The Class of 2024 - Audition Day Reviews

@toystorymom Our intinerary for MMC went through 6pm and I’m pretty sure we were there until 5:30 and some had already left a bit earlier.

@tygerpig for Ball State it was a paper & pencil exam. Two pages.

@NeensMom Thanks for your feedback on the auditions. Hearing about what D or S DOES in an audition is way more important (to me) than how nice and/or informative the auditors are. I expect most college auditors are extremely nice, supportive and give positive feedback (if they give any at all) because we are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing us. They want to represent a quality product (program/university). Let’s not forget, we will be paying them someday for a service.

Don’t be fooled, get too enamored with how nice they are, or get enticed by their pretty campus and facilities. Side note…My daughter visited TCU and loved the campus and was amazed by all the pretty flowers, landscaping, and buildings. She was bought in! Well, those flowers cost $65k a year!

Like you, I have read many posts the past few years about the personal attention, the positive feedback, the great facilities and tour, and the warm smiles that ultimately resulted in a rejection letter, bewilderment, and the statement, “They loved us! They were so nice. I thought we were going to get an offer.” Be very pragmatic while going through this process. It may possibly save you and, more importantly, your extremely talented S/D from having a broken heart. They will land in a program that is perfect for them! Good luck in the coming weeks. BAL!

They aren’t all nice! My daughter had one audition that was definitely more about rigor than kindness. Seems it was also an accurate representation of how they do business in the program, which I appreciate very much.

@Dance3Looks3 Great, I think, to hear. That’s the real world for better or for worse. Not all unicorns and rainbows.

Regarding Marymount audition - the actual audition day didn’t start earlier; but they started letting the kids check in around 9:30 or so vs 10 am. The info session was specific to MT and Acting, although in the Q&A some people asked more general questions. My D was in the first dance call (10:30) and she got done around 11, so we had a nice break from 11-1 when the info session started, went out and had lunch etc. Her group finished the voice and acting auditions around 6:05. The day was very organized and well run; also they had a table with coffee/tea/juice/water and fresh fruit, granola bars and so on, which was very nice.

My D auditioned at Coastal Carolina this past weekend. It was a full day - lots of personal time with the faculty and current students who mingled throughout the day and ate lunch with the students and families. They said they prescreened 600 videos, invited 200 to audition and are shooting for 10-12 to accept. Another very small percent that get in. They did some introductions and had a lot of faculty there, then the students moved to a holding room and did their auditions. Parents were free to go. My D sang both her songs and did her monologue - there were 10 faculty present for the auditions. Then they moved to lunch and a Q & A and campus tour. The afternoon was three , one hour workshops working with the faculty - one acting, one singing and one dance. The dance served as their dance audition. My D said everyone sang one song again in the vocal workshop and they gave feedback and provided suggestions - also did some warm ups with them . The acting one they did their monologue and got feedback. The day ended with another Q & A and then we were on our way. It was a 9 - 4 pm day and they said they will notify in March all at one time.

Hi I wanted to know if anyone has an UCLA MT audition experiences they can share? This will be my first big audition and I don’t really know what to expect (especially the dance call!)

At Baldwin-Wallace it was pen and paper, two sides of one sheet. S said it was fairly rudimentary stuff: note recognition, time signatures, etc.

Texas State Audition Day Review:

Great facilities. Warm staff. Well organized. Beautiful campus.

They provided plenty of food and drinks for everyone throughout the day. After touring the campus, there was an hour-long presentation by Kaitlin, her staff, and students how the MT program is run. After kids left for dance call, there were 2 parents of current students that did Q&A for 30 minutes.

Kids were brought back in groups for dance call. Didn’t have much time to warm up/stretch. Kids were asked about their dance experience. Kids instructed on choreography. They performed. More experienced kids were asked to perform more advanced techniques. Done.

Monologue/Singing audition times were announced in advance. Kids had plenty of time to change clothes, prep, and eat. Kids were brought in the room individually. Faculty knew her monologues, so they asked her to only do one and they picked which one to perform. She sang all three songs. They ended with some questions. Questions were very standard–why our school, what will you bring to us?

