@theatrework- Do we know if the Huffman/Macy daughter was auditioning for acting or MT? If I had to guess, I would bet she was wishing for an acceptance at UCLA because I heard the dad was advocating for a gap year, during which she would pursue acting/performance in LA. I think the mom wanted her to go to college, so UCLA would make a lot of sense for someone like that, since they won’t consider lower stats applicants.
@jbrown I am posting here in case someone else is interested… Oklahoma Central University has one April 4th and I was told Alabama at Birmingham usually has an April dates
@soozievt - I have been on these boards since 2013 and didn’t know your story. God bless you and your daughter for surviving such a horror, and for thriving despite it! By sharing your story, you have put this process in its proper perspective- thank you.
@soozievt - Wow. That’s a great story (with thankfully a happy ending) to put this all in perspective. I’m wondering if you don’t recall the angst of the waiting time because you were preoccupied with your daughter’s recovery? I do recall last year when my S was going through the process that there was just as much angst on these boards during the waitin period.
@jbrown Sam Huston University on April 5 https://www.shsu.edu/academics/theatre/auditions/musical-theatre/Audtion%20Infomation%20for%20Webpage.pdf?language_id=1&fbclid=IwAR1tpeyf3xE9ckqIPjyvB-BgjREZosX3ZrBHNfirSLU904-VB-IpCIdzNig
@soozievt Thank you for the dose of healthy perspective. It is a nice wake up call to what really matters in life.
Agreed, @MomofJ5 - I was totally unglued at this time 5 years ago!
Well, her accident wasn’t until March 13 (today’s date) and I’ve see TONS of angst here the past few months! So, maybe I am forgetting a bit, but we anticipated it was going to be a long time until we heard from most schools and so didn’t get too caught up on the admissions decisions until later in the cycle. That said, before my D’s accident on March 13, she already had a deferral from Emerson, and acceptances from Penn State, Ithaca, and Syracuse. So, she had acceptances before being in the hospital. She got the NYU acceptance (the invitation thing) while in the hospital. She got the CMU priority waitlist and the BOCO acceptances when she was back home again. For sure, while in the hospital, our minds were on much bigger things. But it was already March 13 when it happened and so she had some results already. I’m not saying we were calm as a clam, but I don’t recall the level of fretting for this long of a block of time to this level of intensity so much. Sure it was on our minds a lot! But we knew it would be a wait. Again, I think social media adds to the frenzy here a bit. I read CC. But we didn’t have Facebook and there weren’t these FB groups for the kids who were applying. My D had theater camp friends from other states going through the process and that was that.
Anyway, I was just trying to encourage those going through this stressful process that there is a bigger picture and each and every acceptance and rejection is not going to be such a big deal six months from now. Most kids will land at a college. This crazy process will be behind them. College admissions is one small step along the way. The main thing is for each student to be happy at college, thrive, and make the most of the experience. That can be done anywhere. A nice fit is important, but hopefully lots of thought went into building a college list of schools the student could be happy to attend. Once you get to the other side and your kid is happy at college, these other little details won’t matter so much! Things have a way of turning out.
@“boola boola” Then, your son was in the same pre-college program as mine at CMU.
sorry to keep posting @jbrown but here is a list I got from someone in the know! haha

@soozievt I had no idea! Thank you for sharing your story it definitely puts a lot in perspective. I was from class of 2021 and I think there was probably a fair amount of worry then as well. By the way my daughter and I saw a very unique production of Twelfth Night this past summer! We loved it!
Believe me, I worried too! This is indeed an overwhelming process!
I guess I am reading parents checking portals every 5 minutes, opening mail, whatever, and then appear on edge every second. I don’t recall it to that degree so much.
Also, my kids did not get results via portals. I only recall one result via portal…the CMU Priority Waitlist. Actually, CMU had a little angst because I read on CC that those accepted got calls and then there was a date when everyone seemed to get their “no” on the portal, and my kid had no result at all. Days went by. Apparently, back then, the Priority Waitlist kids were notified later than the “yes” and “no” kids.
Otherwise, I recall my kids getting snail mail results or email results.
One memory…older D…who applied to highly selective colleges, but these tend to tell applicants ALL at once on a particular date and let students know that date ahead of time (I MUCH prefer this!!!) and most did this either on April 1 or a date in very late March…which as I said, we knew we were in for a long wait and so didn’t focus on it so much over the winter until those dates rolled around. I recall my D was going to hear from 3 colleges at 5 PM on a certain date…via email. Well, I had to be at the dance studio with my other kid (the MT one) which was far away…we lived in a rural area…and so the parent has to stay through the dance classes. We also didn’t get any cell reception where I lived. So, the whole ride home from the dance studio 25 miles away with younger D, I was thinking how older D just got 3 major college results via email and we did not know what she learned until we walked in the door. Luckily, she got two acceptances to two of her favorites and one rejection (after having been deferred earlier). But imagine, she knew the results and I didn’t because we didn’t have text messaging and so on! Just not the same!
@MTdreamz you are a bloodhound!! Thank you. This is a list of great schools!
@MTdreamz That’s funny! I didn’t even think of that, but I bet that bumped him right to the top of the CMU waitlist for a GAP YEAR acceptance!!! LOL!!!
I remember this period of March 2014 VERY well - it was for sure an agonizing part for me - as my D did not have any acceptances from the earlier notifying schools - we were waiting for the chips to finish falling.
@soozievt - I’ve not been here as long as you have, you are for sure the queen, but I have read every thread posted on this forum and the acting forum since 2012 (I think I may need a 12 step program)… maybe part of the drawn out angst comes from the fact process of notification seems spread out longer. I teach HS -participate in applications etc every year. There have always been rolling admissions …but it “used to be” that the big clump of notifications came over maybe a 2-3 week spread. This year it’s already been dragging out for nearly a month. So some people get early choices, and that is GREAT. But there is a lot of limbo left out there.
I do think the staggered nature of some notifications make it worse… props to the schools who rip the band aid off in one clean motion.
My point is - hang in there guys. I know you FEEL like you are going crazy (heaven knows I did - DANG that was a dark period) but it is temporary insanity. You and your darling kiddos WILL get through it, and no matter results are - this is only one phase of the journey. Just keep swimming
@jbrown Nazareth College has one more audition on 3/22. I believe you do not have to aply first to schedule.
@soozievt Wow, that puts it all into perspective. This is such an overwhelming process that it is easy to lose focus. My D turns 18 today, and I can say that all of my thoughts this morning started off with the day she was born and looking at photos and how wonderful it is to see that she has blossomed into a beautiful, smart, kind, crazy, whacky, talented young woman. Didn’t even think about this process until I sat down at my laptop and saw the CC window.
Thank you for sharing you and your daughter’s journey.
Is anyone going to Webster preview day? Would love to take D, but hard to justify the trip when we don’t even know if she is accepted, much less for MT. We are planning visits to her accepted and waitlist schools during spring break. We keep getting emails about it and I wondered what others were planning to do.
@7CHDals Exactly what my D2 did last year. She had acceptances to both MT and Acting but the Acting schools were much higher on her list. She is at BU and plans to do the MT concentration. She is very happy with her choice!
@soozievt bless you and your D. My D1 was in a horrific accident two summers ago and had to be life-flighted to our local trauma hospital. The initial report? She wasn’t going to make it. She made it and she did return to school but has lasting issues from the accident, some of which require accommodations for certain classes (movement in particular). It has certainly changed her (and my) perspective on many things. This time shall pass; enjoy the journey.
