Congratulations! That’s a big boy!
Congrats!
Congratulations!!
Older GD starts Kindergarten soon. She may be the youngest in her class as she has a fall birthday and will be turning five about two months after school begins. The school changed its cut off from Sept. 1 to Dec. 31 this year.
I’m not sure GD is ready, but obviously that’s not my decision. I know that I am not ready and neither is H. ![]()
I just hope she has a positive experience. I’ve been reading quite a few upbeat books to her about starting school, and we’ve talked about making friends, taking turns, asking for help, learning new things, etc.
Fingers crossed.
16 months old GD is a world traveler. She just video called me from Nice. Her parents are much braver than we were. We only were taking kids to Lake Tahoe vacations every summer until they were in school. She already been to Paris, Hawaii and multiple in US flights. She doesn’t like headphones and takes them off immediately which creates problem when she watches iPad during the flight. I can see how annoying it might be for people around, but alternative is to listen to her cry. Not sure of the solution.
GD1 and GS1 go into first grade and kindergarten, after having been in K and K4 this past year at the same private school. Each has 3 sets of uniforms and the family does wash at least mid-week and on weekend. They have the same uniform through 2nd grade. In addition to what they had, they purchased $500 worth of the brand-named uniform clothing at the uniform store - I think they got an early discount for shopping when they did. On some pieces, there are lower priced alternatives, but DD1 finds the name brands hold up well. Since there is GS2 and GD2 to pass down the uniforms, they get their bang for the buck. They begin classes Aug 12th.
The dad is working with his Army bosses to adjust his work hours to accommodate child drop off and pick up. This way he can drop off two kids and ‘shares’ the child responsibilities. Part of the Army issue is that he is supposed to work out with his command for 30 minutes at the Army base, but he actually works in a building at the Air Force Base; he also has to get a better work out than his ‘group’ work out, but he doesn’t have the flexibility due to all child care and school are away from both of these bases.
GD, age 3.5, stayed with me this weekend. Right before she went to bed, she accidentally broke a vase. I quickly told her not to move. I then lifted her to put her in my bed so she wouldn’t step on broken pieces. While I was cleaning up, she kept on saying, " It’s ok. It was an accident." I told her that it wasn’t really ok because now I didn’t have the vase any more. She then asked me not to tell her mom and dad. I told her that I have to tell her parents everything, but because it was an accident they probably wouldn’t get mad. I told her that everyone breaks things every once in a while. I didn’t want to get in a habit of not telling her parents things even if it meant she might get in trouble.
My kids had a lot of options for the uniform -shorts, long pants, jumpers, skorts, red/white/blue polos in long and short sleeves, sweaters, etc. I was more excited than they were (the jumpers were cute). I bought a lot at the used uniform sale but had to buy the skorts at the uniform store. $$$
After a few weeks, it became clear they would only wear a red short sleeve polo, skort, and white socks. Every day. For 6 years. I did a lot of wash the first year, but my kids were a lot smaller than their friends so we started getting freebees and I think ended up with about 7 skorts and tons of red polos.
The uniform skorts/skirt/jumpers are made of iron and do last forever.
DDs were able to have uniform skorts at a certain age, and they both had two, and I did a quick wash cycle every other day of them. DD2 could not handle the stain cleaner on the white polo, so we stuck with the darker school color polo.
Their school does used uniform sale and when students have moved away, DD has been given some uniforms that way (she has often made a casserole dish and given other help to the moving family). DD also has given gift cards for the moving family to use for meals and whatever.
You just made me feel better about waiting a little while to see if GD has a preference. My earlier guess was that she’d prefer the shorts and short sleeve polo since that’s both coolest (we live in a generally warm climate and she dislikes long sleeves) and easiest to manage in the bathroom. H thinks she will prefer the jumper (which requires pull on shorts underneath) because I bought her look-alike doll a matching jumper and blouse.
I’m still waiting on items ordered from the uniform company back in May to arrive. The more recent order might not get here before Thanksgiving.
GD is starting at a new school this September. It’s a prep school in Brooklyn. It goes from nursery to 12th grade. Yes, there were testing of GD as well as interviewing of the parents. According to D1, GD did better than they did at the interview.
Last week GD said she liked lemonade (never had it until this summer). They asked her what’s mommy’s favorite drink. She said water. What’s daddy’s favorite drink, she said beer. What’s PoPo’s favorite drink, she said wine. We told her not to say that when she sees her new teachers. I think I may need to change my favorite drinks.
The shorts had a zipper and a button, but the skort was elastic waist. Younger kid HATES buttons (even as an adult) so the shorts/pants were out. The older one is left handed so the shorts/pants were more difficult for her and she’s always the one to take the easy way out. Skorts it was.
My D loved her jumper when she wore a uniform in 1st and 2nd grade before changing schools. I also loved is, as stated by others, those jumpers were made of steel; came out of the dryer looking like new! She also wore bike short under them so she could play on the playground without her underwear exposed! She did wear the khaki shorts and polo sometimes, but preferred the jumper, and never wore the long khaki pants.
My DIL sent a picture of her 5 1/2 year old D who wanted to dress herself for camp where it was 88 degrees early this morning. She has on a pair of green leggings with striped shorts over them, a t-shirt, and low brown booties. The caption read, Thank goodness for uniforms!
Talked to D1 and Twin B yesterday via video chat and Twin B reminded me more than once that I need to fix her flamingo dress when I get there. She even explained to me how I was going to fix it. That I needed to buy a new pink T shirt and sew it to the flamingo bottom. (Which is exactly how I will do the repair.)
BTW, I have an official move date now. I signed a contract with the movers this morning and bought a one way plane ticket.I’ll be leaving the last week of August and will be there in time for Labor Day and the first day of pre-school.
I’m thinking, based on my conversation with Twin B that I’ll probably be setting up my sewing machine sooner rather than later once I’m there.
Here’s a pink flamingo tshirt for “in the meantime.”

This is a very important Gramma job. And don’t forget Halloween is coming and you might be needed for costumes.
D2- first child. healthy baby boy! both are doing well! I’m Lolly and H is Pops again! First grandson. Having had only daughters and granddaughters this will be different!
DD’s school always had girls wear shorts (bike shorts) under uniform skirts and jumpers, as does GD1’s school. Those uniform pieces hold up super well, color and stiffness.
Being a grandparent is wonderful. Our grandkids are in those delicious early ages.
Also I am the repair person with sewing tasks with DDs and Gkids, and occasionally for SIL.
I understand about the buttons and the child wanting to fully dress themselves - GD1 needs help with uniform blouse buttons and the one button on the skirt part of her uniform jumper.
I am left handed and DD1 (mother of the Gkids) is left-handed. Believe GS2 (almost 3) is the leftie out of her four; unknown with GD2 who is just one. My brother and I (out of 5 kids) are the lefties – don’t know if either of my parents might have naturally been lefties because they grew up in Switzerland in the 1930’s when you had to do everything with school with your right hand.
