The Grammys

^^^ it sounded like it wasn’t in synch…

I didn’t get Billie either… But when listening to different music on the radio then steaming I played her music and it grew on me. Listen to “Ocean Eyes”. As stated she wrote that at 14 and performed it at 16… Regardless of some of her songs that I don’t care for or get, she’s creating a new type of sound for herself and at 18 will have new artists trying to copy her. That’s crazy at her age.

I just re-watched this on Youtube, with good headphones. There was absolutely no “squeal” whatsoever from her. She sang it very softly in her lower range and did not try to overpower the Boyz, one of whom actually went a little overboard with the melisma imo. I find your characterization of her singing rather odd and definitely unfair considering that she only sang the last line of the song at the same time as the Boyz were singing, and again, it was very soft.

What I did feel at the time and again on second listen was that it almost seemed like they were not even singing in the same key. She mentioned to someone offstage as she started another song that she needed to be able to hear her piano better through her earpiece, and I wondered if she wasn’t given the starting note when she began the song. In a cappella, you need that reference note (unless you have absolute pitch, which is the ability to sing a note properly without benefit of a reference-a rare talent) or you will have no clear idea of what key you are singing in or if you are not exactly on pitch. When the Boyz came in, it just didn’t sound right.

I didn’t think it was a great performance from any of them, actually. As talented as they are, if their earpieces weren’t working properly, it kind of dooms the a cappella performance from the get go. You HAVE to be able to hear each other in order to stay in tune.

I think the artist “Her” is amazing… Like a young Alicia Keys. She doesn’t write hits, just great songs.

@BunsenBurner. About 6 years ago we got a car with Sirius XM radio free trial which I loved and now we subscribe. Last year Billie Eilish was one of the most popular on the station. I’ve discovered so much music on Alt Nation, another band Cage the Elephant also won a Grammy (I DVRd so didn’t see show yet). So I’m not Billie’s demographic but she is talented, her co-writer/producer brother has a new song on recently, catchy.

I do not disagree that she is talented. Her music has a unique style. She definitely deserved the New Artist award. Do not agree with the other ones, but I am not the one giving out the Grammys.

I agree she is talented. I don’t personally like her music-something about the way she sings is off-putting to me. But that’s just about personal preference as opposed to saying she isn’t talented or doesn’t deserve the acclaim.

I respected her gumption when she said she refuses to wear revealing clothing, not because she is modest or judgmental about it, just that she wants her music to be the focus, not her body size. It was apparently a reaction to all the body shaming nonsense that female singers have to put up with. And she’s right. How often do male singers and rappers face intense scrutiny and online vitriol when they gain 5 lbs?

And I get the argument that it’s a dang shame that someone would have to hide their body to keep from being harassed online, but this is the society we live in, so she took the action she felt best about.
