The Great American Baking Show Holiday Edition

I still enjoyed it and will continue to watch. I like the judges and hosts are also fine. The recipes were interesting - the shallot tarte tatin looked delicious!

How was Ayesha Curry as host?

@socalemma Ayesha Curry is not the current host. She was in the past. I do like her but didn’t really like her much as the host of this particular show. Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) is the current host. She is fine.

Don’t forget it’s on tonight at 9pm.

Ruggelah is the theme. Funny, this was a theme of holiday chopped. Not one of the chefs had ever made it, and few had tasted it.

It just bugged me that they kept mispronouncing it as rugelah, not rugelach.

Just caught up. Can’t believe that there was zero discussion of rugelach dough being a cream cheese pastry.

I have been eating cannoli all my life (and high quality ones from good Italian bakeries) and had no idea that wine was an ingredient in the shells.

I watched the last two nights (four episodes) and am sure having a British judge to bake for made things a bit more difficult. When the British show had an American pie challenge one episode it was difficult to bear Paul’s judgements on what was best- his ideas are different than the Americans are. I disagree with him on the texture of gingerbread for example- being crisp does not sound as good as being softer. Likewise his aversion to the sweetness on that British show would affect his judgement on the American version.

And what- he never heard of Snickerdoodles?!

Our baking heritage comes from a lot of different European traditions and is different than the British. Many recipes evolved after they crossed the ocean- he should have been a lot more knowledgeable about our versions of good baking. They chose him for his name recognition and the British show connection.

Yes, but I watch cuz of Paul. I respect his opinions. I think Americans are heavier on sugar. Butter cream filling is terrific in French bakeries, and sweeter in others, as example.
