The important COUNTDOWN

Does anyone else get crap from white kids about being Asian? Apparently, any and all of my accomplishments were due to my genetic makeup as opposed to any hard work or dedication. One kid actually had the nerve to tell me that they proved that Asians in general are good at memorizing but can’t synthesize information for crap. And, his response for any accomplishment of mine (no matter how big or small) is ‘because I’m Asian’. I normally don’t get annoyed when people make racial comments, but it really ticks me off… I need to tell him to stop sitting on his butt and pointing fingers at others for all of HIS shortcomings and lack of accomplishments. What a jerk :(

yeah, me too

yes, he’s a jerk!

you should say, "well your accomplishments are because you’re a rich basrd! Imagine what my asian a could do if i had your $$$$!

Yeah, I hate asking everytime, but there’s this one rich guy who’s also applied to Penn ED, and he’s just really arrogant about it all. He bragged about his SAT scores (even though they were virtually the same as mine) and he literally told us that his essay is really good… I understand one being confident, but isn’t that crossing the line? Is it me or is he being kinda obnoxious about it.

I’m just paranoid about the ‘immigrant’ thing. I didn’t mention it and I don’t plan on mentioning it in any of my other applications, and I’m really hoping the adcoms can pick up subtle inferences like that. Maybe I’m not giving them enough credit…

P.S.- These are two different people.

you should play on this. you should write essays about this stuff. it could be very moving. just for the love of all that is holy have them edited.

Krabble88- While I’m not asian, I can see how that gets really annoying. I don’t think people mean harm by it and it’s not like you’re not getting in on your own merit- it’s just that schools look for diversity so us white kids are jealous. I knew a girl last year who was Guatemalan but didn’t check it off because she wants to get in on her own merit and she got in EA to Yale but I think her last name gives it away anyway.

Krabble, I get what you get to a lighter degree. In all my math/science classes, the Asians and Russians tend to dominate. I’m Russian and I always get comments like “D@m Russians takin over the class” or “Russians/Asians keep messin up the curve”

I just laugh

i get that crap a lot, but then again i call my friends weird nicknames, especially the catholic ones lol

There’s a big difference between hearing that a certain group messes up the curve, and being told what Krabble was - that Asians can only memorize not process info. Both are racist comments, really. The second one is blatantly so.

It’s comments like those that make the obstacles immigrants face real, and one of the reasons why, I personally would talk about it in those RD essays. I think you are giving too much credit to readers of your app. There’s no way they would know this stuff unless you tell them.

People who make comments like those are just insecure about themselves. You notice that the really accomplished kids don’t have much to say.

they’re just jealous

everyone’s just jealous at our skills =D

I’m the type of person who considers what people do and say by their intentions and not necessarily what they literally do or say. I have friends who joke about my ethnicity, but really, that’s all it is–a joke. However, when someone tries to trivialize someone else’s accomplishments so deliberately, I really do get offended.

I also figured something like that was out of jealousy, since I don’t hear others saying anything of the sort.

I don’t want to give adcoms the impression that I’m just a bitter Asian guy. It feels like Asians are antagonized for working hard and taking advantages of the opportunities that their parents never had (ironically, the American dream). It’s only small instances like this where I feel that my race is a factor in other’s impression of me (in an unfavorable way).

krabble,

bro, it all comes down to people wanting what others have. It’s called jealous. It’s like the poor people hating on the rich people who worked their ass off to build up wealth.

6 days, 23 hours, 47 minutes, 38 seconds

krabble: take it as a compliment. i’m azn and i wear glasses and everyone thinks i’m a genius (which i’m really not). it’s not a bad thing when ppl assume that ur smart because ur azn. it’s better then having ppl think that ur stupid cuz ur a blonde. (no offense to anyone)

I’m not asian or blonde but something I say the most blonde things in the world and sometimes i don’t understand the most basic things in class. it’s rarely something we’re doing in class…usually it’s like, a certain instruction or something like that. people think i’m really stupid but really smart at the same time. but i’d say a lot more stupid then i am smart shrugs

KRabble - i get those comments too. but u know what, people who say that stuff are just:

A) Jealous B) Insecure

Be happy with who you are and your accomplishments and ignore them.

um… i’m asian… but for the most part… im really whitewashed?

like… all my friends are white (my town is really irish / italian / catholic 60-70% and the rest are white anglo-saxon protestants)… and i generally avoid hanging out with the asian people at my school cause theyre wicked weird… umm… once… my friends cousin was visiting… and he was telling her how our town is really white… and he was like all my friends are white… he started naming them off… and he actually said my name… then a couple hours later i told him what he had done and he said… ‘whatever… youre more white than i am.’

it was kind of weird hearing it… but … i guess i can see where it comes from… im really protestant… im a country music guy (although i love hip-hop… out of all the artists in the world… i really only hate greenday)… im a far-right constitutionalist… i romanticize the southern confederacy… eh whatever… im a weird kid…

i never really get any crap from anyone… but my towns really quite a nice town… (except to black people for some reason… i dunno why… but our town police is really terrible… they habitually pull over black people… that is if there are any black people passing through the town… for no reason at all… its pretty bad and i find it pretty despicable…)

Well this has become quite the thread for self introspection…
