The DOJ Has Ruled that Yale SOM Discriminates in Medical School Admissions

I will note the DOJ ONLY considered applicants’ MCAT and GPAs in its ruling. Yale uses holistic evaluations in the admission process.

The DOJhas basically accused Yale of using a holistic admission process to intentionally circumvent federal laws on discrimination.

You mean, not everyone they admitted was white - I assume.

According to the DOJ’s reasoning (the document has several tables with GPA and MCAT scores), it looks like Yale may have also admitted “too many” White students.

It is interesting to me that the text of the document lumps together “White and Asian” (and it is also interesting that “White” comes first in that phrase), even though the scores for Asian students are higher than White students.

That is, the document claims,

The Department finds that after Harvard, Yale discriminated against other applicants to benefit preferred race classes of Black and Hispanic.

but one could also interpret this data as

The Department finds that after Harvard, Yale discriminated against other applicants to benefit preferred race classes of White, Black, and Hispanic.

However, the DOJ would have a difficult time with such a claim in the current political context.

Reminder that this is not the political forum so facts can be shared, but not political opinions. And any conversations about race in admission needs to be moved to the political forum.

Oops - can’t say it on this thread.

Maybe we need a mirror thread in the political forum if people want to discuss this, then. It’s difficult to discuss at all without bringing up race in admission, since that is what the decision is about.
