I hadn’t looked at this forum since Thanksgiving, but congrats to all of those you have been getting good news regarding pre-screens, acceptances, etc. Son was accepted into the BFA program at Ohio Northern and also got a decent academic scholarship to boot, so that was good news. He has his on campus audition at NKU this weekend and Xavier audition scheduled for January. Still haven’t received a university acceptance notice from Ohio U (it’s been 16 weeks since they received it and yes, I’ve already contacted them twice). We were planning to do an on campus audition there, but have to wait until he’s accepted to even schedule so I’m not sure what the delay is. Hopefully by mid-February we’ll have everything on the table to make a decision. In the meantime . . . breathe!
@Mark80 Congratulations to you and your S! And good luck at at your upcoming auditions! Yes, breath :)>-
Hampton Inn was great. They have a free shuttle which will transport to/from airport and campus!
Re: scheduling at Unifieds – I would say in most cases, scheduling one morning and one afternoon audition each day should be more than doable. And doing it this way, on many days, you will most likely have time to add some walk ins as well as even those schools who ask for a 4 hr block typically don’t need you for nearly that long when all is said and done, depending on where you fall in the order of the day. For any school requesting an entire day (there were none of those the year we attended Chicago - CMU and Michigan asked for 4 hours and they were the longest blocks requested), I would try to do them on the weekend before if possible so you have as much time available for other auditions during the week.
oh man, my D just got her email from Ithaca- it was a no How does everyone feel about the Hartt school and LIU Post, good programs?
@MTMomma13 my D did pre-college programs at OKCU, Broadway Artist Alliance and Junior Theater Festival/iTheatrics, Disney and other master classes. All good experiences to see ones level of talent outside of one’s school or community theater shows. The Broadway Collective is also terrific. It was helpful to test and broaden her skill levels among a more national pool prior to college auditions. Helped tremendously to let her know how to navigate the college audition process when the time came. Also on ur question about HARTT it’s a wonderful program. Visit LIU… facilities were not very impressive in person. But nice it’s close to NYC if that’s a positive for your child.
Sorry @MTMomma13 - the "no"s are inevitable but some are very, very tough to handle. This is a hard process on everyone.
I am sorry about the no on the Ithaca prescreen @MTMama13. My D has had almost all of her friends not pass unless they are super strong dancers. Also, I have heard excellent things about the HARTT School. My D is applying there.
We only have experience with Hartt’s summer program but the experience was great, as were the facilities. My D is auditioning there 12/8.
We have also heard great things about Hartt and my S is auditioning there. I’m sorry about Ithaca. The no’s are so hard to take.
Aside from Penn State, S finally has all of his prescreen results and everything is scheduled. We had to ask a couple schools to move times at Unifieds but for the most part, the morning/afternoon sessions worked out to get in 2 per day. The tricky thing will be being on time to auditions that are not at Pearl Studios or the Palmer House - hopefully there won’t be a blizzard and it will be easy enough to get around the cities!
@Mark80, my son will also be at NKU this weekend to audition. He auditioned at Ohio University back in October but have not heard anything from anyone there. Not sure where you guys live but it is supposed to be 70 degrees and super rainy on Saturday!
@speezagmom @MToverload
For our CCM day she is scheduled to do the dance bit at 8, and audition slot is 12:20. Do these things run on time? I called to ask for an earlier slot but completely booked.
I wonder if BoCo would let her do the dance call on a different day than the audition. I will call them. Boco dance call is at 2pm afternoon, could she get to that from her 1220 slot??
By the way, I am enjoying everybody’s screen names.
Hi @MTMomma13! Very sorry about your D’s no from Ithaca. My D got pre-screen no’s from Carnegie Mellon and Syracuse, but also got yes’s from Pace, Shenandoah, and several others. Since your D attended Pace’s and BW’s summer programs, I have no doubt that she’ll be getting lots of yes’s!
