I know many forums have a thread like this, so I decided to create one! This is not intended to generalize anybody, but many College Confidential users will fall into at least one of these categories… So… Here’s your guide!
1.) The Testing Person
Where can you find them:
-They always hang around the “SAT and ACT Tests & Test Preparation” threads
-You can also find them posting in other threads that relate to test scores (eg. in High school class of **** threads when scores for a big test are just released)
What do they look like:
-If you go into their “replies” page, you’ll see a lot of comments in the “SAT and ACT Tests & Test Preparation” threads
-Ever signed a non-disclosure agreement? They’re the types who’ve violated this…a lot
What do they love:
-You’ll make them super-happy if you agree with a question they put down as theirs on a test
2.) The Person Who Makes Everyone Feel bad
Where can you find them:
-They’re usually in either “College Search & Selection,” “College Admissions,” “What Are My Chances?,” “SAT and ACT Tests & Test Preparation,” and sometimes “Summer Programs”
What do they look like:
-They’re the people with IO or USAO
-They’ve done graduate classes since middle school (it’s easy to see in the “What Are My Chances?” threads)
What do they love:
-They love it when you compare your stats to them while they “humbly” say to themselves, “aw, that’s cute”
3.) The Parent
Where can you find them:
-They’re everywhere, but they’ll usually post in adult-y sections of College Confidential (eg. “Ask The Dean Topics” or “Financial Aid & Scholarships”)
What do they look like:
-They’ll usually talk about their “S1,” “D2,” and so forth (sons, daughters, etc.)
-They never talk about super-private stuff about their children (only high school students will do that usually)
What do they love:
-Giving them relevant advice for their children’s college experiences makes them really happy (they care a lot about their children)
4.) The Really Worried Person
Where can you find them:
-They love to camp around the “What Are My Chances?” and “College Admissions” sections
What do they look like:
-A POST THAT HAS ALL CAPS USUALLY INDICATES THEY ARE WORRIED
-Long posts also indicate they are worried
-Posts that have pretty much all the details of their lives contained in them indicate them
What do they love:
-They love it when you give them reassurance, whether it be that test scores are only part of the holistic admissions process or that everyone makes mistakes at times
5.) The Low-Key Person
Where can you find them:
-Nowhere usually, but when you do, they’re scattered all over the forum
-There are A LOT OF THESE PEOPLE in the “Summer Programs” threads (they’ll pop out of nowhere and say they’ve been accepted to a summer program and disappear forever)
What do they look like:
-They’ll have 1-10 posts that are months apart
What do they love:
-They love reading about everybody’s lives
6.) The “I Need More Friends” (not implying they don’t have friends in real life) Person
Where can you find them:
-They’ll be in the “Pre-College Issues” and “College Confidential Community” threads
-Most of them like to digress in “High school class of ****” threads with others
What do they look like:
-Their posts are super-random
What do they love:
-Strike up a conversation with them; they love to talk about life in general
7.) The Addicted Person
Where can you find them:
-EVERYWHERE
What do they look like:
-They post a lot usually, but if they don’t, that means they’re just reading every thread there ever was
What do they love:
-They love new threads that pop up, especially ones in “FEATURED DISCUSSIONS ON COLLEGE CONFIDENTIAL”
8.) The Person Who Always Asks Questions
Where can you find them:
-They’re usually in the “College Admissions” threads, but you can find them throughout most of the forum
What do they look like:
-They start a lot of threads, rather than actually reply to them
-Sometimes, they’ll even get accused of hijacking threads
-Most of them seem super-worried (they usually are both #4 and #8)
What do they love:
-They love it when you answer their questions promptly and keep answering their follow-up questions
9.) The Obstinate Person
Where can you find them:
-You can find them in the “Colleges and Universities,” “College Admissions,” and “FEATURED DISCUSSIONS ON COLLEGE CONFIDENTIAL” threads
-Threads with the most controversy (eg. affirmative action threads) usually have them there
What do they look like:
-They’ll never agree with anybody in their posts unless you agree with them
-They post a lot in a single thread and move on to the next when that thread dies down
What do they love:
-They love it when you agree with them and support their position
10.) The Essay Person
Where can you find them:
-Most will be in the “College Essays” threads
What do they look like:
-They’ll post a lot of threads asking for help on essays or offering help on essays
-A lot stop posting when decisions start rolling in
What do they love:
-Reading and writing essays are either their passions or anathema to them (that’s why they need or offer help)
11.) The Sketchy Person
Where can you find them:
-Everywhere unfortunately, though they only actually post once in a while
What do they look like:
-They like to solicit for essays, test questions, etc.
-They have very few posts
What do they love:
-They love it when you give them information (sometimes, they’ll just get the information by only reading the posts and not actually posting themselves)
12.) The Newbie
Where can you find them:
-Most will start off in the “College Admissions” and “What Are My Chances?” threads
What do they look like:
-They’re really worried about where they are in comparison to other College Confidential users (#4)
-They ask a lot of questions (#8)
What do they love:
-They love it when you help them out and answer their questions
13.) The Moderator
Where can you find them:
-Everywhere (ready with their Thor…I mean ban…hammer)
What do they look like:
-College Confidential is their part-time job; they have thousands of posts usually
-They warn people a lot, especially in the “SAT and ACT Tests & Test Preparation” threads
What do they love:
-When you follow the rules and guidelines (both College Confidential and real-world ones)
Thanks for reading everyone! I just had some free time on my hands and decided to make this quickly… This list is based on my observations, so they’re definitely not…definitive…see what I did there?
Post below the category you think you fall into!
