The Death Kiss of a High School "B"

So I’m a senior at a school where taking AP classes is basically a sport (you get 7 classes per year, my friend is taking 7 AP classes). I got a B in Calc BC and a 4 on the AP test. Will this score totally ruin my chances? Thanks! :slight_smile:

No, if you plan on applying to the very top colleges a 3.9 unweighted or above GPA is usually good enough. This would mean a couple of Bs over four years. A B in Calc BC means you aren’t a robot

No

You’re good man, I got into Cal for the 2015 fall semester with six Bs for freshman-junior year, two of which were from Algebra 2H, 2 from AP Chem, one from Calc AB… I got a 3 on Euro and Chem, a four on AB, and fives on US History and English Language. Berkeley admissions considers passing an AP test as beneficial to your application. As long as you have a strong SAT score, decent extracurriculars, and stellar essays, you are good. SAT subject scores will also benefit you if you score above the high 600s, otherwise they will not hurt you.

@leafonwind Don’t listen to Frenes. I got into Cal too. The average GPA was a 3.92 for unweighted, so as long as yoru GPA is a 3.92 or above, you’re fine. A high 600 is definitely not going to look “good”, but it won’t look bad. Aim to score in the low-mid 700s instead. Like a 730-740 at the very minimum.

@leafonwind , @2019goldenbear, A representative from Cal at a local college fair told me that scores 680/690ish or above benefit your application. Regardless if something doesn’t look “good”, it will not necessarily harm you.

Edit: To be fair, the area that I live in has very poor schools, and most students are somewhat noncompetitive. Most students at my school and the surrounding ones were either low income or first generation, and it is rare for people to score decently high on standardized tests. Cal does compare you to students at your school and possibly your local area who also apply, so if you are in an area where high scores are not uncommon, a high 600 might not necessarily help you, but if you are in an area like where I am, where kids get into Berkeley with 1800s and 1900s, scores that are slightly below Cal’s averages as a whole are not necessarily not going to help you.

@Frenes A 1900 is significantly below the Cal average of 2140, not “slightly below”

@2019goldenbear
The Cal average for 2015 was 2094…

Freaking out over one “B”?

You need to get a life.

@GMTplus7 , many undergraduate institutions compares you to your peers and what classes are offered at your school. To put it simply, I got 1 B, and I am no longer in the top 10% of my class.

@2019goldenbear I never said that a 1900 was slightly below the Cal average, I said that people I know from a lowly competitive area have gotten in with those scores. I said that scores overall that are slightly below the average are not the end of the world. At the end of the day, it is an average, for any amount of admits above the average, it is likely, but not necessarily certain, that there is a similar amount below the average.

@Teslaa Wrong site fam lmao…
