The Grandparent Thread

It’s been a few days but I forgot to mention D sent the video of the costume parade at GD’s daycare last Friday. The kids were all walking, class by class in their costumes - all except one girl who was dancing to the music. Guess who???

I hope she never loses that.

My brother didn’t talk until he was 3 because my sister talked enough for both of them (still does). My mother had his hearing tested 3 times (and today I’m sure they would have been testing him for autism). He never was a big talker.

My daughter only talked to me when she was 2-3 years old. Didn’t talk at daycare until after lunch (just wasn’t a morning person) to the point when one day she shouted at another kid in the morning and all the teachers said “Was that M”? they said she was just a zombie in the mornings. Now? She never shuts up (very much like my sister).

I’m sure you’ll soon have two chatterboxes and beg for just a moment of silence!

A girl in my D’s 4 year old preschool class never talked in class, not even when playing one on one. Her mom told me that her D talked at home - just not in front of other people. I lost touch after preschool, but I had the girl (now young woman) in class numerous times when I subbed in the local high school. She was one of the students I had trouble getting to stop chatting all the time!

This weekend to went to help out with GD2. She is about 8 weeks ago and seemed to be a bit colicky or have issues with her stomach (a lot of gas and not pooping regularly). While I was there, I was able to feed her and sooth her to give D1 and her husband a break. The son in law said I was a closer in feeding the baby (got her to take in more milk). I said to them that I did raise 2 daughters and this new one is just like her mom (with a lot of stomach issues).

How wonderful that you could help them out. I am not a pro on this myself, but my D (who is a SLP) and SIL use this anti-colic bottle for their infant.Dr. Brown’s Natural Flow® Anti-Colic Options+™ Narrow Glass Baby Bottle, with Level 1 Slow Flow Nipple | Dr. Brown's Baby If your kids are not already using something like this, it may be worth a try.

Congrats to all and enjoy every minute with your granddaughter!

Thank you. I will pass it along.

Another thought - sometimes eating issues are related to tongue and/or lip ties. It might be worth asking the pediatrician about.

Then there is my kid. My D had colic for nine months. At nine months, she just started walking out of the blue - and the colic stopped.

D & SIL do a month of gratitude activity with Nashville GD where they add a turkey feather to a cardboard turkey cutout each day. D whispered to me in church this morning that GD added me to the turkey this morning which seemed like a great honor until she told me that GD had added their beloved dog who died when GD was 9 months old yesterday.
Going to FL on Tuesday to stay with those 2 GDs while parents are out of town Wednesday - Saturday. I do not know my way around their city, but sounds like I only have to get the girls to rendezvous point for bus stop for oldest & carpool for youngest to daycare each morning. Former nanny will do afternoon pickups. Looking forward to seeing them, but a little nervous about logistics.

D2 had the tongue tied procedure and D1 is cutting out dairy from her diet. I remember D1 started getting better after 2 months. Hopping GD2 will grow out of it soon. The good thing is she is a good sleeper. She can sleep 8 hours at night now.

Good to have Grandma to help. My daughter was so small that it took a long time to get food into her but she slept better when a little fuller. If I rushed, she spit it back up (and that was not good).

Grandma’s might have a little more time to let the little ones take their time when eating. Good job!

Plus one on Dr. Brown’s bottles!

Today, we helped our kids move some of their stuff to their new house. I got to clean the new house and then to babysit Little Miss Mess who just recently turned 18 months. We have not seen her in 2 weeks… but as soon as I walked in, she pointed her cute little finger at me and shrieked “Nyanya!” Meaning Nana. Melted my heart! Absolutely surprising because she has not called me anything before! I guess her mom has been telling her all morning that “Nana is coming soon!”

DDs did not really have any stomach issues, but my mom also had us giving some fennel water (prepared by heating water with fennel seeds and having it cool off). Provided a little bit of fluids and something that ‘from the old country’ is something soothing for their little tummies. When they are thirsty and not hungry.

GD, 19 months old, has busy social schedule. Twice a week soccer, ones art, once music and two days spending with us where I try to fit long park visits and library visits on rainy days. She likes flipping through the books and looking at the pictures. She is so much fun.

We just started our new schedule of watching our youngest grandson (3 months) and our new grand puppy (also 3 months) Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays. Our dog plays with the puppy which is helpful. New grandson is pretty easy except that he prefers to take his naps on my lap rather than in his crib, so not much gets done. But as we know this stage doesn’t last long.

We’re doing the school run for older GD today since her parents are sick. Also keeping little GD all day. She’s napping with her grandpa now.

It’s clear that D was hit hard by whatever bug made older GD very sick on Sunday; she can’t keep anything down. SiL didn’t appear sick this morning, but he always has more complaints about aches and illness than anyone else. Any time D has been sick or recovering from surgery, he’s always been too tired and achy to help her, so we’ve pitched in and often ended up getting sick or injured.

Little GD has had a cold for several days and has no appetite. SiL blames it on pollen, despite the reports showing no pollen issues here at the moment. I hope she doesn’t get worse or develop the GI problems her sister had.

We’ll be going to bed very early tonight for sure.

Update - younger GD got sick shortly after getting home. D still feels awful and texted that she’s sorry about the GDs exposing us to whatever they have.

This morning H isn’t feeling great and is napping. I’m torn between trying to sterilize the whole house and taking a nap myself. Here’s hoping some peppermint tea will help me get through the laundry and dishes, if nothing else.

How do grandparents who have full time responsibility for their grandchildren survive?

Twin A has walking pneumonia. She’s been sick for 8 days now and just isn’t improving. She’ll start antibiotics tomorrow morning. Her doctor called the order in, but A had already gone to bed by the time the prescription was ready.

Poor kiddo has been pretty miserable–though she seemed to be doing pretty well over the weekend, even took 1.5 mile hike with Dad and her twin yesterday.

PSA-- there has been an uptick in the number of walking pneumonia cases among children under 12 this fall. If your child or grandchild has cold-like symptoms (cough, sore throat, headache, earache, stuffy or runny nose, intermittent fever) that just don’t go away after 5-8 days, please consult a physician.

Also us older folks should be aware too since we’re more susceptible to the bacteria that causes this type of pneumonia. (This bacteria isn’t included in either the pneumonia vaccines.)

I hope your little granddaughter feels better soon, and her twin doesn’t catch walking pneumonia too.

Our older GD had it the first month of school, and it was shared with her sister and mom, and then us. The girls developed ear infections. It took me over a month to finally shake the cough, and we all felt tired for a long time.

We’re hearing more about flu, walking pneumonia, RSV and Hand, Foot & Mouth disease here than I can ever recall. Our GDs had HF&M last month and their spots still haven’t faded. I keep having to cancel my dentist appointment so I don’t pass on the latest respiratory bug.

Ditto! I don’t think we ever experienced the HFM bug with our kids… we learned about it when they started having kids of their own!
