<p>The death of any college student should not be minimized and the loss is certainly something I can’t even begin to comprehend. Eve Carson’s senseless murder has become major national news and has touched thousands if not millions of people across the nation.</p>
<p>To try to compare the way her death has impacted the state and nation and unified even the greatest of college rivals in grief to the unfortunate death of the Duke grad student is not a valid comparison.</p>
<p>This is NOT about UNC or Duke, let’s not let it go there, please…</p>
<p>I might be biased because I like Ohio State, but I do think that OSU-UM has the best rivalry in college sports. Duke-UNC is still really good, probably second to OSU-UM, but there was even a war preceding the OSU-UM rivalry. That game also consistently breaks records in attendance, piling in over 100,000 people every year.</p>
<p>Duke student leaders organized the effort which touched the hearts of my UNC son and his friends who were classmates, fellow Morehead Scholars, and close close friends of Eve’s.</p>
<p>He called home to tell us how moved they were by the thoughtfulness and efforts. Florists in Durham donated the ribbons, Duke students made them and passed them out…to think that Coach K didn’t have access to a ribbon is a bit of a stretch…</p>
<p>I agree edad (with post #21). However, the thread started about the game, NOT the tragic death of this amazing young lady.</p>
<p>However, I do not understand why you think that one person’s death is any more or less significant than another. Every student’s life is significant, and the grief experienced by families and friends are no different for any student over another.</p>
<p>My heart goes out to any family that loses a child, especially from such a senseless tragedy. I can’t imagine what either of these families are going through.</p>
<p>sokkermom: All the fans I could see in those stands were wearing the ribbons; the UNC staff wore them; the ESPN reporters/commentators were wearing them. (The commentators also mentioned Abhijit Mahato, the Duke graduate student at the pre-game coverage, by the way.)</p>
<p>While both these deaths were tragic, senseless, and truly unspeakable, the fact remains that, sadly, UNC’s student body president, Eve Carson, was an extremely prominent member of our UNC community. She was very well-known and well-loved by everyone on that campus. I think unless you knew her, or are familiar with her incredible presence, it’s impossible to even contemplate her loss and what it means and the impact it does, and will have, for a very long time. Without exaggeration, she was such a bright and shining light for her generation and for us all. </p>
<p>I am impressed with the Duke students, though, who immediately came forward in the hours after the announcement, to help in any way they could and with this tribute last night.</p>
<p>H just said that he saw an interview with Coach K on ESPN where Coach K spoke very passionately and sincerely about the senseless death of Eva. (I did not see it.)</p>
<p>His opinion is that unless you have personally met Coach K, it is absurd to speculate. For what it is worth, S has met him, and thinks the world of him too.</p>
<p>Personally, I thought that the actions of the Duke community in honoring Eve Carson were very thoughtful and compassionate. They certainly were not required and went beyond what might have been expected. However, as Duke community did chose to honor Eve Carson, in my opinion Coach K showed a lack of judgment, and class, in choosing not to participate. Whatever, he may have said this morning does not change that.</p>
