The Home Improvement Thread

I like that much more than the house with all the MCM furniture posted awhile ago.

That beach house is ok, but noting special, imo. It’s all about the location, but maybe they got carried away because of the location and went overboard on price.

Oh I agree, that beach house is something of a “lipstick on a pig” scenario. Mismatched window styles, weird architectural flourishes like the raised living room and bedroom ceilings or 4 layers of crown molding on the first floor or the odd portico on the front with the fake balcony, the bathroom layouts make no sense, that kitchen is just a hot mess from one end to the other, etc.

It’s all about the location, which is pretty great.

What caught my eye is the fact that the new price is more than $2mil more than they paid for it. There’s no way they put anywhere close to that into the place, so there will be some serious profit if it goes anywhere close to that.

Poking around Zillow, found this classic example of a McMansion! Classic. 6 beds, 7 baths (Mr. B made a comment about that but it is not CC-compliant ) - 6,000+ sft. Bleh. Bleh. Bleh.

The gables had babies!

I think that house racks up a solid 10 on the McMansion scale:

3+ facade surface materials
No respect for context or site
Roofline soup
3 or more window styles
Out of scale architectural details
Peel n’ Stick Architectural details
Patchwork masonry
House is out of scale

Lol NRE. That area was built out in the fifties and sixties. Lots of MCM houses, some architect-designed, are being bulldozed and replaced by these kinds of “perfect 10s” that apparently appeal to the Chinese buyer.

I feel sorry for the houses on either side, which are now completely overwhelmed and encroached on by this giant house. Aren’t there any setback or lot coverage rules up there?

Not really… I have seen these monstrosities built like 15 feet apart! The neighbors capitulate and sell to the builder, so that starts a domino effect of new monstruction (not a typo - a hybrid of construction and monstrosity  ).

Looks like the little house to the right will be a goner soon… and it looks like there is less than 20 feet between the two!

McMansion Hell is one of my all time fav sites.

Got kitchen measured and put a deposit down on new cabinet doors. The guy who came out said house paint (stuff recommended for millwork) should never be used for cabinets. There is a special paint that like epoxy comes in two parts which when mixed should be applied within 24 hours. That is what cabinet pros use… it is bomb proof, so a typical homeowner’s paint job ain’t gonna last.

A friend used to take cabinets to an auto body shop to be repainted.

I can see why. Probably cheaper than at a cabinet refinisher, too!

Is this thread a good place to ask for info from those who have recently replaced their toilets? If not, happy to start a separate thread. If it works, I am looking to replace 3 toilets with elongated bowl (2 comfort height ones) with a powerful, somewhat “quiet” flush. Local plumber stocks Gerber (mentioned the Avalanche and the Viper); recently added an American Standard to a renovated bathroom and have been happy with the model used. We won’t be here forever, so a mid priced one should work. Thanks for weighing in. Also, we will be updating one of the baths we need to replace the toilet in with new tile flooring in the next year. Is it a bad idea to replace the toilet in advance of that? Of course, we would want to remove and re-set it after the floor is done. TIA.

Toto Aquia one piece is what we got for our MB, and I am thinking about using the same toilet in the other baths that need updating.

Its ceramic is treated with something that makes it easier to clean. The dual flush is quiet (does not wake me at night if Mr. has to pay a visit to the Toto), and the small flush is powerful enough to do the job. Never had to flush it twice.

Google Terry Love’s toilet reviews and forum - lots of good info. We actually bought the Toto from him.

No, it’s a fine idea, as long as the new tile will go with the color of the new toilet. If you think you might want a different colored toilet, then it would be better to wait.

Can’t really speak to individual makes and models as to what it good or not.

Our kitchen cabinets were delivered this morning! We hope that they will start hanging them tomorrow. I’m beyond excited!

We remodeled both our bathrooms last year and put in this toilet. Extremely pleased with it. Very, very quiet and love the dual flush (I also use the small flush all the time but cannot say the same for my H even though I tell him it’s not necessary.)

We did not pay the retail price as it was purchased through our contractor…

I also like how sleek it is.

We have a 114 year old home and went with this toilet:

Also didn’t pay anywhere near the retail price.

The model is called Kathryn? IMO, there should be a law prohibiting the use of human names for toilets.
