<p>This is an interesting article I found on the Chronicle. It details the story of a black football player who was recruited and admitted to the University of Memphis despite being almost illiterate. I think it shows the interplay between college athletics, declining academic standards, and poverty. It is quite revealing and eye-opening what sort of things passes through the university system.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, the above is not a new phenomenon…but a long-running issue in many Div. 1 schools. </p>

<p>Recalled reading an essay published in the early '90s by an incoming president of UCLA stating how it was unconscionable that his new school had recently allowed a couple of Div. 1 athletes to GRADUATE with UCLA diplomas without basic literacy skills.</p>

<p>I think Memphis did a better job than I expected trying to improve his reading and writing skills (even if they did not entirely succeed). He sounds like an admirable kid with a lot on his plate, I hope his life improves.</p>
