The Fund for Public Interest

D called me to say she’d been offered a summer job with the Fund for Public Interest (“The Fund”) as a canvasser. She said she’d be doing fundraising for a number of different groups, with the opportunity to earn a commission. Immediately bells went off in my head because I really dislike giving to charities that do business that way. I mentioned my concerns (didn’t help the mother-daughter relationship much there), and we both googled the Fund at the same time and found some entries that indicate some serious labor problems. I also went to their website and couldn’t find any information about management or a board of directors. Very puzzling. Dug up some corporate officer information on the commonwealth of Massachusetts site, and am even more puzzled about what I’m learning.

Does anyone have any experience with this group?

Oh, they are the current name for the fundraising arm of the PIRGs.

Yes, I have experience with them. I worked for them (in Massachusetts) for about a week and a half in the summer of 2005. Here is what I have to say to your D:

RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY NOW! DO NOT TAKE THE JOB! YOU DO NOT WANT IT!

They lie through their teeth, have sleazy labor practices, and don’t give a damn about their employees or the safety of their employees. I am happy to provide more details if you wish.

Wow! It’s a crying shame this group exploits idealism like this.

Here’s the info in Wikipedia: [Public Interest Research Group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Public Interest Research Group - Wikipedia)

The criticisms seem to echo yours, FFS.
