Texas State allowed a few walk-ins last year (not sure how it came about but D was waiting her turn and they took a student who had arranged a walk-in earlier in the day). Again, I wouldn’t count on it but it NEVER hurts to ask.
@BWmama - an Acting pass is a win at CMU. The MTs and As are a very homogeneous group, and share all classes with the exception of dance and voice lab. To accommodate the actors who are also singers/dancers, Carnegie offers them voice lessons (self-pay, and most do take advantage of those) and dance (based on ballet audition once at the school). The BFA Actors can graduate very MT-ready if they take advantage of those offerings. Hope that helps! Feel free to post or PM with any additional CMU questions.
And congrats to your D!
congrats @afterp89! Nice news just before the holidays
@MTMomma13 How long did it take Hartt to let you know that? We submitted all the stuff online a few weeks ago and haven’t heard back about Chicago.
@MTMomma13 I actually just left a voicemail with Hartt. My daughter submitted 2 weeks ago and has not heard a peep about when and where she’ll be able to audition.
@KAT67 my D got her UCLA audition invitation yesterday for Acting. She’s excited!
@SoCalPops YAY!!! My D got an invitation for Musical Theatre! Congrats to our kids. Looks like very few kids get to audition. I was surprised as I heard it would be 1,000 kids, but only a little over 100 get to audition.
@KAT67 Wow, those odds are narrow. Congratulations! I would say that is a very big achievement
@KAT67 and @Notmath1 - the numbers are hard to figure out. I have always heard from them that around 1000 kids audition (or maybe its apply) for the majors at UCLA department of Theatre, Film and Television (UCLA TFT). I think that 1000 number is for ALL majors within TFT. So that includes MT, Acting, Playwriting, and some others (that I can’t recall). When my D showed me the audition time selection info in acceptd last night, there looked to be around 250 or so audition slots for Acting. Add to that your D seeing 100 for MT… and then they do onsite interviews and portfolio reviews for playwrites and others… So I don’t believe that 1000 number is for 100 audition slots. BUT, it is still very competitive and very selective. I would guess around 600-800 are applying for Acting and MT with the net of 350 getting to audition live. Then looks like they go for a yield of 10-12 MT class and 20ish Acting Class. Probably accept 18-20 MTs, and 30-40 Actors to get that yield. Just an educated guess on these numbers based on what I’ve gleaned from researching UCLA and other schools over the past few months.
@BWmama My S emailed Penn State regarding status of prescreen and received an automatic email stating the contact was out of the office and prescreen decisions would be sent on January 7, 2019.
@Mom2jnes Gosh, what will we do for three weeks without being on the edge of our seats each and every day! I guess I will use the time to relax and try to get more organized. Yeah, right, not in this crazy household.
But my D received a rejection from Shenandoah yesterday, but then almost immediately received a Pass from Rider.
She called two of her friends at Shenandoah to give them the bad news that she wouldn’t be joining them, and one of them said the school is “rebranding” from being known as a rock musical school, although she didn’t say to what, and then another friend, who’s a freshman, said she is so unhappy there and will be transferring somewhere else.
My DS got an artistic acceptance to Florida Southern for BFA MT! So now we have one BA and one BFA!! We are anxiously awaiting Emerson Early Action which should come out this weekend.
I am curious to the answer from the earlier question of auditioning at Combines if a school gave you a no to your pre-screen, if there ever has been a change of heart. I wondered about that too.
@NYKaren Congrats!! It’s AWESOME to know they have a choice!!
@NYKaren
We were told that you can attend combines if you received any prescreen rejections as all 7 schools will be in the room at the same time. No idea if a prescreen rejection could turn into a combines acceptance.
Thank you, @lithpool ! He’s very excited. We have a quite a few more auditions lined up for after the holidays but I think it depends on how the Early Actions go to see if he commits or not and withdraws from the rest. He did 5 auditions in the fall. He was supposed to do 6 but withdrew from Hartt last weekend after he made Florida Southern. He did not make Baldwin Wallace and was accepted to Fairleigh Dickinson BA MT. So, we are now waiting on Emerson and Nazareth BFAs for Early Action.
@NYart15 , thank you! I was curious. It would be interesting to hear if there are any stories like that.
I would think that auditioning at a school that declined you on prescreen, would still be worthwhile IF, they take walkins and IF you have the time in your schedule. From what I have learned, many times with pre-screens, its only one or two members a department who are viewing the prescreens. They divide the reviewing workload up among multiple staff members. So one person might decline you, and then different ones might see you live. Plus, if you are very talented and skilled, often a prescreen decline is based on look or type, and not skill. So go show what you got if that is a school you really want to audition for. It can’t hurt, unless it negatively impacts your time and schedule for other auditions at the Unifieds.
Right?? Except in the back of my mind I’ll keep hoping & making S check his email just in case?!
Sorry to your D about Shenandoah. Funny, my S did not apply there because they were considered more of a rock music school.

My D just received notification that she has been accepted into her first BFA MT program at EMERSON!
