The classic conundrum

I’m sure that this is a classic dilemma, and I’m one of a horde with a similar situation.

Anyway, I simply am not sure what level or quality of university I’m cut out for.

I’m looking at going in as a poli. sci. major (politics has always been an interesting subject for me).

I’ve got a 2150 SAT (690 on Math, 730 each on the other two), a 750 on the U.S. History SAT Subject test. Furthermore, I’ve spent all 4 years of my high school career in JSA, serving last year in State Leadership (Senate) and this year in Regional Leadership (Regional Cabinet). I’ve also spent about 2 and a half years on the Board of Directors of ASFAR, an activist nonprofit organization (based in Illinois, though I live in California.) I’ve also spent 2 non-consecutive years in my school’s improv comedy group, Comedy Sportz (and no, that is NOT a typo).

That’s the good news.

The bad news? My transcript is in the crapper. My GPA, weighted, was 3.01 at the start of this year. I’ve improved it by acing AP Gov, but that’s also the first AP I’ve been allowed in (I have an IEP due to my Asperger’s). Before you ask, that’s not putting me in the top tier of students at my school. This school has a thriving IB program, and many strong GPAs can be found, if one looks. Worse yet, I actually had to drop the 2nd half of my math course last year, and I’m repeating the whole course next semester.

To an extent, I’m what the applications officers think I am. I’m smart, but I’ve had a long-standing aversion to busywork. In any event, I’m now faced with a dilemma, in that I’ve got the credentials, in large part, to get into most poli. sci. programs. I simply have one massive anchor dragging me down. What I’m wondering is, how far down? What is or isn’t realistic for me right now?
