Can you post a link to the sink you mentioned above, @mathmom ? No pics showing.
I wish I could! Can’t find it again. It was a bit like this one http://www.archiexpo.com/prod/amos-design/product-149974-1683395.html exept that the sinks were on different levels so that water from the top faucet just waterfalled into the lower sink with the drain. It looked both cool and stupid. No real counter space.
Thanks! A public bathroom sink.
If the house has 5 bedrooms (or 4), the target buyer in the future will be a large family. They will want double sinks in the hall bath so that 2 kids can use the bathroom at the same time. Even better if you can separate the shower and/or toilet so 3 can use it at the same time
Dang, coralbrook, another thing my old house doesn’t have: a master bath. The hall bath is definitely a single.
“Just saw the size of Emily’s vanity… 54" is a tiny vanity. Yikes. We have about double that in MB. I would not put 2 sinks in a 54" vanity.”
I just measured it, and my bad, it 66” long. But my bathroom is small (8”x4 1/2 except where tub is) so I wouidn’t have room for the toilet if I put anything bigger in. The vanity was also custom so it’s not as wide as most vanities. I didn’t want it butting up to the door frame. Across from the vanity I also stole 10 inches from closet in guest bedroom, to open up the space a little. I had custom shelves built into that space.
Not only do I hate double sinks, I hate hate hate toilets in separate closet. Makes me feel like I am inside a port-o-potty.
Honeybucket? Heavens no.
It probably depends on how big of a space one can work with. Ours is more like a throne room!
A privacy enclave with its own ventilation fan. Makes our master bathroom much more useful.
I’ve been in big ones. Still feels like I’m in a port-o-potty (and I’ve been in really “nice” port-o-potties, that are air conditioned, with several potty rooms and with vanity & sink.)
I am glad you are happy with your bath design. I am happy with ours. Having a separate water closet in MB was one of our non-negotiable requirements for a house. Just saying… the vast majority of folks who are OK with a non-enclosed toilet are OK with an enclosed one, but not vice versa (per our realtor). Pony walls or whatever they are called are a joke. What are they supposed to accomplish?
@mathmom I ordered the book and excited to read up!
Our master is plumbed for double sink, but our cabinetry is for one sink and a sit down vanity area. We will get cabinetry made for double sink, with new counter and new sinks once we start our home updating for selling in a few years. Looking at what new homes in our area have - a special shower nozzle and these gliding shower doors.
I guess we can put in a pocket door in the doorway where our toilet is if that is a big deal - but I suspect anyone who wants the privacy can figure that one out.
@SOSConcern - folks who desire it will definitely figure out how to complete the enclosure. Although if you are already doing a remodel with the sale in mind, it might make sense to make your bath more appealing to a wider circle of potential buyers.
Drywall is installed! They put up blueboard, because we are having the walls plastered:

We can finally get a good idea of how the space will flow, and we are really happy at how it is coming together.
Siding on the front is finished. The porch will eventually be decked with dark brown trex-like planks:

Any suggestions for front door color? A nice maroon is in the lead at the moment.
I’m still thinking about the discussion about partial faux stone walls on the exterior. Several pictures of what doesn’t look good. Anyone have pictures of ones done well?
We’re updating the front facade and we are considering a skirt about1/3 of the way up of what looks like strips of gray stone (can’t pull up the name of it at the moment). I like very contemporary but our exterior isn’t all that contemporary so we’re trying to find that sweet spot where we’re working with the house but still love all the elements. And I know there are those who are not fans of gray. Dh and I happen to love gray. Lots of gray, white and blue in our home.
“Pony walls or whatever they are called are a joke. What are they supposed to accomplish? “
I don’t like those either.
Tell your realtor that you know someone who hates a separate potty room. It would be a deal breaker for me, unless bathroom needed a total renovation, in which case it would be gone.
Then there are those of us whose preference for privacy is such that we put two spacious water closets in our master bathroom, each with a high operable window and exhaust fan. We wouldn’t consider a house without a water closet in the master bathroom, and prefer that hall bathrooms are compartmented so that one child could be brushing his teeth or washing his face while another was taking a shower.
Emily, you are in a teeny minority here.
I love my mister dearly, but some things are best done in private.
NRE - wow, cool progress! I love your maroon paint idea. I highly recommend Benjamin Moore Aura Gand Entrance paints for doors. They appy like a dream. Tuscan Chianti or Impressionist Ruby are two colors that can go well with your siding.
Finished painting the garage. Tomorrow is QC/QA inspection.
B-)
Some of you have the luxury of somewhat custom homes. We’re stuck with someone else’s notions, 100+ years ago. I We’ve got a single bathroom on the 2nd fl, to serve four bedrooms. The overflow can brush their teeth in private on the 3rd fl or down in the first floor lav. I’ll bet this chat could cover closet sizes, as well. Or how many car spaces in the garage.
In all the years here and raising two girls, few conflicts.
Our MBA is 7x9. Previous owners installed a pony wall. It will come out if we ever get so far as to renovate. Closets: we have three single closets in three different parts of our MBR. It’s two small rooms with the wall knocked out by the previous owners. We have windows at every corner where we potentially could expand a closet, and do not want to spend the $$$ to reconfigure windows, and resulting siding, etc. Making a walk-in would probably be over improving for the neighborhood – the amount we could sink into the house really needs to go to the MBA and kitchen…
@CountingDown - getting rid of a window is surprisingly not that expensive. If your siding is cedar, it will be an easy patch. Putting a window in where there is none, OTOH, is a lot more $$.
Some colors on the red spectrum - some would be great for doors.
