The Great American Novel

If you had to chose the great american novel, which one would you pick?

I’d say mark twain’s huckleberry finn, i just read it in english and it’s amazing!

The one in my mind, silly.

I sincerely hope that no one says anything about Hemingway.

^gasp you don’t have 1337 posts anymore

The old man and the sea =D

The Old Man and the Sea isn’t that bad. I liked it. But it’s really overrated. Hemingway is overrated. The Sun Also Rises is horrible.

Pet Sematary… definitely.

I havent read much, but I like the great gatsby

Oh goodness, oh The Great Gatsby. The American Dream, the brokenness of decadence…beautifully written.

I don’t know if that’s my vote but I reeeeally like it.

Catch 22 FTW

Ha, you beat me to it, Tritium.

I also loved the Great Gatsby, though. It might represent America better, seeing as Catch-22 isn’t strictly an American novel, if you know what I mean. It’s more universal in its observations.

Gone with the Wind

Ulysses, i dont know if it’s American though :(

^hahaha, it isn’t even in english

Well, I read it in English and it was amazing…so HA!

Great Gatsby, Scarlet Letter, Huck Finn

Ulysses is most definitely in English written by an Irish writer.

Generally, speaking as an English professor, Moby Dick is regarded as the great American novel.

The Great Gatsby and Huckleberry Finn are also top contenders.

I would include Toni Morrison’s Beloved. Won the Nobel Prize and is an amazing novel about a strictly American experience.

The Scarlet Letter was bleechh.
