As to the Silicon Valley dating pool, as one of daughters once put it,
“The odds are good, but the goods are odd…”

My son lives in a mountain town with more men then women and as he says “they (women) get to try everyone out.”

^ Ewww. I hope that wasn’t meant as I interpreted it.

I had the impression that women actually had the advantage when using dating services such as OKCupid. Women tend to receive large numbers of contacts and can pick and choose among them.

Not in LA. Don’t move there. It’s not advantageous for female for as long as I live here.

One of my previous coworkers is a female living in Silicon Valley. She should have read this article. LOL. Last time I talked to her, she still complained that she could not find a good candidate (not to date only, but to have inclination for dating which could lead to a marriage.) I told her that her odds would be much worse if she were a male in SV. I heard she has plenty of opportunity to “try everyone out.”)

Another female coworker complains that it is not easy to find a young man who is serious about dating. (“serious” = “not dating for fun only”.)

Marissa Myer from Yahoo had to be introduced to her husband, I don’t think SV is better.

DS went to a college where there are more female students than the males. But he did not have a date (at least GF-like date, meaning dating the same gal multiple times) all through college years. He must have done something wrong.

He finally “scored one”, N years after college. He must have learned from his “mistakes” (including “not drinking at all” in college.) Hopefully, his GF would value him as a “keeper”. (We have not met her due to long distance. But we have given her a gift.)

I moved to New York to find a wife, and it worked. S16 is not interested in going anywhere with more males than females.

It is more important for the niche than the region. If a woman works in engineering field, for sure she will see way more man than woman disregarding the region.

Funny that Colorado is mentioned – many young women here say this isn’t a great place to meet men, because so many men move here to play in the mountains. They spend their weekends not socializing but rather mountain biking/rock climbing/skiing/snowboarding. Women who aren’t into these sports - or good enough to keep up - find themselves guy-less.

Bill, see my post #7.

@katliamom, I was in a predominantly female program in grad school and didn’t go on a single date those two years. However, it was a different story once I was working in that field in NYC. I went on more dates in two years than I had in my entire life up to that point (I was almost 30 when I moved there). Ratios guarantee nothing, I suppose.

Yes, but so are some of the other women (i.e. apparent competitors for the available straight men who are not really competitors).

Today, we went to a restaurant area in our city, A woman-woman couple (both of them are likely in their late 20s or early 30s) hold their hands while walking past us. I think they are LGBT. Am I right? (I think, in this country, two adult women would not hold their hands while walking with each other, unless they are a couple.)

I have never seen something like this. (Well…,it is in California after all. What else can I expect?!)

deleted. Don’t know why it was posted twice.

Mcat, you’ve never seen a lesbian couple?

I’m not sure what California has to do with it… Other than I’m shocked you live there and have never seen this. I’ve seen gay and lesbian couples in very small towns in conservative states.

Yes, most likely they are a couple. Though truthfully I hold hands sometimes while walking with my close (mostly straight) female friends. That’s pretty rare for most people though.

You’ve never seen women holding hands? (Or men holding hands?) I find that surprising. Same-sex couples displaying affection is a common sight where I live - and not anywhere near California!

I have never seen a lesbian couple. I have not seen two women of that age holding hands.
