2) What’s the best thing about your 2nd choice?
3) The worst thing about your 2nd choice?
4) Why it would be ugly in your head/heart if you end up there?

(even if you already lucked into your first choice like me)

Almost everything. Many of its positives are almost exactly the same positives as Dartmouth. It even has a leg up on that it’s smaller, like a more traditional LAC, and I prefer that. Also, more emphasis is placed on the honor system at W&L, and I love the thought of not having to consider safety (of my person or belongings) as an issue in the least at Washington & Lee. Like Dartmouth, I’m in love with the place and atmosphere.

There are only a few things I’m worried about vs. Dartmouth. A different type of person seems to go to both schools, and while I certainly would not be lying if I said I have both types of people in me, I’m not entirely convinced that the homogeneity at W&L wouldn’t bother me. The fact that W&L is consistently placed among (at the top of, actually, but those rankings are generally ridiculous) the schools with the happiest people eases my fears.

It wouldn’t be. I’m not even completely sure that I won’t end up there. Both places are too fantastic for words.

The Diversity of the school and the size makes Amherst an excellent school. I know that if I were to get in and to go there I would be getting the equivalent of an ivy league education. Plus its also in a 5 college consortiun which is great.

Personally there is nothing that I’m worried about when it comes to Amherst, its just that Dartmouth offers a little bit more for me.[i.e D-Plan, great social science departments, my prosepctive major is political science(government)]

Like willywonka it just would not be, its not like Amherst is my dreaded safety school or else I would not have made it my second choice.

Daughter’s second choice (and My first until she won me over) Williams (tweaked out Amherst which was her first choice until she went to Williams and Dartmouth).

There is just a calmness when you go to Williamstown, looking at the mountains is breathtaking. She liked the purple ice cream and the fact that she sat in on an English class where they were reading Mama Day by Gloria Naylor. There are a lot of similarities between Williams and Dartmouth, but the people won her over( she kept the Williams jacket that she won, and yes I still wear my Williams t-shirt around the house. I am waiting for my winter carnival shirt).

She thought the 5 college consortium was great. The person who hosted her lives 2 blocks from my sister and they really hit it off well. ONe of her good friends is an 08 at mount holyoke. Nice little town.

Can’t complain because she would have gotten a great education at 2nd/3rd choice, but she really loves being at Dartmouth.

J, I promise I did not steer you wrong, you are going to love Dartmouth. (I’d hate for you to hunt my kid down and shake your finger and say “it’s all your mother’s fault”

Sybbie, purple ice cream?! This Williams alum never had it (but I’d try it the next time I’m in Williamstown). Where is there purple ice cream? :)

Thanks! Sorry to hijack this thread but I had to know about the purple ice cream. I’ll be in Williamstown in April and I want to hunt this down!

Back to Dartmouth … (hope there isn’t dark green ice cream available anywhere)

2) The community atmosphere, the teachers, the student body in general, the great respect of Dartmouth in the academic world, the D-plan (though it still is a little confusing to me, but if it is what I think it is, then it’s a plus)

3)There’s really not very much “wrong” with Dartmouth, though I guess I would have to say the winters (I’m from California) and perhaps the seclusion (I live near a city. However, I don’t know if this is a bad thing, since I’ve never tried it before. I’ve heard that it is also good because it turns the focus more on the academics and student body- so we’ll see).

4)There would be nothing “ugly” at all with going to Dartmouth. I would be so immensely happy that words would not be able to express my feelings.

assuming i’m pretending that i actually have a shot at these schools…

1) Yale

2) I love the residential colleges, and the fact that it’s little over an hour’s drive from home. the campus is also wonderful.

3) lol - New Haven. Just a bit Shady with a capital S. Also, apparently there isn’t as much undergrad focus, but my friend that’s there loves it. Snobbier students, maybe?

4) lol. take a look around this forum - everywhere you look, amazing beyond amazing things about Dartmouth are proudly on display, with alumni and current students validating them and gushing their Dartmouth love. I’d be thrilled to go to Yale…but there is just so much in the Dartmouth community that I’m not sure would be present in New Haven.

Notre Dame

Almost everything

Location. I’m from the New Haven, CT area originally, and I really miss the hills and mountains living out here in Ohio. Plus, there doesn’t seem to be much to do around South Bend off campus.

Nothing really, ND is a very close second to Dartmouth.
