This morning GS asked that Grandma and Papa pick him from from daycare today. Hard to say no to that request .
Tomorrow he and D1 are coming up to our house to hang out and watch me coach my 1,000 career game as rec soccer coach.
We’ve also decided to alter our weekend patterns for the next few months. My SiL works every other weekend and his schedule is sort of crazy until the summer– if he supervising he has to be in by 6:45 and doesn’t get to leave until 6ish (it sort of depends when the last guests leave). Even non-supervising days are long (7:30-6ish) . Instead of going to our neighborhood Mexican place every Sunday as a whole crew, we will go on the weekends that he isn’t working.
Wow, @jmnva06, that is quite impressive. Thank you for coaching!
The moms and dads coaching and volunteering as team managers are giving the next generation a tremendous gift.
I took GS and GD to McDonald’s for a treat this afternoon on our way home. Someone ahead of us in the drive-thru line treated them to McFlurries. What a kind and generous human!
Wonderful when grandparents and parents can be involved in leading team sports, team activities, musical and other activities.
As parents, we have been involved - and I have assisted in both middle school track and children’s choir, along with band trip RN – only could do one of the 3 band trips to Disney for competition due to having aggressive cancer after the first trip. Was glad I had the first trip. My world ‘shrunk’ for the years of weakness and treatments - but was able to have a ‘sunset career’ starting right after DD1 graduated college and DD1 in her last two years, and worked until I was 65.
Waiting for the time to move to where the 5 grandchildren live - will time it after SIL establishes his career outside of FT Army in that city, and that city will be ‘home’. DD1 works FT (thankfully M - F in a managerial nursing job, well paid and with great benefits for a large VA hospital/center), and they welcome grandparent presence and help.
My brother runs a youth sports team organization so has coached kids for 40 years. It was fun watching kids I’d know for 20 plus years play through college (to bring this back to a CC focus). Now their kids are playing, and the parents I was friendly with are now the grandparents at every practice and game (to bring it back to a grandparent focus for this thread).
My parent volunteer job? I did clean up at a lot of fields (children and their parents are slobs and litterbugs!)
Happy news: we will be joining the Grandparent Club in the fall! The downside is that our grandchild will be 5,000 miles away on another continent…thank goodness for FaceTime.
I spent a lovely day with D1 & D2’s families for my birthday. We went to see the cherry blossom and D2 made lunch for all of us.
GD2 was very excited to see me. She wanted to walk with me at the park and wouldn’t let go of my hand. She is very sweet and cuddly.
GD1 got a last minute invitation to a birthday party, so she asked her parents if she could skip my birthday celebration.
On the plane now heading home after 5 days with GD in Charlotte, NC. H and I had GD for 4 hours Friday evening while D1 and SIL attended a welcomed drinks. Then we had GD for 8 hours yesterday while D1 and SIL attended a wedding and reception. GD is 6 months old and so cute. She took bottles of breast milk for me no problem and slept great for H and I. It was such a great weekend!
Expecting our first grandchild in late June – when did you first get to hold your grands?
As newborns. No, I lied. There was a May 2020 birth, so we didn’t see her for about the first month and then masked, of course. We had had the tDap with first grandchild 4 years before.
My six month old grandson was sniffly and snuffly and slightly feverish this week so I went up Wednesday afternoon and all day Thursday to help. S and DIL work from home so always available. On Wednesday afternoon, I diagnosed an ear infection left ear. They already had a dr’s appt. later that day and sure enough, ear infection left ear. This old grandma has been around that block a few times!
But anyway, I wallowed in babyness. Just love it. This is absolutely our last grandchild. Of 5. He’s a good baby but was not too awfully happy Wednesday. A couple of doses of antibiotic had kicked in a bit by Thursday. He’s fine today. But then his nearly 6 year old sister sprained her ankle at school so they had to fetch her. It ain’t easy raising kids. I tend to forget day in and day out details. All I know is that I was in a whirlwind state of being for so long, it’s a blur. (3 sons).
When she came home from the hospital, the day after she was born. D knew that we were being very careful in the weeks before she was born. We never had any limitations.
Spent the weekend with D and the grands. On Friday we met up in a park with some of GD’s preschool friends and their parents. Saturday was low key but it is always busy in that house. Today we took the kids to the zoo. It was fun but I’m exhausted.
I flew back today from spending the weekend with S’s family. His youngest went to preschool this morning wearing a K-Pop t-shirt, some random shorts with a satin dress up skirt over them & a tulle tie-on skirt thing worn as a cape. Also a string of pretend pearls and gold sparkle Crocs. She starts kindergarten in August with a dress code. It’s going to be an interesting adjustment for her.
When my fashion queen refused to wear the uniform with buttons on both the shirt (2 buttons on the polo) and skort (2 decorative buttons but the skort was a pull up with elastic waist), I told her to take it up with the principal - a nun! Never heard another word about it.
