigns. We just spent two hours at the mall trying to find clothes for auditions and headshots. There were times that I was was ready to get frustrated, only to think to myself…this has to be completely her choice and her experience. I can’t get frustrated because she doesn’t like a certain shirt that looks awesome on her…if she doesn’t feel awesome in it, it won’t come across the right way in the photograph. I’ve raised this girl to know what she wants and be independent, and this will be her first step towards moving towards her new life that she’s always dreamed of. When I thought of it that way, I almost got teary-eyed because I’m just so darn proud of her already.

I’ve seen Bowie State on the list a couple times, but in looking at their website there is no mention of a MT concentration. There are zero schools here in Maryland that offer at MT degree.

@ROW78LBB83 They are pretty good about responsiveness at BW. D received confirmation of herr February audition fairly quick. Have you paid the audition fee? They won’t schedule until that’s paid. Or check your spam folder. Otherwise, I would contact the conservatory admissions and ask if they are missing anything.

@carriemc95 Thanks for sharing your moments. I know you are proud of your D as I am of mine. She wouldn’t be who she is without you! Enjoy every minute!

Thanks so much for sharing safety schools! This group is so helpful!!!

Hi all. My D is a Freshman Musical Theater major at Point Park. I was just thinking about how crazy life was for us this time last year and thought I would circle back to CC to see how things are going for people! It’s a very long, tiring process, but when you hear your kid tell you that she is right where she needs to be, it makes it all worth it! Hang in there, take lots of deep breaths and try to enjoy this process with your kid because before you know it, they will be off to college!

My son received confirmation for the 11/10 audition date at BW, a few days after submitting the application.

Hi @jenniferm1973 How is your D doing? We know a sophomore at PP and she loves it!! Life is definitely crazy right now and tensions can run high - lol! But, we are hanging in. We actually just did our PP app this week and scheduled for NY Unifides. Got our first academic acceptance this week and have 4 auditions scheduled before Christmas. Now, if we could just get pre-screens filmed…

Thanks everyone! My S got his confirmation for 11/10 at BW. BAL to everyone! Thanks for all of the advice. I love reading the board!

@NYKaren my D is doing well! She loves her classes! Yes, I remember how tense things got. Her PPU audition was actually the first one she did last year, early Fall on campus. We did Chicago Unifieds in February and many others inbetween! Yes, the prescreens are so important! Good luck!

@NYYFanNowMTdad Post #152. Here is the link if I coped right - this list will help you find safeties in your area too.

@MTdreamz - thanks so much for making it easy

Just know that there have been changes to that list since it’s been published. For example, University of Alabama Tuscaloosa now offers a BFA in Musical Theatre, as well as Anderson University in South Carolina. Some of the schools show to not be an audition school are now requiring auditions. This is a great starting point, though!

My D’s first academic acceptance came today. It’s so weird to not be able to celebrate like the rest of her friends who receive those big envelopes when that’s just the first hurdle…

Yep - I’ll add a couple of additional changes I noticed. University of Minnesota Duluth is an audition program now. Has been for a couple of years - no longer an audition after freshman year program. Additionally, CAP21’s 2 year program no longer exists. The program is now a four year BFA through Molloy/CAP21.

@carriemc95 @speezagmom just to clarify, is there a more update list or just make edits to the list as they roll in like this?

You could also search Big List of MT College By State on CC and you’ll get another helpful thread. The above document posted by @MTdreamz goes above and beyond with additional information which is great.

Also, Western Connecticut State now offers a BFA and offers in-state tuition for a number of NY counties.

yes there is a newer program at Florida Southern I hear too - not sure if it is a BFA…that list is a few years old so should definitely research them if interested. We focused on schools in the mid-Atlantic region, mostly around Ohio and vicinity, and the schools with advanced dance opportunities.
