The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

@mtmom2019 we are in the same situation with NYU. The email with the ID # came on 10/15. I may have her reach out to the school soon.

@afterp89 Thank you for letting me know about Point Park!

@mtmom2019 and @ac2680 I called NYU Tish yesterday and they informed me that right now, the audition schedule portal is open for Early Decision applicants only. In a few weeks, they will open it up for Regular Decision applicants, and an email will then go out.

@love2share thanks for posting! I was wondering about that as well.

@love2share Thank you for the information!

Hi all.
Just checking in to say hello and offer support. I remember well the intensity of last year, and the push v pull of preparing/applying/prescreening. I also remember the anxiety as families await prescreen results and attempt to navigate the craziness that is “audition scheduling”. Break a leg to all of your children, and to you - their faithful supporters! As long as you have a balanced list and a contingency plan, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Promise.

@love2share Yes! Thank you! My daughter called admissions yesterday and they told her it would come “soon”. It good to know it won’t be for a few weeks.

@BrennaK @ac2680 @MTMom2019 You’re welcome! The person at NYU Tish did say a few weeks, but who knows, it could be sooner.

4 prescreen rejections…zero passes so far. D already applied to 18 schools, but getting so many rejections without any passes makes us feel like we should add a couple more schools to the list. I am trying to have faith that what is meant to be will be, but it’s hard to see D’s heart crushed over and over again after working so hard for many years. Hoping to get a “yes” soon!

@hfstt201 Oh my gosh! So sorry to hear. I know it’s disheartening…sending you positive vibes to turn the energy around to get some YESSES! If your instincts are to add more schools, then do so…the performing arts is so competitive.

@hfstt201 I am so sorry. Adding some additional schools was exactly what we did after four rejections. Try to stay positive.

Sending positive vibes to all of you waiting on pre-screens. It’s a tough time. Try to plan something that will keep you and your child busy after auditions are done in early March because if you think it’s hard to wait for the pre-screens, just wait til you have done everything you can do and you are waiting possibly until the last week of April (or longer if you’re on a wait list).

This is my D’s 2nd year with this process. Last year, we were very unorganized and slower with prescreens. We were also super selective with where she applied (only applied to 5 schools). She ended up deciding not to go to the 1 school she was accepted to because it wasn’t a good fit for a lot reasons. This year, submitted prescreens super early, went to an audition master class and she feels so much more prepared. And, she’s applying to 21 schools.

All of that to say, even knowing this process is emotionally exhausting, it is still emotionally exhausting. I wish I’d known about this board last year! What a great source of support, encouragement, and lots of “ugh…us too”.

@hfstt201 Hugs to you and your D. We’ve had 1 rejection so far, but waiting on a lot of pre-screens and just hoping that some of them are passes. This is such a hard process and it’s just the beginning. Sigh.

I found these boards to be INCREDIBLY useful (although stress-inducing in some cases). I wish I had learned of them earlier in the process the first time; had no clue about CC until after all auditions were done. It would have helped with perspective!

@NYYFanNowMTdad - thanks for the kind words. I stay (I have even thought I’ve overstayed at times) because I found invaluable support here during my D’s process. @artskids and I had kids on a BFA run at the same time - she can attest to the fact that I went beyond stressed to borderline psycho - perhaps because I was reading CC already and knew what D was up against. Stay strong everyone -my garden variety midwestern ingenue ended up with 3 BFA offers to choose from (and remember she had what would be called a TINY list of 7 audition schools), went to a school she loved - and is supporting herself in NYC. It CAN be done!!

@hfstt201 I have a story for you…A friend of my daughter went through this process last year. She had great news with prescreens, getting yes’s from each school she applied to (10). However, when the actual acceptances came out, she got no after no after no. She had done ONE walk in at LA Unifieds “on a whim” and received her single acceptance from that school. It turns out it was a perfect fit. She LOVES it. Fate will put our kids where they need to be and your D will shine wherever she ends up.

Also, I’m of the opinion that wherever my daughter ends up, she will get the training she needs. After graduation it will be up to her how her career goes. So while I feel pressure and stress for her to get in to certain schools, or to pass certain prescreens, I know that she’ll get in “somewhere” and it will work for her. (lol…rose colored glasses…)

@loribelle Thank you for the comment about walk ins. Her plan is to do at least one at each Unified (LA and NY) depending on her schedule. We are hesitant to pack the schedule in advance, not knowing how this all works and how much time is truly required for each school.

Note: My daughter’s upbeat song is so obscure it has been absolutely impossible to find any digital accompanist for her prescreens. It’s not an easy song, and her pianist friends balked at playing it for her. She has rehearsals every night until 10pm and has ZERO time to meet with an accompanist in the evenings to work something out. We were starting to seriously stress out, so I thought there had to be somewhere online that could send us a digital file. Sure enough! I found one - we sent the music to him this morning and we had a 16 and 32 bar cut in an MP3 file by 4pm today. If anyone else finds themselves in this situation - check out www.playthisforme.com. Very reasonable and saved us from our stress!

@afterp89 and @love2share my D is a junior MT at Point Park. One of her roommates is a BFA acting major. There is a lot of cross over - MTs act in the plays, BFA acting majors perform in the musicals. All students use the playhouse. I can’t speak specifically to the BFA acting program, but I know my D loves her acting professors and feels that she has grown leaps and bounds in that area.

@CTDramaMom Thanks so much on the feedback on Point Park!
