The Harvard Waitlist Waiting Room 2014 Thread

Welcome back Qiz. Thanks for the update. So much has happened for the past 30 hours or so. Yes, mixed feelings. On the one hand, we are still hanging on, and on the other hand, the suspense is killing me. Good luck to everyone who’s still in the game.

gunther6456: You’ll have a great experience at Wash U. You’re right the family didn’t get much love from Harvard, but the good news is most have very good options.

qizixite: TG you’re back.

Ughughughugh I just want this to be OVER.

And. . . it’s been a crazy holiday. Yes, this thread is for Harvard, but I just need to explain what happened.

Yesterday I got a call (saw caller ID) from Princeton, but couldn’t answer because of the holiday. Got two more calls that day from them. I never expected a call from Princeton as their first wave was done; though I have no idea if it was a call notifying me I got in.

Today, got a letter in the mail from UMD. Couldn’t open it on the holiday, so I held it up to the light. For some reason (I have NO idea why) they said they’d received my request to cancel my application or whatever, and have gone ahead and canceled it all (I’ve already sent in my deposit and deferral form and gotten confirmation of my deferral). So at this point; I don’t have any possible options for college. Sucks.

Oh, and after the holiday I checked my messages and the message from P had a name, phone number, and asked me to call back (no info). Great.

I then check my e-mail to see if I heard from P, and I find out I’ve been rejected from Harvard (sorry it took me so long to get to that).

Hopefully P will work out, and if not, hopefully UMD can undo what they’ve done.

Good luck to the rest of you! It’s been great. Unlike many other posters, I think I’ll be following this thread for the next few weeks anyway; I can’t just leave this that easily.

Rejected. I received an email Wednesday night a little after 4 PM. Sorry for the late response, and congratulations to all those accepted. I am truly happy for you! And to my fellow rejectees - keep your chin up, because I know there are great things to come for all of us. In fact, I am almost relieved that I was rejected so I wouldn’t have to make a truly impossible decision. Princeton '14 :)

@iluve11alot - Receiving calls from Princeton is certainly a good sign. That must be so frusterating for you! Best of luck, and let us know how it works out.

MY question is with so many people still waiting and a relatively low number students who were taken off the waitlist in this first round, does it mean that the first wave was meant to cut down the numbers and then get to the nitty gritty for the june date?

iluv11alot, I really really hope Princeton comes through! Good luck!

jdog, to be entirely honest we do not know how many people were accepted in the first wave. IF CC is around 17.5% of the waitlist (124/708) then the first wave was around 30 people. But we shall see.

iluv11alot, that sounds like a nightmare. How can they rescind an SIR? What do you mean by deferral?

Fingers crossed for you that it all works out.

Just to confirm…if you haven’t heard, does that mean you’re on the extended waitlist?

@qizixite

where did you get the figure 708 for the whole waitlist? they never disclosed that information

i was matriculating to MIT before harvard called, i’m still sorry to read that you guys think i’m the “debated one” or whatever

good luck to everyone still out there! i wish you guys the absolute best!!

nyprepster, that was the number I determined after my entirely random analysis about a thousand posts back, so since I was conducting another entirely unscientific analysis, I decided that for my random number I might as well use 708.

sorry collegeahh28, no offense was intended! I just felt that the debate should be noted on the master list. I actually believe you.

no problem qizixite, i understand why people would question me…i’m really just posting to try to give as much info to all you CC users out there since i’ve been reading CC for awhile … anyways i’ll be signing off for now, once again good luck!

I got this weird email from college confidential. It says “This is a message from jbstewsaff at College Confidential,” but there’s no private message in my inbox. Anyway, the message says:

“My D is on the Extended Wait List. We were told by Admissions Office that only
12 students from Wait List were accepted yesterday. There are about 1OO on
Extended Wait List.”

Has “jbstewsaff” commented on this forum? Maybe I missed her? I’m curious to hear more…if there are only about 100 on the Extended Waitlist, it seems like CC has way too many “no responses.”

Oh, and on that same note, somebody said that admissions told them “most” people would hear Wednesday, so we assumed that they would accept ~50-60. 12 seems low, no?

noaflora, I got the same email and I sent a follow up PM and email. We will see what happens.

Has anyone else called Harvard and gotten a firm number?

Maybe by letting “most people” know, they meant including rejections?
And I’d like to know more about that email.

@EnoughAlready: I know your post was a long time ago, but I appreciate what you said

@reach4thestars45: I hope so, and thanks! I’ll be sure to post whatever happens

@qizixite: Thanks so much!

@HurtLocker: Thanks; it kind of is, though I’m pretty sure it will work out. Pardon my ignorance, but what’s an SIR? And I deferred my acceptance for a year (meaning I’ll be in the class of 2015) as I will be spending a year abroad next year. Many schools have special processes to go through to defer, but UMD really sees a lot of deferring. It’s kind of like putting yourself on a z-list I guess?

SIR is Statement of Intent to Register. It’s the thing you send into the college where you decide to matriculate.

Perhaps by “cancel your application” they simply mean “cancel your application for the class of 2014” since you are electing to defer to the class of 2015?

Just trying to think positively! Hope it gets worked out.
