The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

@MToverload I wonder if that’s why we haven’t heard anything. Completed now but I guess we will have to wait till at least next week.

@collegeboundSam wise words from your son, indeed. I seem to agree with someone’s POV for saying something right now, then someone else’s for waiting and now your’s for not saying anything at all! All of you have had valid points. I just wish it hadn’t happened in the first place, darn it! These auditions are hard enough as it is!

@mommyMT I’m so sorry your D had to go through that. I echo @BWmama comments.
There’s absolutely no reason for an adult to behave in that manner.

While I agree, it’s a small circle, the path our children are going, I still think it’s important to let the school know, politely and constructively… probably not your first drafted letter! Lol (it’s not funny…but I know what my first draft would sound like, and my words would probably be much worse than what the instructor wrote!)

@mommyMT I think in this instance, something has to be said. These are educators who people are entrusting their children to. This is not the cold, hard, real world of theater auditions quite yet. This is a college setting and the educators should behave like teachers. If the letter is sent in a professional manner, I see nothing wrong with it.

@frisbee3 regarding Montclair, if you auditioned in Nov you may want to contact someone there. When my D auditioned there we waited FOREVER for some contact & it was crickets. we finally contacted someone and got the “no thank you but please attend for something else” response finally. I found them to be very unorganized that year and it does not appear to me they have improved jmho. My daughter’s friend had the same experience.

D got a waitlist for University of Northern Colorado!

@MToverload wow, we have been waiting too- we accepted the OOS but I thought the Yes/No about attending was to be done after we know the artistic decision. So it is required to answer so they give the artistic decision to us? We are sure of a no, so guess it doesn’t matter.

@frisbee3 if you look back at previous threads, you will see that Montclair is notoriously disorganized and unresponsive. Last year my D was academically accepted in November, auditioned on campus in January and they went silent for months. Finally had to email them to request a decision…when they responded, they directed D to the portal, which was a no for MT. I hope you have a better experience.

@HancoK01MT I am a mom-survivor of a Gap Year kid: It was THE best thing that has happened to her; the way that things transpired, and that she dug in and persevered, her second year of auditioning. Now she is a blissfully happy 4.0 GPA rehearsing for her first mainstage musical lil’ nugget. She wanted it THAT bad: She was willing to do a second grueling year of prescreens and auditions and rejections to get where she is now. And she is super grateful. I don’t check in here very often; but PLEASE-for you and any other parents and students mulling the thought-I would be happy to provide further insight.
That said-a gap year is NOT for all of our kids.
And also-you’re not there yet. Break legs on any last minute notifications & auditions!

@collegeboundsam You have a wise S because that makes a lot of sense…cuz it sure would be nice for someone like that to get their comeuppance…just sayin!

I agree with collegebound Sam. Everybody knows everybody and they all talk just like here. I suggest printing off a picture of offender and writing the same descriptive word on the picture. Then attach it to a dart board and take aim. A good way to relieve stress and manage any anger.

OMG, mommyMT. That is inexcusable. I am so sorry your daughter went through that. It took a lot of backbone for her to perform in her dance audition after that. Respect to her.

frisbee3: I think I’d give it at least another week, maybe two. Everyone’s under a lot of pressure right now, including the program heads.Your anxiety is TOTALLY understandable, but that’s what it is – just anxiety. File is complete; now you wait. My gut feeling is that being a squeaky wheel probably won’t help, and might hurt.

@NYDreammom That’s what we thought too, but apparently they wanted that one answered. It asks about whether you will still attend if you don’t get your program choice. Anyway, she wasn’t holding her breath for them anyway as it wasn’t a great audition for her.

@MToverload Thanks, we’ll do it to get our No and cross that off:) It was my D’s worst audition, and we are fine with it.

Not only does my son not have an academic acceptance to Montclair yet, he hasn’t even been sent a link to set up a portal. I asked him to follow up on it yesterday but he showed little interest. Maybe next week.

I just typed up a big long thing: Defending FSU’s program. My D made me promise to “quit” CC once she matriculated into a BFA MT program; and I have been pretty well behaved  But I HAVE to say-FSU was one of TWO schools of 16 that reached out to ME, a CC mom; and offered to provide notes on my D’s audition. And they were (incredibly, actually) the ONLY program who offered my D a spot in their amazing Summer intensive-knowing that she was going into a Gap Year, rather than a high school year. FSU BFA MT rejected her twice. But she would not be where she is now WITHOUT that experience. Her current MT Director is an FSU Alumnus; and was there at that Intensive. Rejections suck. And if your kid has a bad experience, they can cull THEIR list, just like the schools can. I think that it’s important to not slam programs on CC. The MT/Acting world is remarkably tight/small. And all of our kids need varying degrees of tough love, nurturing, etc.

I have a question about Montclair “portal” and the same question can apply to U Hartford. With both schools my daughter submitted her application and we were given links to “check status”. Both only show a list of items needed for the applications (and all items are complete). Is there a step after this that we missed? Hartt was months ago and Montclair was last month after a walkin.

@CaliMTdreams Montclair had a “status update” and you clicked on “view update” which was a link to a letter. My D got an email saying there was a status update with link to portal. Her Hartt one is exactly like you said, nothing new after audition.

@frisbee3 coincidentally we attended the open house at Montclair arts day TODAY… Clay James said specifically that they can not release their decision until academics( admissions) decision was made and that BOTH admissions and MT decisions are rolling…he also said they really have no power with the admissions dept and that he thought admissions sent weekly notifications about what was missing…so sounds really odd that your academic decision would still be in limbo. Hope that is helpful?