I think my D’s summer experiences contributed quite a bit to her decision to pursue MT in college, improved her confidence and motivation to work towards that goal, and helped her get her acceptance to OCU MT today! She was in her first musical at age 9, but didn’t decide to pursue it as a career until she attended her first pre-college summer program after her freshman year. The roughly 20 kids were in a group text that was active daily for the following year. She attends a small high school that focuses on athletics, so she really found herself among all the other MT kids that week. The experience changed her life, and she was motivated to start working hard for a future in MT.
The following summer she attended OCU’s 3-week MT program, and she fell in love with everything about OCU! She developed more great friendships, and was a lead in their full-length show, so she was busy every free minute of the day learning her lines. Dr. H (Herendeen) directed the show (Urinetown) and worked everyday with kids, and all the other faculty was from their college programs. The talent and instruction quality was top notch! They had dance, music theory, and acting classes every weekday morning, with voice, masterclasses, and rehearsals each afternoon. There were Saturday morning special subject classes, Saturday night cabarets, and Sunday afternoon show rehearsals. They were BUSY, and LOVED every minute of it! After this AWESOME experience, she knew she could handle a rigorous MT program, so it was a great confidence boost.
This past summer she attended CCM’s 2-week MT program, followed by OCU’s 3-week program. She again made great friendships and grew more from the superb instruction. Tom Morin and Caroline Selia from Polish Your Passion NYC give a college search class during each OCU summer session. My D is using them as her audition coaches, and they have been incredible! They are smart, friendly, and oh so talented! They helped her be able to show her best during her auditions.
I have to believe that after spending 6 weeks with my D, the faculty at OCU already knew what she could do, and what to expect from her during her audition. There are so many more unknowns with the others auditioning. Her audition went very well, and that was also probably due to feeling comfortable in the OCU environment.
I would definitely recommend summer programs for those thinking about pursuing MT in college. My D is on Cloud 9 tonight after being accepted to OCU, and those summer programs played a big role in that!
Best of luck to you and your D! It’s a crazy ride, but so much fun!
wow congrats @StageDad311
Thank you @NYYFanNowMTdad - it’s been a really good day! The highs are really high, but the lows are really low too! These kids (and the parents who love them) work so hard for their dream, so it’s a real roller coaster of emotions. Did I read that your D is a junior this year? You’re going to be well prepared for all the fun next year through CC. Thanks again!
@CanaDad I believe the CCM Dance call runs promptly to end at 9:30am. Auditions run very tight. Be there 20 minutes before your audition and expect it to go no later than 30 minutes past your scheduled appointment. The outside monitor can keep you posted on how times are going too.
We were able to schedule 2-3 auditions per day (not all had dance calls) and added one walk in per day. Some schools only schedule walks ins for that day, while others schedule all days starting the first day, so talk to the door monitors on the first day early in the morning and find out. Have resumes and schedule in hand to respond if they say yes to walk ins. Try to do a walk in during the morning before your scheduled appointments. It’s a great warm up and you may just find your home at a walk in.
Since we are on west coast, we tried to not schedule any auditions before 10am, even later were better.
Congratulations @StageDad311 !!! I am so happy for you and your D - it’s wonderful for her to be accepted this early into a program she knows and loves. I am sure you’re ALL on Cloud 9!!!
Thank you @CaMom13 - Yes, family and friends are all having a party on Cloud 9 tonight!!!
I just read your “open and heartfelt letter to parents of MT applicants,” and it’s right on! Thank you for paying it forward this year! I hope your kiddo is having a great freshman year! Although it’s a lot of work, I’m definitely going to miss the closeness that comes with sharing lots of discussions, long car rides, hotel rooms, hugs, smiles, and laughter. I remember the last college visit with my older D and how bitter-sweet it was. The hardest single moment of my life thus far was driving off after dropping my older D off at college. We want them to fly high, but the transition is hard.
Thanks again!
@StageDad311 Thank you so much! That story is so heartwarming, I’m so happy for you and your D! It really is all about trusting the process- so bittersweet!
@Mark80 mid February! Most don’t have all their options on the table until April - and that’s if they aren’t wait-listed. Some get offers in June!
