The Home Improvement Thread

The painting job is DONE!!! Bring out the champagne! All I need to do now is to finish staining the window trim around the living room windows. And we need to add some sort of a gutter system on the glass cover above the deck entrance so the runoff would not keep damaging the deck post. Whoever designed the place was not the sharpest tool in the shed… so if you are doing remodel in WA, I can tell you who NOT to hire (based on what the co. did for the prior owner of the house).

@Consolation, yeah, it is tough ro remodel really old houses. That is a bummer that you can’t find a match for your tub hardware… Have you looked on Amazon and Build?

We could replace the tub hardware with something like this for less than replacing the faucet with brass, and all of the knobs on the vanity, and trying to find light fixtures that suit…

BTW, regarding the light fixtures, the ceiling is high.

Is you tub hardware in good shape? I would hate to mess with something that is in perfect working condition that has been in its place for ages. In our experience, if you start messing with such old stuff, things can go wrong… But if it is old and on its last legs, I would be all for replacement. We in fact replaced some very solid old brass door hardware because the old, grainy oak- veneered doors themselves were replaced, and the hardware would have looked out of place on the new doors. I like chrome fixtures in bathroom. IMO, they are the easiest to keep clean and to replace with matching pieces when needed.

Well, we actually installed the current hardware almost 25 years ago. I don’t remember exactly what was there before, but I didn’t like it. I may have been one of the jury-rigged looking setups with a suspended curtain ring that go over free-standing tubs.

We actually do have a problem with an occasional leak. But I have no plans to mess with it now.

What do you think of these sconces with the faucet et al?

They are less plain that most of the others I’m considering, but I like them.

I LOVE them @Consolation! Wonderful vintage feel that goes well with your faucet.

Very nice! Can you hang them upside down so they would not collect dead insects inside? Like these?

The description says they can be hung either up or down.

I like them very much.

They are beautiful. I have something similar, hung as shown. Never a dead bug in 20 years. It’s dust that collects.

In the bathroom, hanging them up or down depends on the light you want on your face, eg, for makeup. A lot of the down ones are hung higher. Then you might deal with shadows on your face.

Our painter is saying he can’t match our dining room paint color. He took a chip but came back with something totally different. Is it unreasonable to assume a professional painter should be able to match an existing paint color? Couldn’t he bring a color wheel into the house to make the match? I’m at the end of my rope with this reno. Nothing is going right :frowning:

Take the chip to BM and SW yourself and ask them if the paint sheen and color can be matched.

Thanks. I’m just up to my eyeballs with an family emergency and was hoping the painter could figure out the match :frowning:

What a pain. Sorry to hear that you have to deal with a family issue and inept contractors!

Paint color matching depends on the size and condition of the chip and the diligence of whoever is operating the machine to run it correctly. A perfect match is not always possible, either.

That said, the painter should have been able to tell if the paint was “something totally different”. They usually (IME anywhay) put a little bit on the lid and use to blow dryer to dry it, so you can tell before you leave the store what it looks like and if it matches the chip.

A homeowner and certainly a professional painter should have no difficulty matching a paint chip. The paint stores, Home Depot, and Lowe’s all have computers that do this, and can match virtually anything, new, old, faded, anything.

The painter messed up.

It sound like the painter ordered a large batch without testing a small sample first and is now making excuses so he is not stuck with $$ of paint he cannot use.

I am getting irritated with our kitchen contractors! It has been only two days, but I am on the verge of complaining to their manager. I had to stay home this morning, and for the two hours they have spent here all they did was to put up a sheet of plastic. The rest was non-stop chat about cars and more cars. Yikes if this is going to continue on. I can only imagine what is happening when we are not around.

Maybe mofsenior1, when I was moving furniture around in guest room, it was clear the accent wall, would need to be repainted. The color in the paint can looked awful. I ended up just repainting the wall.
