The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

I’ve asked this on the general 2019 Parent thread but no one is in the same boat. S19 submitted applications to CMU, Hartt and Ithaca quite a while ago but has received no communication from any of those schools since he submitted the Common App. He’s gotten portal information from most of the rest of the schools he has applied to or at least an email acknowledgement that the application was received. Has anyone else’s child already applied to one of these three schools and if so, did he/she receive any communication since then? My concern is that there is a glitch on the Common App end of things and if so, I want him to follow up.

@mindatwork - go ahead and have him call admissions to follow up. My mantra last year was “better safe than sorry”. When/where is he auditioning at CMU?

@beachymom, he hasn’t submitted his prescreens yet so that depends on whether he passes. But he’d like to audition on campus in January.

He is very resistant to calling unless it’s absolutely necessary, he thinks they’ll put in his file that he’s annoying or has a helicopter mom or something like that. Since this is his process, I’m trying to respect his autonomy but it’s a constant struggle with my Type A personality of “please just get it done!”

@mindatwork - let me know if /when he auditions on campus. If he’d like to meet a current student, maybe we can hook him up w my s.

@mindatwork, my daughter followed up with most of the schools 2 weeks after submitting. So far, about 70% of the applications were missing information (and some were submitted through the common app). I’m not sure if it’s because she is homeschooled, but apparently, missing files are the norm for some people. Missing info included sent SAT scores (where the college board had to check with the school), transcripts (despite the school confirming they got them), etc.

In any case, I’d highly recommend checking because in our case, the applications would have been incomplete without the follow up…

@MTdreamz, I can speak to Florida Southern a bit. We’ve looked extensively into that program. It is indeed a BFA and is about 5 years old. The head of MT is Dr. Christianne Roll and she is wonderful! NYU trained, etc, etc. We visited the program last summer during our Disney vacation. Lakeland, FL is about 40 minutes outside of Orlando and seems like a great college town! Dr. Roll spent over an hour with me and my DS and had him sit in on a freshman level class. They seem to be a program that is voice primary, which would work well for us! They are a no-cut program, as well (unless it is a disciplinary issue, of course). They offer junior internships in the West End and with SETC. The campus had several Frank Lloyd Wright designed buildings and is beautiful. It is right on Lake Hollingsworth. It is a small school with about 2,500 students. You have to submit resume, headshot and rep list when scheduling audition, but there is no pre-screen this year. Dr. Roll said that she thinks they may have to go pre-screen by next year. My son really liked the program and we have already applied. He found out yesterday he was academically accepted and his on-campus audition date is 12/1. Please let me know if you have any more questions and I’d be glad to help if I can.

@mindatwork, my DS has applied to Hartt. We did receive communicaiton back from them, but it originally went to the Spam folder :open_mouth: . My DS discovered this because he was getting nervous that we haven’t heard back from them. Check the spam folder! We are auditioning 12/5.

Do any schools without prescreens allow you to book your audition date if the high school hasn’t submitted all required items yet, or does the application need to be ‘done done’ in order to book an audition date? (We are in CT & school only started this month, so although we may be prepared, the school is just starting to gear up). Thanks!

@lithpool - in 2014 - we were able to schedule all auditions as soon as "our’ parts of common app was finished (including supp. essays etc) whether or not teacher recs, transcripts etc had been submitted by guidance

@lithpool We did manage to book several auditions this fall without a complete application. We also started school this month so home school transcripts are not expected to be finalized until October.

@mindatwork Perhaps you can tell this to your son…I’m a college counselor and recommend that all my students check with their colleges, a few weeks after submitting their application materials, to find out if their application is complete. The only exception is if the school has notified them or has a portal indicating which materials have been received (or not). There are often glitches, and it behooves a student to double check everything to make sure the college has their materials. In other words, this is a very common call to the admissions office and would not be looked at whatsoever as negative annoyance from a student. It is to be expected. Checking to make sure one’s admissions file is complete is an actual item I have on my students’ record-keeping chart for this process.

@NYKaren when did you hear back from Hartt? My D submitted everything back on Sept 4th and has been checking her spam and regular folders regularly and today is 3 weeks out from when she submitted her pre-screen materials.

Hi @lithpool, you can definitely schedule audition dates without the HS sending in the transcripts or recommendation letters. I’m in NYC, so we’ve only geared back up here a few weeks ago too. Sometimes you have to wait for a link to be send back to you from the school after you’ve submitted the app, so it might not be immediate (I’ve noticed that these links can take up to 24 hours to come, after my son panicking that it is “lost”). But you can definitel get some auditions scheudled and on the books. We have 5 or 6 early ones.

@MTVTmom, just checked my email folder for Hartt. I got it 24 hours after the supplementals were sent in. I would call them or have your son call. It’s hard for my son to call because of his school schedule and cannot use his phone in school for any reason what so ever. If you call on his behalf, just tell them your calling for him because he’s in school. They understand and don’t mind.

@NYKaren thank you - we did get a confirmation after she submitted her supplemental and picked the 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices, but when confirming they had everything after getting that, they said they would not actually start assigning audition dates until mid-October. I will reach out to them and just confirm we are not missing an email confirming one of her dates. Thanks for the info and good luck to your son!

Yes. That’s what the confirm says. I’m sorry. I thought you didn’t get any communication from Hartford at all. Sometimes when you send in these supplementals, you feel it goes into a black hole if the school doesn’t have a log-in portal to check on things! So, I understand the nervousness with this stuff. Hope they confirm the actual dates soon! Break a leg to your daughter as well!

@mindatwork I would encourage him to call just to ask when they will be sending prescreen responses. It’s not needy, and honestly, about 10% of the time my D was not getting some kind of next-step response when she went through this, we found that there was a missing piece (i.e., they had the prescreen but not the supplemental essay, the recommendation letters but not the writing sample, the audition request but not the secondary application…) There’s so much variety that it’s easy for them to overlook something, and the spaces do fill up, so unless he’s calling every week, I am sure he would not be placed on the pest list, lol. If it makes him feel better, he could call and lead with a non-pestering question, such as when is a good time to schedule a visit, how to go about getting show tickets during on-campus auditions, how to sit in on a class. Those show interest, not neediness. And, they are probably not burnt out about the calls the way they will be in a couple/few months.

Happy to celebrate a “safety” acceptance. My D was admitted into Emory & Henry for their BFA MT program and got a nice merit aid offer and invited to audition for a theatre scholarship. Takes a little pressure off of the auditions, but only a little. Made her hungry for more.

I would encourage a polite phone call to Hartt to follow up. There’s nothing wrong with a follow up. We contacted them at least twice last year with follow up question or two and found them to be extremely helpful and friendly…
