The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

My S has 14 auditions scheduled so far and they are just about evenly split - three on campus from now through December. Three on campus in January and February. Five scheduled so far for NY Unifieds and three scheduled so far for Chicago Unifieds. He is still waiting for some prescreen results but we have specifically left open spots to schedule those if he passes.

We are also driving to all of the auditions, we’re just centrally located enough to make driving the most reasonable option. Reading some of the travel horror stories that happened last year makes me nervous but we’ll get there one way or another.

@MTRound2 wow! I thought I was a driver! I have a 2010 car with 275,000 miles on it - mostly due to my d’s MT dreams. I hope you guys get a mild winter - we live in Ohio and almost didn’t make it to the CCM audition last year due to snow in January. And I think a PP Audition day was canceled.

Also, at Unifieds if you don’t have a half day block audition you can schedule 4 in a day. Most last 5 minutes! But give some time for paperwork and delays.

I can’t imagine how we could have done 4 in a day! Between the dance calls, the available options (because everything fills up quickly!), and the ones that required a block of time but didn’t make that clear, it was a stressful time!

@librarygirl8 when we signed up there were many open slots. We were even able to move things around when conflicts arose. They don’t all have separate dance calls and a couple of them were at dinner time. She did 7 1/2 auditions in 2 days. This included 2 blocked sessions (Pace and Ithaca). And she saw Hamilton Tuesday night before the drive home LOL yes it was stressfull but we were trying to get out of there so we didn’t spend a fortune.

@mindatwork - driving can be stressful - but I recommend it b/c then YOU have the power.

@MTdreamz Driving to auditions and the time spent in the car is my favorite part of this whole process. When my son auditioned 2 years ago it was the last time it was just him and me on an adventure, and I so look forward to spending this quality time with my D. And I have to hope that the weather and the car both last the season! There are more auditions and more driving this time around for sure. The realities of having an MT daughter. And we’ll be driving to or through Ohio quite a few times in the next 4 months. BW next weekend. CCM after that. Keep the snow away, ok?!

@MTdreamz We drove to all auditions last year and the weather was definitely a challenge for some! We also saw Hamilton on the Tuesday night  It was a wonderful break from it all!

@MTRound2 Will you see Cabaret when you are at BW?

We drove everywhere last year, and got very lucky on weather. I will have all my fingers and toes crossed for you guys that the weather is good this year! I agree with @toowonderful , driving gives you the power. I cannot imagine the stress of delayed and cancelled flights on top of everything else - not to mention the possibility of picking up whatever illness is being carried by someone in the plane. I also agree with @MTRound2, the time in the car with my son was my favorite part of the process. Even though we were driving 10 hours or 15 hours sometimes, we had fun. I will cherish those last trips that were just the two of us before he headed off to college.

We take a lot of road trips in general so we’re prepared. S and I already decided that in addition to the usual license plate safari that we play on each road trip, we’re going to have one going for the entire audition season. Maybe we’ll finally get both Hawaii and Alaska in the same game!

Ok, so I see a lot of people planning to drive. Both my D and I both hate flying so we really wanted to drive but we live in Southern Florida so just to get out of the state is 7 hours. What’s the average amount of hours that you all are driving to get to auditions?

FYI–UMich Prescreen results are coming out–just got word and are scheduled for Jan 11. Submitted ON the early deadline date. Still haven’t heard from Texas State.

@minicp I’m not a big fan of driving (or flying!) so we tried to book the schools furthest away for NY unifieds which is close to us.
Our longest audition drive will probably be 5 hours.

@MTJourney19 Congrats!

@minicp @NYart15 I enjoy driving, but need to balance the ‘days off school’ with the drive time, so that generally puts us at an approx 8-9 hour drive time (each way) for a weekend trip. We’re in CT, and I’ve driven to Florida several times, but not for a weekend! We were going to drive to Chicago Unifieds but found flights for both of us for under $300 total, so it was easy to justify flying instead of the 24 hours driving in unknown (probably yucky) weather, plus family/friends in/near chicago that can probably get us to/from the airport, so no need for a car. We were going to fly to Florida to audition for his Florida schools, but they’re both going to be at MARCAS this weekend, so that saves us a trip to Florida (much to S’s chagrin!). All in all, S is going to end up doing about 4-5 on campus auditions which are from 2-9 hours drive time, and the remaining at unifieds or other regional auditions.

Could anyone give a rundown on what MARCAS is? And how you can participate?

@NYart15 @lithpool I don’t mind driving at all, but, other than the Florida schools which we are definitely driving to, most of the other schools would be about 15 hours each way so that’s a lot of driving over a short period of time. Granted, the only one she’s heard back from so far is Shenandoah and that audition is in February, so depending on how her other pre-screens go (still waiting on Elon, Pace, BOCO and CMU), this may be a non-issue. She has her first audition this Saturday locally at UM.

On another note, if anyone is interested in and submitted pre-screens for FSU prior to today, we were informed that they are starting to look at pre-screens and should have an answer for those who submitted by November 7th and thereafter it will be on a rolling basis with an expected 2 week turn-around time.

@FlaMTmom my D submitted Otterbein on October 14 and heard back yesterday.

We’re from California and going to NY Unifieds. Now I’m so paranoid about the weather! What recourse is there for flight delays, cancellations, etc? I think we timed it right - we get there Friday and my D doesn’t have any auditions until Sat through Monday - but if a student misses an audition for weather, will a school reschedule? We’re also doing LA Unifieds.

Does anyone know how long it takes Elon to respond to prescreens for regular decision?

Has anyone heard back from Univ of Arizona or Ball State regarding audition times for Chicago Unifieds? I’m trying to come up with her schedule, but the only one we’ve gotten a specific time for is CCM.

@CaliMTdreams - in the past, some schools have allowed students who missed an audition due to weather or illness to submit a video audition. If they happen to have open slots on another date, they might offer those to you as well. But as with all things MT, each school would handle this request individually. There have been times where schools have been unable to reach an audition location due to weather. And in that case, I do believe they allowed video auditions to be submitted. Unfortunately, the weather is out of everyone’s control.
