The Grandparent Thread

I have to say I had no idea people were that upset upon finding out the truth about Santa. Not judging, just surprised. I remember being a bit disappointed and feeling some of the magic was gone, but not being really upset (or very surprised).

I don’t recall any big feeling of betrayal when I found out that there was no Santa. It never made sense to me anyway. It was just nice that people were being kind to one another.

This is a funny but not story related to yours.
My husband’s daughter was maybe 8, and my kids are 2 and 4 years younger than she is. She badgered her dad into admitting there was no Santa, as they were driving in for her Christmas visit. Then of course she cried her eyes out.
His reasoning for telling was “He didn’t want to lie to her.”
I was furious when he told me and said “You’ve been lying all these years, and you couldn’t lie for another DAY OR TWO???”
He went to bed very unhappy and sad that night.

Nowhere to share this but here at the moment.
My youngest grandchild, 7.5 months, was gifted a Big Bro t-shirt this evening by his parents. This was meant, obviously, as a reveal - but to only me.
Merry Christmas, Grandma!
My DD say’s she’s 4 weeks! The sibs will be 15 months apart.
I am delighted, of course, but not allowed to share just yet.
So you all are also sworn to secrecy.

With the holiday break, we’ve been seeing a ton of my GS. I’ve been the designated nap provider since Saturday. To everyone’s shock, I’ve gotten him down in the pack-n-play or crib everytime

Well…. we are on a family “vacation” with older s, DIL and their 2 kids. Everyone has been sick, grandson had a major meltdown early yesterday morning at the slopes so son and I brought him back to the condo. My nose was running like a faucet anyway. Well, now his (grandson’s) ski boots are missing. DIL did get to ski with 7 yo granddau yesterday, and DH skiied mostly by himself. This morning DIL is feeling worse so DH and I are in the condo with grandson, who is still being very ornery. Granddau is in ski school but we are sitting… DIL said we can leave her with GS but she is asleep and clearly unwell, so that’s a no. Oh and it’s DH’s birthday today! Are we having fun yet?

Oh my goodness, and, oh dear! Little vectors of illness, those grandbabies! Sorry to hear that your vacation is not going well, Jym626, and I hope it improves and that you get some fun time also.

We have just had a nice Christmas lunch with 11 of us; the three grandkids, DIL, DIL, DS, DD, DS’s in-laws, DH and me, and after some nice together time, DH and I got to wave goodbye and walk 18 feet back to our own house, and blissful peace and quiet! I am really liking living close by, yet with plenty of privacy.

Merry Christmas :christmas_tree: and Happy Hanukkah :menorah: to all who celebrate.

Congratulations, mominva! That is great news! I promise I won’t tell anyone.

Hope all of you and those with sick family members will be well soon. It’s no fun to be sick on vacation and during the holidays.

H and I had a lovely Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with S, D, SIL, GS, and GD. D and SIL host Christmas Eve and we host Christmas Day. We shared lots of fun and laughter. This afternoon we headed back to D and SIL’s for a very competitive backyard hockey game. I will be feeling the pain for a few days.

Thanks, everyone. On the bright side, despite my S checking and my phonecall to the rental shop where I am getting my equipment telling me the boots weren’t there, when I went over this afternoon to pick up granddau from ski school and take one run with her (to get in one run for the day, just like yesterday only this one at least was not the bunny slope) I checked one more time at the ski shop, and happened to look up on top of their lockers, and there, behind someone’s boot bag, were the ski boots!!! WHEW. In other good news, granddau had a fabulous day in ski school and the one run we took at the end of the day was fun to see what she has learned. Grandson continues to be a serious handful, and while they still hope to get him to try ski school tomorrow afternoon, I think he is not ready to handle it. I am still sick too, though not as bad as poor DIL. And there is a big winter storm coming……

Hopefully you were not at either of these ski resorts…

SIL’s sister and family are coming to stay with us for 4 days–and D1 will be working nights for all of those days. Since she’s given up her “sleep cave” (extra bedroom that has blackout curtains, extra soundproofing and is well away from the kids’ play areas) to her in-laws, she will be renting a motel room for all the nights they are here so she can get her sleep in order to be alert for her stressful ER physician job. Not even sure if she will be coming to house for dinner–though she will probably come home to put the kids to bed before heading in to work.

I think the sister is being entirely inconsiderate. Her parents live only 40 minutes away (30 minutes if the traffic is good) and have 2 guest rooms. But no, she wants to stay with us (and we have 2 sick kids) so her daughter can play with her cousins. (Her daughter is 6 years older than the twins and 8 years older than GS. I can’t imagine that her daughter will find them entertaining very long.) Or they could rent a hotel room–which is what they did last year when they visited us in California.

So, am I irritated with the sister before she even arrives? Um, yes. Yes, I am.

Could you tell SIL that unfortunately your D’s overnight work schedule doesn’t allow for you to accommodate overnight guests at this time?

I am NOT going to get involved in the dynamics of someone else’s family. SIL and his sister are not close, and his sister has dumped stuff on him before without considering the practicalities.

(Like announcing out of the blue 3 years ago that she wanted nothing to do with managing her dad’s and step-mom’s healthcare issues. That was SIL’s job even though he lived 3000 miles away and she lived 3 hours away. She hadn’t been doing any managing, but it was around then their dad had some serious health issues arise-- major aneurysm repair, hip replacement, heart stents. She simply decided she didn’t want to deal with any of it ever. End of discussion.)

Hurrah for safety. The gondola computers found the crack in the lift tower/structure and shut down the lift. And good job ski patrol for getting everyone down safely. My brother was a patroler for 30 years (including at Winter Park for 5 years) and this would have been his worst nightmare - he doesn’t like heights! He was the one who had to ski down black diamond slopes with the toboggan behind him because he was so strong, but repelling off a lift? No thank you! (but there were plenty of jobs for everyone to do for this rescue. I actually wondered how they could staff the rest of the resort when so many patrolers weredealing with this).

We went to IKEA store on Sunday for odds and ends, and DD had ordered for home delivery the loft bed kit. Delivered today. Very handy DD and DH assembled it with help from older two GKids (2 toddlers at daycare). DD said “with IKEA you read through the instructions one time and then totally follow their directions” - everything is pictorial - so DD had the bolts all lined up – DDs/DH are a good team with handy tasks. This is in the bedroom for the ‘littles’. The other kid bedroom has a bunk bed than DH had made for DDs when they asked for bunk beds.

This morning, DH baked something he is quite skilled at - caramel/cinnamon rolls (something he learned from his mom and his aunt). Think Cinnabon type. The older two grandkids were helpers. DH made at our large Thanksgiving gathering, and niece participated to ‘get the feel of the dough’ and saw it step by step again. DH and DD2 have experimented a bit with baking bread too (they are both engineers, so they are ‘methodical’.

GD is 4 today. We called this morning to wish her happy birthday & I told her we’d be seeing her this afternoon for cake. Without missing a beat, she said, “Make me a card, Grandma.” You bet I made her a card!!
