The Harvard Waitlist Waiting Room 2014 Thread

Is it possible to stay on the waitlist until August?

I mean, say a student last minute switches, what does Harvard do if they have concluded their waitlist?

I have heard stories of people getting off waitlists a week before school starts and hence have switched schools last minute. While I am sure these are only stories and may not be true, has this ever happened, and generally how mad are the schools at the students for switching schools?

Is anyone still on the Harvard waitlist?

If Harvard does have any new openings for class of '14, they can pull from the z-list. The letter to a student who was z-listed at the beginning of the month mentioned that as a remote possibility: “In the unlikely event that a space in the Class of 2014 becomes available for you during the summer, we will be in touch with you immediately.”

I don’t know if there is anyone still left on the waitlist, but I’d think it’s very few, if any.

Judging by the sudden end of posts by all the extended WLers, I’d guess there is no super-extended list. As ^^you say, they can always ring up a Z-lister.

Like how does that happen? So if some person were to decide they didn’t want to go to Harvard last minute?

I wonder what they numbers were? Does anyone know if H has said (officially, or on the phone) how many they took?

Qizixite posted his last updated list June 10. Since then, there have been very few reported changes (4 acceptances , one rejection). The list below reflects those changes, but is otherwise built entirely on his work.

162 people so far; 142 for sure–20 unknown
16 Accepted; 18 in Limbo (not including 20 unknown); 108 Rejected;
Of the 18 in limbo, most probably received word at the beginning of July, if not sooner.

Last Year:
16 reported being accepted by 05-26-2009, post #1053. Everyone who was accepted from the thread heard on the 19th, 20th, and 21st which was a Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This was probably the first wave.

Next wave seemed to happen on the 12th of June with about 6-10 more students from the thread accepted from the 14th to the 29th of June.

In last year’s thread the Z-list acceptances were scattered and seemingly random (although probably based on hooks which are impossible to confirm).

This Year:
First wave reported on May 21st between 4 and 9 PM. Acceptances AND rejections were sent out.

Second wave reported on Friday June 4th. Only acceptances were released. Rejections were sent out on Tuesday June 8th.

Third Wave: Acceptances and rejections were released around June 30/July 1 to most, possibly all, remaining members of the waitlist.

Do the other ivies have a z-list?

The Z-list appears to be unique to Harvard. Princeton has created its Bridge Year program to encourage gap years, but it’s voluntary. Yale allows students to take a gap year, but doesn’t do anything in particular to encourage it.

Harvard’s Z-list has generated a surprising amount of controversy for a program that admits 30-50 students a year, with critics charging it’s a back door for underqualified offspring of big donors. Harvard denies this, and there are reports indicating that the program also brings in some very talented non-legacy, non-donor kids.

To me the z-list is a clever escape valve – a way for admissions at the very end of the process to squeeze out offers to a small number of applicants that they hate to lose (or whose parents they hate to offend).
