This whole process is so insane at times. To piggyback off some previous posts, my daughter passed 10 out of 11 of her prescreens and the one who rejected her is the program that I would consider the least-selective and prestigious of them all (don’t want to step on any toes, so no names here)… but she passed Penn, Michigan, Ithaca, Pace and many other top programs only to get a rejection from a school that she thought was not even going to be a hurdle. It really is strange how subjective art and talent is!
@CanaDad The only callbacks that I know of after Unifieds are on campus. Univ of Oklahoma has on campus for their final ~60 people and I think Texas State sometimes requests them after their combines and walk ins.
Has anyone heard from USC about pre-screens?
I should add that if you do walk in’s at Unifieds and they like you, sometimes you are “called back” for one of their dance calls for a couple schools. Not everyone is always asked.
IU audition was a great experience. I fell in love with the campus and have decided to go there even tho I was not accepted into the MT program. it’s extremely competive like any other school so I hope to transfer into the program later on and explore what jacobs SoM has to offer :))
@Zukandsowash: First great for you son he will do FINE.
Its important to remember the schools are creating a “stable” of performers (much like talent agencies do). If they already have a (example here) tall skinny all American blonde boy who is funny and that is what your DS is…then no matter what he does at auditions he will not be accepted. They already have that type. When casting the school shows they need to fill all the traditional roles (character boy, girl, Ingenue, Leading Man etc). When a senior graduates they are looking to fill that spot with the incoming freshman. Think College football team. My DC was already heavily “recruited” at a summer program b/c the Director there knew that he was looking for that type in the next couple years.
My DC and friends constantly look at who is in grade above them and know ‘oh thats not good for me’ if so- and- so gets in there. They know if UMIch already has a type like them who is a Sophomore/Junior there is a huge chance they will not be accepted.
For future reference this is the exact same issue with trying to get an agent. If a certain agency signs someone the same type as your child, the chances for them are weaker of getting signed with them. Professional actors constantly check out Agencies “stables” of actors on IMDB to see if their “type” is represented/signed already and tailor their submissions accordingly.
The college process is a microcosm of the NY/B’way scene. This is why Director’s stress to you to “KNOW YOUR TYPE”. The better you know how you are being seen the better you can strategize and not waste time.
Some schools prefer good looking dancer boys, some prefer Tall Straight Leading Man (uh hem) etc. So basically once talent is established in the first 20 seconds it becomes “do we need this type at school”.
@mamaboyz this is very helpful information! Thank you. This is why we shouldn’t get “down” when a rejection happens! Thanks for sharing your insights to me as a parent who is trying to understand the whole process!
Is anyone else waiting to hear from Elon? S auditioned in November. All of his friends heard yesterday but he’s still waiting. Thanks.
@ROW78LBB83 - They heard Yeses? NO’s? Maybe’s? Combination of any news? We auditioned in Nov. and haven’t heard any news.
@3Blessings They heard no and deferred. Haven’t heard of anyone getting a yes yet. Good luck!
@MToverload and @collegeboundSam, congratulations!! My DS was accepted to Nazareth as well! We did the Nov. 16th auditions.
CollegeboundSam, did I meet you over the summer at Naz? Did you do a tour day that consisted of 3 boys? My son is Tyler.
@penny1234 , we received a no from BW for the conservatory BFA, but when we got the no letter, it said we were academically accepted to the school and there was a form in there to send back to admissions regarding choosing another major. Hope this helps!
My S and most of his friends go the “no” message from Elon yesterday. He knows one person who was accepted and it’s my understanding that the acceptance telephone calls were made on Monday.
@NYKaren Congratulations! think I remember that your son really liked Nazareth on the tour, yes? Or maybe that was someone else - so many screen names to try to keep straight. My D really liked what she saw/experienced while there a few weeks ago and feels that she could be happy there.
@MToverload, yes he really did love it and feels at home there. But, I don’t think you met us on your tour. We were there in late August and our tour was only guys, which I found funny! It is definitely a leading contender for us. I would say that it will come down to Nazareth and Florida Southern, which he got a yes from earlier this month. We have a bunch more auditions scheduled after the holidays, so we’ll see.
@nykaren Right…D’s only visit was the day of the audition. I just remember a discussion on the boards here about someone (maybe you?) describing how impressed their son was with the program. Anyway, congrats again!
Oh yes! That could have been me! Your right, all the screen names get confusing. Glad to hear your D got in and is considering Naz. Best of luck to her in her remaining auditions.
We heard from Miami today. My daughter passed the prescreen.
We are also waiting on USC MT. I saw they sent Acting callbacks already this week.
@katzenbogen thanks for the update…was getting nervous…this process is so brutal!
