This thread me me remember we left a time capsule in our bath walls in 1998, but I can’t remember what we put into it.
In the “new” 1900 house, I’m completely overwhelmed. We’ve had it a week, cleaned a day, ripped out the 50 year old disgusting carpet and vinyl flooring and pulled a lot of staples, and powerwashed the big porches. I think half of the floor can be sanded and refinished, but the back half has a lot of old termite damage and the 16x32 area has 2 sets of butt joints, where I assume walls were. Sort of bummed, because it’s random width pine that is original and very cool. Those must have been tiny rooms!
I’m stripping the 10" baseboard next so I can see some progress. We didn’t want contractors lined up until it finally closed, so now I’m going to be waiting…and waiting…
That’s great. I found a New York Times Book Review from 1941 when we remodeled our kitchen. I put it back along with at 2104 copy of the book review. But I like the note.
i found written on a stud of a house of a client some notes about how expensive everything was. It was an old addition to an even older house.
Lol, we discovered that someone scribbled in pencil “Went to get more bolts. Be back soon” on the concrete wall in the utility room in the basement.
No capsules yet, but we found original blueprints from when the house was built. 1980.
Interesting flip not too far from me:

New and improved: https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/4-Eel-River-Rd_East-Falmouth_MA_02536_M44638-94668
It was bought from the bank at $305K last June, listed at $740K this June, reduced to $700K in July.
New kitchen, baths, windows, and floors. Seems like the biggest difference is a ton of white paint to brighten it up.

What is up with this bathroom, this is right up there with the Angry Bathroom in my house in ugly points: https://images.estately.net/94_21711671_10_1493734386.jpg
The other bathrooms are pretty awful too. And some of that wallpaper… wow.
It’s not wildly overpriced for the neighborhood, considering it’s condition, but it is on a corner of a busy road. $400K more than it was bought for seems to leave plenty of room for profit.
The spent a pretty penny on the kitchen and baths, but it does look like mostly paint for the rest. That plaid wallpaper with the grim colored tiles is pretty sad. But I always kind of liked the charm of all that paneling.
OMG that plaid bathroom. My eyes hurt form all those squares!
Flipping, the risky side.
I posted about this flip somewhere last year (search is broken, can’t find it >:P ). Bought for $247K, brought to market at $725K, dropped to $645K, when the listing was removed.
Listed again this year at $499K, and just dropped to $494K. So they’ve come down in price by over 30% and have had to pay the carrying costs for over 1.5 years. Dang…

Greed kills?
I remember that whale tail flip. Terrible kitchen.
We are moving forward with a kitchen cabinet refacing project. The prior owner painted the beautiful cherry doors (sigh!), and it looks like the paint crew did a shoddy job and did not remove varnish/prime the wood. So now the doors are ruined. Stripping the paint and restraining or repainting the wood would cost more than new doors! I can’t stand looking at the peeling paint, so… off we go, Cherry kitchen, here we come!
OMG our reno is taking forever! Our contractor initially told us 8-10 weeks. We are on week 8 and the drywall isn’t even up. It was a mistake to try to live through this reno. I’m desperate to get a kitchen back! Being pushed, he’s now saying 6 more weeks but it seems like it will be a lot longer.
The weather is probably very good for fishing… who wants to mess with drywall when the lake is calling? Eye roll. Sorry to hear that your reno is taking forever.
@notrichenough really wonderful transformation! Go big or go home!
We are in ‘baby steps’ with things around our home. I have a few projects waiting for me to have time and the saved $$.
We found an old pencilled note behind a bathroom cabinet, complaining the job was worth more than they were getting paid.
Going on 10+ weeks on the house exterior painting. Did I mention before that this isn’t the freaking Biltmore? Some of the delay has been weather, some is while the crew runs off to another job. Most is because they didn’t realize how hard it would be to strip down to the shakes (and under-quoted on price, imo.) But what’s done is great. 4 sides stripped, 2 are primed. Now the soffits and two dormers to finish. I hate not having my backyard.
Oh, and the basement is cleared, what a delight. Asbestos abatement around the steam pipes, a new flue liner and new boiler/water heater to come. This month, I hope. (Gas line is in, to the foundation.)
Then I’m going to make some landscape changes in the backyard (a week of DIY.) Then done for the year. Someone else can come wash the windows.
And yes, the S. Dennis redo is lovely, NRE.
Pressure-washed the garage and then almost immediately began painting! Because it was 90 degrees, and the Hardi was dry in no time!
Who wants to help me with exterior design ideas? Our home (in CT) was hit by a major hailstorm in May. Insurance is covering a new roof, siding, garage doors, window screens, pool liner (already done), etc. Pic of the house is in my avatar.
In about a week and half the new roof will go on, we’re going with GAF Timberline HD in Charcoal. Thinking of using Mastic"Scottish Thistle" for the siding. A gray-green color. Black shutters and a deep red door. Thoughts? I’m seriously color challenged. Some neighbors have done nice deep colors, deep blue, deep gray, and it looks great also. (EVERY home in the neighborhood was damaged - so we’re all remodeling) You can see from the pic, we have little tree coverage and sit on top of a hill. So, fading is a concern, although I understand there are siding choices to limit this risk.
I’ve been playing around with the idea of putting faux stone on the wall behind the front porch but can’t find any design ideas on pinterest. Am I crazy to think about this? Also I’m considering having a new front door installed as part of the project.
Thoughts? Ideas? Things I might not have thought about? H is no help at all :-S
Vinyl? Why not Hardi? That way, you would have a lot more color choices, and if you get tired of the color, a bucket of paint will solve the problem.
That said, if you like the color, go with it. I would not personally use black anywhere on the house. I would go with a lighter grey for siding, white trim, deep cherry colored shutters, and a wood stained door with a fancy glass insert). Wood stained - in a covered porch should be ok.
Not familiar with Hardi, but we are going with vinyl since the insurance is “replacing in kind” (ie, vinyl) and not paying for upgrades. Love the idea of the light grey with deep cherry…but…so did the folks across the street …
Ahh… got it. That is a bummer that you are limited in your siding color choices, and the neighbors already got the dibs on light grey. How about beige siding and navy blue shutters? I googled it, and there are some nice pictures. Unfortunately, all Pinterest so can’t be linked on cc.
We are almost done with the garage painting… looking good.
Anyone have thoughts on using faux stone (like ledgestone) on the back of the porch? Full height? Wainscot hight? None at all? I can’t seem to find pics of what’s in my head on Google/pinterest, and that always worries me…
