It seems like 1/3 of the time I eat at the Hoch (and trust me, I try to avoid it as much as possible), I get food poisoning. I’ve heard this is true for others as well.

I’m quite sick of it. We pay thousands of dollars for food per year and are given this? I mean seriously, how can the Hoch’s food be seen as acceptable when compared to the other 5C dining halls’ food? What actions can we take to get the Hoch to make better food or get a better service contract? And how many others share my sentiment about the Hoch?

Hmm. My son has been raving about how good Hoch’s food is. Perhaps, as he said, he is biased by the fact that he isn’t having to cook his own. Nonetheless, at least one of the frosh finds it to be of great quantity and good quality.

The Hoch seems fine for me. And I have often heard many people from the other colleges (Scrippsies, in particular) prefer its food to their own dining hall. I actually agree with you that most of the time the other dining halls have better food, but the Hoch isn’t nearly as bad as you are making it out to be.

That’s really weird then. Maybe people either just hate it or are ok with it because a lot of people I know say they think it’s absolutely terrible. Other people have also told me that they get food poisoning too from the hoch.

I think the dining hall food is just fine – I would say it is definitely of the same quality as the other dining halls on the 5C’s. My only complaint is the lack of variety at times (Steak Night). But getting food poisoning? If you are getting sick this often, maybe you should check out the possibility that it is some other health problem.

Could it be a food allergy of some kind? I cant think of anything else that would cause such a thing. what kind of stuff do u usually eat?

ive eaten at the hoch pretty much every day since ive gotten here and ive had no stomach problems whatsoever. I will say I like the clean-feel of scripps dining a little bit better, but when it comes to burrito days i make a smexy taco salad that makes up for it.

My D – another freshman – has been telling me the food is good. I sent the post above to her, and she reiterated that she has had no problems with the food, and added that the people who work in the dining hall are nice and accommodating (this comment, I think, triggered by a friend who has severe food allergies and has found the dining hall staff to be concerned and helpful in making sure he doesn’t accidentally eat something he is allergic to).

I’ve eaten quite a large diversity of food and never gotten food poisoning before.

I should also note that last year I thought the Hoch was great at first. Then slowly over time I started to hate it (there seriously is no diversity in the food they have at all). Many other sophomores seemed to have gone through the same thing.

I used to eat the Mexican food, then I stopped that pretty quickly. Then I just ate the asian main course (especially at dinner). After the worst vomiting of my life I can’t even eat the asian food there anymore. I’m pretty sure that was due to the Hoch since it came on literally an hour after I ate and got progressively worse until I stayed up all night puking. Then the next day I was absolutely fine and there were never any other symptoms. I get a mild of version of this a lot of times from the Hoch but I don’t actually puke. I’ve NEVER gotten this from any other place in my life other than the Hoch.

The asian food is pretty ridiculous. It’s like they throw random vegetables and meat together, add some sauce, and call it “Thai __” , “Vietnamese ”, etc when I can’t honestly believe they are legitimate recipes.

well, i’d just like to say that that basically is how us asian people cook. i mean, my mom doesn’t give names to the dishes besides the name of the vegetables (in chinese), but she still throws in random stuff, like cabbage one day, and broccoli the next, either pork or chicken, stir fries it, throws in some MSG, and voila! dinner!

Im not a big fan of the hoch dinners myself, but its pretty good from time to time. Hell, they had corned beef and steamed cabbage on the first day. All the 5C dining halls post the dinner menus, so if you dont like the Hoch just walk to CMC/Pitzer/Pomona/Scripps.

Dont know of many people that have gotten food poisoning from the hoch, or at least with any consistency.

I do go to other dining halls 75% of the time. It’s just really frustrating when I’m always faced with the choice of “eat bad food” vs. “get food by myself and not see any friends.”

usually if I dont feel like going to the hoch, i walk into the lounge and ask 'anybody up for _____?" and then usually a sizable number of ppl agree, who are just normally not up for the xtra distance either. Getting sick of the hoch is bonding experience that unites us all. ^^

By senior year, I was eating at Hoch as often as I was eating at Scripps, and it’s the best breakfast, bar none. Real eggs, blueberry waffles, smoothies, and fresh squeezed (as in…here’s a bucket of oranges and a juicer, so go at it) orange juice. Man. Really, though. I’d agree with the lack of diversity, but I always enjoyed the food and was never sick from it (or any other food in Claremont). Sounds like very bad luck or, as others have suggested, another issue.
