The Dog's Toy

I actually bought that toy for the puppy, but neither dog cared for it. It is funny how that attach themselves to one toy or another. I had a dog that loved his “blankie.” It was a bath towel that we got monogrammed with his name on it. He had that towel for over 12 years with out a hole one in it; he would just curl up with it and suck on the end.

These are supposed to be good: [Hemp Dog Toys Double Layered Hemp Ball Plush Squeaky Dog Toy](http://www.alphadogtoys.com/hemp-dog-toys-ball.html) I was on a hunt two Christmas’s ago to find a soft squeaky for my dog that, yes, would last more the ten minutes. I bought a few from Pet mountain on line and all of them bit the dust after no longer then three days - except for the rubber squeakers. Our dog really likes the soft plushes but cannot resist the urge to rip them up. Even the stuffless one were chewed up quickly. Very frustrating.

lje62, nothing useful comes up when I google dog toy kevlar. Darn.

I read a stat today that the average person in the US conducts 1.5 google searches a day. I think I’m running more like 1.5 a half hour.

My new strategy is to buy multipacks of plush squeaky dog toys at Costco. They work out to about $2 each. I give our guy one a week as a special treat.

Our Golden retriever can destroy a plush stuff toy in 30 seconds flat… but the American Kennel Club ones have lasted a couple of years. Yes he has eaten the feet off the duck but the basic shape is still there. The key seems to be no protruding things that can be gnawed on.

He also has the squirrel and the pheasant…

At the top and side of my screen right now: ad for dog toys, Crazy Critters–the stuffing-free plush toy your dog will love. We actually have the fox toy from this company and my Schnauzer likes it.

We have several stuffed toys that make realistic sounds (rooster, cat) and both dogs like those. They have lasted quite a while.

My dog used to eat through the black Kongs in one sitting :O. However, at age 4, the soft Tuffie toys (strength 10) last a month or two. My Dad’s dog was the same way. Catahoulas have quite the jaw strength!

Our dog’s favorite toys are a flattened soccer balls that he makes himself  He methodically peels the leather off of a new soccer ball to get to the inflatable core, then punctures the core with his sharp teeth and - voila! - he has a toy that he can carry around in his mouth.

My store is known for having the best dog toy department in the area – and it’s certainly the most fun part of buying and merchandising for the store. It’s amusing to me to hear everyone discuss and describe toys that I recommend as tougher than most of the others.

Dogs are generally pre-programmed to ‘kill the squeak’ – that’s why they like the squeaky toys, and why they destroy them. And, having bought and sold somewhere in the neighborhood of 150,000 dog toys, I do have my opinions! Essentially, you do get what you pay for. And most of them are made in China. If you want USA toys – and there are some pretty good ones – it’s expensive!

Tuffies makes a really solid toy, with a squeak, but some dogs are frustrated at not being able to get to the squeak. GoDog (the dragons described above) are a really nice line … and also Hugglehounds. I love love love the AKC line. Unfortunately, it’s discontinued by the manufacturer. Some of them are still available, and when my distributor has a group I buy the lot.

My Shelties never destroy a toy … but my new puppy loves the AKC Lamb which is the very first of the AKC line I bought. Found it in a big box, had never seen it before, had to have it, my dogs loved it, and then I spent 18 months trying to locate a place to buy the line – and then talking my distributor into carrying them. (If I wanted to buy direct from Jakks, I would have had to take 24 pieces of each of something like 30 items. I usually buy 3s until i know it’s a hit, and then 6s.)

thanks for the info , cnp. I looked up the names you mentioned. The Hugglehounds is the one that I just recently bought for my chewer…it was the flattened bear. Do you have an opinion about which ones are more durable ? I don’t mind spending $20 if it lasts a little…

The Hugglehounds guy used to work for GoDog. He redeveloped his products … and I think upped the chew factor. I think they are pretty good … and yes $20! They are very popular in my store … I just love them!

Disclaimer: they are all play toys not chew toys. Don’t leave a serious chewer alone with any toy, no matter how indestructible it claims to be … because NOTHING is indestructible.

cnp, do you have an online store ? :D

No …it’s a real place that actually exists, all 3000 sf of it!

I simply cannot pull off the online store – on top of everything else I do and the issues I have with employees, I am not willing to take on online ordering. I had someone today ask for delivery service … and I just don’t see it happening!

I think my chewer hasn’t killed the dragons is there is only one squeaker inside; the toys with multiple squeaker seem to die the quickest. She also does not like toys to have labels/tags on them, so I have to remove those first or I know the toy will only last minutes. The dragons have lasted almost a year, and while both dogs do take them in the yard, I do make sure they come right back in.

I just checked the Go Dog site and see they now make dinosaurs; we will have to get one or two of those to add to the collection!!

cnp55, THANK YOU. I’m looking at the GoDog site and laughing at the pictures of dogs holding the stuffies in their mouths. There is something always utterly endearing about a dog with a plush sheep in its mouth.

BunsenBurner, sounds like your dog needs to go into the toy manufacturing business. :)

My next question: how does my dog know that the thing I’m holding is a new dog toy? He doesn’t go nuts when I’m carrying a plush kid toy, but if I’m holding something destined for him, he goes crazy. I wonder what subtle clues I’m giving off.

I’ve often wondered that too^^^. Fortunately, my dog only plays with her toys, not socks, shoes, or anything else. Well, actually, her all time favorite toy that she has had for years is a little pillow that someone made. She decided right away that it was hers, but that’s the only non-dog toy item that she has claimed.

cnpp55, does anyone make dog pacifiers? (I know it’s a weird question.)

They know it’s a dog toy because it smells like the pet store!

TFH/Nylabone makes a pacifier … but it’s a soft nylon one. Cute, but not what you are talking about.

And thanks for the reports on the dragons (and dinos) – I’m OUT! Need to reorder. Can’t keep them in stock … they are Sooooo cute and relatively durable.
