The Class of 2024 - Audition Day Reviews

Regarding Ithaca’s movement call…does this apply to MT auditions as well? I assumed the kids could wear their outfits (in this case a jumpsuit) for the whole audition.

Yes movement is for MTs. There is no dance call as they did it on their prescreen

Does anyone know what the MT audition requirements are for Coastal Carolina at Unifieds?

@CBSQandA Many schools have specific dance attire. You should check with each school but I would suggest dance wear not their audition outfit. They auditors need to see the lines of the body.

My DD is going to the audition for MSM in Chicago next month. Would be interested in hearing what it’s like as well.

For any future Combine auditioners, the line started at 5am. My D was 5th in line. I spoke with someone who arrived at 7:45 and she was put on the waitlist. I would arrive by 6am to guarantee a spot.

I just put a thorough summary in the venting thread as well on combines

There were several people in line holding spaces for other adults (not their own children), and others just outright cut in front when the line was asked to move so as not to block storefronts, so someone who might have been 30th in line at 6:30 could have ended up being 50th in line by the time they got to the desk. Seems like a fair measure to take might be to issue numbers to folks in line early enough to reward those who are actually there waiting, and honor those numbers through to sign-up. At a “real open call,” someone usually starts an “unofficial” non-equity list and professional actors waiting for their auditions are civil enough to honor that.

@Dance3Looks3 that totally sucks- that kinda happened to us when we went upstairs in the elevator as we initially went to the wrong floor, but I simply walked back to “my place” in line & said to the people who got in line before me, as you know I was here first w a smile, & took back " my spot in line"…its BS for people to do what they did to you.

It was frustrating for sure, but thankfully, everyone who was there enduring the cold from before dawn seemed to get a spot. In the end, our memory of Combines is of a HUGE undertaking that the truly lovely folks from Shenandoah run seemingly without compensation – take away the rude line jumpers and the day was a total win with friendly, organized auditions and a whole lot of positive energy around. We’re thankful for the opportunity and for the amount of work that obviously went into planning and executing it.

NYC Auditions so far:

Boston Conservatory:
The people are SO friendly and fun. The dance call included ballet and jazz and the jazz portion was VERY challenging if you’re not a true dancer. Overall, the dance call felt more like a master class and my daughter said she actually learned a lot.

Ball State:
D did a walk-in. Friendly, fun dance call, uptempo with a little bit of tap incorporated. Music theory test before the audition. No fee to audition.

University of Utah:
Also a walk-in. Check-in people fun and friendly but D said the two women auditioning were “boring.” Didn’t feel like they wanted to get to know her. They asked her to pick one of the songs from her binder and she chose the other. 30.00 audition fee. No dance call but they did ask her if she considered herself a mover or a dancer.

Will review University of Miami and LIU-Post tomorrow!

walk in a missouri state w Bob Westenberg & Lisa Brescia was per my D " very warm, fun and exceeded all expectations" . They are based at Ripley down the hall on 17th floor from CMU

On Campus at MaryMount…Checkin was scheduled for 10am, but they started at 930. After students handed in headshot and resume they were given schedule with their group (which was alpha order).

Dance calls were 1030, 11 and 1130. S said choreographer was fun, and it was more of a movement call, which he was freatful for!

Once dance call was done, students and parents were free to go until Q&A started at 1pm…that lasted about an hour then each group went to their acting or MT auditions. S says his group worked on songs until about 530…it was a classroom setting so each student sang, was given some direction then sang again. They then each did their monologues and they day was over at 6pm.

Very positive and enjoyable!

I love hearing about everyone’s experiences and it confirms what I felt two years ago - the prescreens and audition prep were awful but the auditions were mostly fun and interesting - definitely my favorite part of the process! BAL to everyone auditioning tomorrow!!!

AMDA on campus - my S attended an audition+ so after the 830 checkin, there was a workshop with one of the professors. He took several volunteers from both Acting and MT and gave them direction/feedback then had them redo their piece several times. It was nice to get a feel for how the classroom works. Parents stayed to watch the workshop, then at the end of the hour the groups were broken up and the parents were taken to a studio for Q&A with admissions. As students finished their auditions parents left. Feedback was given during the audition. Each audition was followed by an interview…a real interview with tough questions about programs and goals, etc. My S was one of the last ones and we were finished by 12:10. Decisions are rolling in about 1-3 weeks.

Fordham on campus was very straight forward. My S had a 3:30 audition but we went right over from AMDA to catch the Q&A at 1 which was done with a panel of students and directors from all tracks, then admissions spoke. They were offering tours throughout the day so we were also able to do that prior to the audition. About a half hour before the audition the student ambassador brought the next few students to the room where they were given instructions on what to expect. The audition itself lasted about six minutes. No feedback, or discussion, just a thank you. Decisions out between Feb and April.

Sunday NYC Unified Auditions:

University of Miami: My daughter liked this dance call the best (maybe because she thought it was the easiest). Auditioners were interested and spent time talking to her, answering and asking questions, etc. She was impressed that they talked about wanting to create great performers and kind people.

University of Long Island Post: She was surprised she liked this one as much as she did. She was not asked to the dance call but was instead asked to do an “interview” which was really an information session with the department head. She described him as very direct and honest which she likes. He said this MT program has a strong emphasis on acting.

After six auditions, we are ready to go home, regroup and prepare for the LA Unifieds. Overall, we felt it was a very positive weekend and we are glad we came across the country for it. Looking forward to the rest of her auditions being much closer to home!

@NeensMom Was it Dave Hugo she spoke to at LIU? If so, he is an amazing teacher and very kind. Has worked on Broadway and is the real deal. We know him from workshops. Have not visited campus but I have no doubt there is great acting training there. Someone else would have to speak about other components because I am not familiar.

@GeddyMcNutty it was David Hugo! She was really impressed with him. Definately moved LIU up on her list!

@theatrekidmom–thanks for the info about Marymount. When you say that check-in was scheduled for 10 but they started at 9:30, do you mean that the audition portion of the day got started earlier than planned or just that those who arrived before 10 could check in earlier? D has her Marymount audition in a couple of weeks on-campus, so we’re interested to learn how the day went. I was hoping it wouldn’t really go til 6pm! (We have theatre tickets for that evening!)

We’ve already visited campus and done a general info session–was the Q&A specific to the BA Theatre/MT program? I’m wondering how much time we actually need to be there–it sounds like we may be able to come and go & only be there when needed? Let me know if you have more detailed info–or PM me. Thanks!

@NeensMom I’ve heard music theory tests mentioned before. what exactly does that consist of? is that a paper & pencil type of thing, or a Q&A session??
