The Class of 2023- sharing, venting, discussing! - MT

Syracuse does not do walk-ins. I would just call the department. I would think they would find a way to accommodate.

@Mom2jnes we are going to be cancelling our spot it is for feb 2 on campus. My S is putting the letter together now so in the next few days. Keep you posted if that helps.

I don’t think a school should pass someone on a prescreen but not have any audition spots available.

Texas State and Penn State both required pre-screens, but they did have (possibly limited) walk ins at Unifieds. A lot of people were annoyed with that situation. I guess it depends on how you think you “perform” better.

@loribelle we are hoping for this approach for my D. A series of challenges led to less than optimal prescreen videos and the results have reflected that - but she’s done very well at her live auditions. If given the opportunity, I’m confident she’ll do much better in person.

@afterp89 The same for my daughter, but we didn’t know that until we did the prescreens. Good recording sound and good vocal health at the time of pre-screens are a must, but we ended up with less than optimal circumstances. Plus, trying to do a whole bunch of pre-screens by requirement in one day that is available and you have a location (finally) is just plain exhausting. If mom is the camera operator (by default), it ends up being a tense day to “get it done” and by deadline.

But, it is risky to assume that pre-screen schools will have walk ins each year, unless they have guaranteed it (such as combines in NYC).

@lovetoact most of the schools with walkins have pre-screens.

I know it’s been said that one shouldn’t do a walk-in if they didn’t pass the prescreen, however, if you’re auditioning for a bunch of schools at once (ie combines), and the school whose prescreen you didn’t pass happens to be there…I’m curious if there’s ever been a turnaround on the prescreen result after a live audition. Does anyone know if this has happened? I’m not hoping or anticipating this to happen, I’m just truly curious…

@mtdreamz I haven’t seen evidence that ‘most of the schools with walkins have pre-screens.’

Where does that data come from?

At NY Unifieds, I can’t even see that most of the schools had prescreens at all, even for scheduled auditions.

@MTMom624 Thank you so much!! I have a message into Syracuse re: Unifieds, but will also ask about your on-campus spot. Not sure if their application asks for audition location preference, but yes, frustrated that no spots open at unifieds!?!

@k_wheel2019 I completely agree with your opinion on the Emerson prescreen. How could you judge talent off of a one-minute singing video?

@MTdreamz In my experience, it’s just the opposite: The pre-screen schools typically don’t have walk ins available. I knew only a handful of exceptions to this, and they were usually very limited number of spots. This was from Chicago Unifieds last year.

I think in general, pre-screen schools do not plan to offer walk-ins. However, in recent years, significant weather events have caused all sorts of disruption with scheduled auditions whether it is the student who is not able to make their scheduled time or the school. So if a pre-screen school finds themselves in an audition location with time slots available due to something like that, I think they will make them available, even though typically they would not plan to do so.

I just received an auto email, I am sure, related to this University starting their winter break starting tomorrow at 5:00 up to January 2nd. For those of you in the know, does everything just stop and students aren’t notified, or do staff take home the prescreens and continue to view them and notifying students of pass or fail. Thanks in advance.

@BWmama Penn State, FSU and Elon last year gave a “hear by” date early to mid-January when they would release pre-screen results if you were in the second wave of submissions (submit after October deadline). I remember we submitted the first week after the deadline but didn’t hear until that date, which led me to believe they shut down activities over their breaks. Penn State was for Unifieds so it was tight scheduling. FSU and Elon was for on campus auditions so a little bit later on the calendar and had more time to book flights accordingly.

@loribelle I guess I meant more that I didnt think that is a determining factor. My d did 2 walkins and I know one otterbein had a prescreen. The other I didn’t know bu may not have. Ithaca had walk-ins. Most of my d’s had prescreens so assumed that isn’t a factor in walkins but could be wrong because we didn’t have time to do many.

My D got her second artistic acceptance today, although not MT (not offered), but rather an Theatre Arts: Acting BFA from Adelphi University. It also said they are recommending her for an artistic scholarship as well (not sure the amount yet). She would be able to minor in vocal performance and take dance classes. If they had a MT BFA it might top her list - she loves the campus, the professors, the fellow students and the facilities. Hopefully she’ll still find her perfect fit, but if not, I know she’d be happy there.

Anyone else hear from UCLA today?

Got an email today that Hartt audition slots are filled for NYC Unifieds- thats so annoying!!!

@afterp89. Congrats!!!
