I have an ICD (pacemaker/defibrillator) and I did not know this! WIll have to ask the device nurse about it.
A friend of mine has been in a home for a long time which has a septic system. It turns out the prior homeowner had planted trees in the backyard, and now these trees have interfered with their septic lines! They have to do tree removal and have their back yard all dug up to re-establish field lines for the septic system. Wow.
I think trees interfering with septic lines is fairly common. We just had a wastewater backup in our basement earlier this year because of tree roots in our septic line.
Yes, never plant trees around the lines. Make sure you have a diagram of your tank and lines relative to the house with distance measurements. I see people do it all the time and I’d never buy a house with a septic without knowing where everything was buried and I prefer septic over sewer. And your county environmental health department should have a copy of your septic on file.
We generally know where our field lines are (and know where our septic tank is) and we have not planted trees. We built our home.
I posted as a caveat to anyone who is buying a home where there is a septic system and knowing where the field lines are – and very much questioning trees planted since the septic system/field lines were done.
I know the county determined where the septic tank was to be installed - because it was higher on the property (and closer to the house), we had to have more rows of block foundation (we have a crawl space) - but we have a nicer crawl space than builder had planned (and glad we have a more generous crawl space). We have some sloping on our back yard (and part of the reason for the builder’s idea of where to put the septic tank). But there is an easement not far from that edge of the property, and I imagine the county/city wanted to have the septic tank much further from there.
I am slowly making my way through some “home improvement” tasks in the new year. This week we bought a new garage motion dusk-to-dawn light and a new kitchen faucet. H will try to install the light and I’ll find a handyman to do the faucet.
I am also doing a little guest bedroom(s) refresh. On the list of that is 2 new ceiling fans needed. As is the case with so many home items out there, I dislike most of what the big box stores have. Yet I don’t want to pay oodles of $ for something from a specialty store - at least not off the bat.
Have any recommendations for good looking (single light, standard size, probably light to medium “wood” color, modern as in doesn’t look like it’s from the 80’s but not uber modern) ceiling fans with that single light? Or places you have bought from and been happy with selection?
Anyone try one of the fandeliers???
I really like the look of Minka ceiling fans. We installed a giant one that has a light fixture in our bedroom but my husband made sure to disable the lights. Ours looks like this but has 5 blades.
Not sure why it says “site maintenance” but it shows the thing. ![]()
ETA: here is ours. The size of the room dictates the fan size. Our room is huge, hence the mega fan:
The “wood” is lighter than it appears in the photo. The motor is absolutely silent!
OMG I totally looked at that first one when we were purchasing some fans a couple of years ago - maybe you recommended them then! I totally forgot about the Minka’s - thanks, will put them on my list.
Here is one in a maple finish!
Again, please ignore the “site maintenance” - the link shows the thing.
ETA: the reason we became fans of Minka (pun intended
) is that we once stayed at a Four Seasons in Hawaii and were impressed with the ceiling fan in our room. It was a Minka. Our rationale was if a posh hotel installed them, they must be pretty good. ![]()
Big fan of Minka here, too. We discovered them years ago in our old house and have kept to that brand ever since, no lights though.
Pun intended?
Yeah, like @BunsenBurner punned upthread.
Here’s another fan we like, 7 feet in diameter, which we purchased from an aptly named company, bigassfans.com.
Our ceiling fans are also Minka. Our kitchen one looks like this (the stainless or nickel or whatever) and our bedroom one is very similar but is white.
Our kid’s rooms all have this fan
Minka fans here as well- I’m pretty sure I read about them on cc. I like the look and they work well, quiet. Have the same white ones in all the ( grown and out of the house) kids’ rooms.
Minka it is when it comes time to buy later this spring. Like a lot of furniture, I find most ceiling fans at “ordinary” stores butt ugly!!! But we are a family who likes their ceiling fans and at least for one of the bedrooms, a light is helpful to have with the fan.
Thank you! ![]()
We are finally making progress on the bathroom renovation project… I have 2 contractors coming out to give us some estimates. Stay tuned!
Def want to hear how it goes. We have one coming out this week too.
