The Home Improvement Thread

I’m now fighting with my husband because I like the “wrong color” that is currently up on the wall and don’t want to risk “fixing it” and hating it. I’m going to go to Benjamin Moore to get swatches tomorrow though and see if we can get it closer. Another sub said it will never look the same because of the lighting being different in the kitchen (way more windows in the kitchen) which is also probably true.

Our kitchen designer messed up the bases for our bathroom towers too and is now MIA. Our contractor fashioned a fix that works but isn’t great, nor what was designed. The contractor is working with the designer’s partner but I doubt we’ll have any better resolution. At least our shower is finally getting installed tomorrow and the backsplash is going up in the kitchen…Baby steps!

The crazy thing is we custom built our last house and had very minor issues and loved the process. This time I’m ready to pull my hair out.

I saw this one in a local lighting store today. The picture doesn’t really do it justice: you really don’t see that obstrusive light bulb… The quality is higher and the glass is gorgeous. It is also available with a really pretty fluted shade. And the local store will sell it for significantly less than the online vendors: $114 instead of $151.

Very nice light, @Consolation! Are you thinking about getting matching the ceiling lights?

@momofsenior1 - how frustrating!! We lucked out with the majority of our contractors, all but two did everything on time and right the first time around. Now one can see why we like DIY projects… nobody to blame but ourselves, and no contractors to babysit!

I will say, we have a ton of natural light in our home and no wall looks the same color as the wall next to it, there are west facing walls that I used to think were painted the light ceiling color, nope just the washout effect of the light. Good luck with your issue!

So true, @somemom. Most of our interior walls are covered in the same paint, but the light and shadows play tricks with it to the extent that it appears we have 3 or 4 different colors.

I appreciate all the feedback on the paint color! The painters’ mix is close but is missing all the blue undertones which is what I love. I’m going to get a color wheel today and samples and make sure I get it right. I like the color of the dining room over by the windows ; )

It is so frustrating to be at the mercy of other people that way. An hour here, a day there doesn’t mean much to them. But for you it is another matter altogether. Especially if you are living in the project or have a job that requires your presence elsewhere!

@BunsenBurner , no, I don’t really want a pendant in the bathroom. I’d prefer a semi-flush mount of the type that has an etched glass dish. In fact I have a dish that would be perfect, which came from the fixture in our LR that I replaced with a Waterford chandelier my mother gave me. The dish is nice, the stuff above it was ugly, or I would just reuse the whole thing. I’m wondering if it is possible to just buy–in chrome-- the basic hardware portion that attaches to the ceiling and holds the bulbs, and use my own dish. It is the kind that has a hole in the middle that attaches with a fob or nut or whatever it’s called, so the assembly would have to have a shortish rod. I’ve started looking around, but I don’t really know what to call it.

@momofsenior1 - I don’t think using a color wheel is the answer. I’d recommend scraping off a chip of the old paint that you’d like and taking it, together with the can of imperfect paint, back to the paint store, and asking them to add blue, or whatever it takes, to make it match. They know how to do this.

The colors on the color wheel will look a little different when they become actual, paint on the wall.

What @sherpa said! Never in my experience the color on the little paper paint “chip” matched the real paint on the wall, even for the exact same paint under the same light conditions.

The samples on paper are usually semi gloss, one. Pita.
And ime, paints shift color a bit as they dry more, over weeks. So when you touch up, it can look a bit different at first. I personally think the goal is to like the 2nd colle as much as you like the 1st. Then you dont mind a slight off mstch.

I’ve got the same color in the DR, pantry (more light) and lav (not much natural light.) They don’t truly look the same. But what trumps is that I like the look.

Sure your bluish tone in the paint isn’t a reflection of the natural light on the surface? I have the same white paint all over my house (lots of natural light) and objectively it looks like I have paint ranging from yellow, blue to gray tones.

My problem is 100% the lighting. The colors change from grey to blue between the kitchen and dining room. We’re going to get four new samples and paint larger sections on the wall and figure out what we like best  I want to compensate for that though so my kitchen looks bluer. How do people post pictures? I’d love to show you the current color (that I want to keep) and get feedback.

You can’t embed them directly, you have to upload them somewhere accessible on the internet and then post a link.

I use flickr, you can get a free account at ■■■■■■■■■■ .

The best way to post pictures is by linking to a Flickr album which is allowed by CC TOS. I am afraid the photos will not do the color any justice…

I’m struggling to create the flickr account (it tells me it’s sending me the access code but it isn’t) but if the color isn’t going to come out anyway, no point. We’re just going to need to trial and error it until it’s “right”.

Yep, that’s what you need to do if the computer matching doesn’t get it right.

The kitchen guys took all the doors away, sanded the boxes, and puttied the rough spots. More sanding tomorrow I guess. My avatars are royally pissed - they get locked up in the laundry room for the entire day.

The kitchen guys are like gnomes. They show up when we are not there and do something then disappear. Today, it looks like they sanded the boxes once more and applied a different type of putty on the spots that were still uneven. Guess I will not see cherry veneers until later next week! Yeah, you heard me right. We are ripping out painted doors and refacing them with stained wood! Just the way I like my kitchens. B-)

Cherry is beautiful.