In the evening, they had a master’s class for 90 minutes. 3-4 boys and 3-4 girls performed. All workshopped songs. It was incredible to see the improvement and transformation the kids made after 10 minutes of coaching. The talent and coaching was all A+.

Bottom line–this program is incredibly strong; the faculty are humble, funny, and professional; and the students and faculty are a very tight-knit family. We will be fortunate to get an offer.

Does anyone have an Illinois Wesleyan review? Also, if your child went to Baldwin Wallace on campus, did they bring in 3 songs to the room or is that outdated info?

Thanks!

For Baldwin Wallace you bring three and they choose two from those.

Webster at NYC - no dance call. Audition was about 15 minutes. They took the time to chat about their program and give the student time to ask questions. Very supportive and friendly. Typical 2 songs and 1 monologue.

@CBSQandA
We auditioned and it was a wonderful experience! The staff and students were warm and excepting ( though the weather was not!) We began in a parent/student holding room with a lovely spread or rather continental breakfast! Then there was a Program review and introduction to faculty and staff. This was followed by a review of what the days process would look like. I believe the dance call was first. My daughter absolutely loved the dance teacher and the current students that were assisting were wonderful. She said the call was more of an instructional class rather than a learn this choreography and just do it…like they were really trying to assess its students potential. Both Acting and MT was there that day and they were pulling students in for auditions after the dance call. They very generously gave all of the MT students a time slot prior to their vocal audition in which to warm up in a private room, which I thought was outstanding. The vocal accompanist was great and the auditioners were kind and truly engaged. They also gave everyone a voucher to go and have lunch in the cafeteria to sample the food and sit around with current students. We wound up sitting there for hours with a bunch of students it was a fantastic experience! The students were just delightful and answered any question we had and shared so much of their own experiences at the school, why they select the school, what they do for fun…on and on. I could so have seen my daughter fitting in with this group of students for sure. They also gave a tour of the campus which is rather small, but it was very informative and enjoyable. The dorms were some of the nicest we have seen! All the way around a fantastic experience! My daughter Fell in love with the program! It was her first audition, we have done 11 since and it remains a stand out experience and a strong contender for sure!!
Hope you enjoy it as well as we did!! BAL!

Anyone with a Syracuse audition day review?

Would also love a CCM audition day review it’s so nice just to have a vibe of what to expect!

Is anyone else doing an “on-campus” at Roosevelt this Saturday before Unifieds starts? Do you know if it’s like other on-campus experiences with info sessions and tours all day, etc? Or is it a shorter experience that is more like the rest of Unifieds?

@MTquest24 I posted a review of Syracuse on the BFA Acting Audition Experiences board- they had acting and MT students together and called them separately to various auditions for dance/song/monologue so much of my experience will be relevant. If you have other specific questions I’ll do my best to answer.

My D will be auditioning on Saturday at Roosevelt. From what I gather, the audition is a regular audition and will last around 15 minutes. She’s doing the dance call on Sunday.

The email they sent said: We will be offering campus tours 11am and 2pm. No advanced registration is needed, and tours will leave and return at the same 218 S. Wabash location. Tours are about an hour. The 2pm tour will return in plenty of time for the 3:30pm dance call for those who are scheduled to attend.

We will also be holding an Theatre Conservatory information session at 1pm with Theatre faculty and admissions staff, also at 218 S. Wabash. There is no advanced registration needed for this. All are welcome!

Hope this is helpful!

My D will be auditioning for Ithaca at Chicago Unifieds. She received an email that states, “For the warm-ups, please wear something that you are comfortable moving in. This may or may not be the same clothing you wear for your audition. You will have time to change before your audition.” She knows what to wear for a usual dance call but is looking for direction in what to wear to Ithaca’s movement/warm-up – does this mean athletic wear (leggings and a fitted top) or just pants and casual top? Thanks in advance.
