There’s arts and science programs in Pton as well.
Also, Pton has amazing Certificate programs- especially NeuroScience :)

ACT prep stuff:
Mrinal suggested Barrons36 and the Red Book.
The books are astronomically priced, so I asked my school to order them!

Lol, then, xnorth - what colleges are u applying to? Im also looking at physics, like I said. PM me ur list!

rew: I never suggested Barron’s 36. I personally think that PR’s Cracking the ACT is the best.

Oh my bad.
Been too long on the ACT prep forum. Mixing everything up.
Are u sure PR is better than Barron’s for ACT?

rew, I used Barron’s ACT 36. It was alright, but try the red book. PR’s is good too. A little better than Barron’s.

I honestly don’t think that one needs a real book to prepare for SAT I or ACT, but then that is just me.
North: Yes! And it sounds super amazing!!

Ppaayas: I am sure you are super smart. :p

Mrinal2207: Mocking much? How do I put that ‘tongue out’ smiley?

^ haha. : p without the spaces :p

Let’s talk about some colleges? I’ll start, what do you guys think about Yale? I can see some of you ready to write pages and pages about how amazing it is cough ppaayas, rew cough
But really, what attracts you to the college the most? What do you find most unattractive about it? Personally, I love the residential colleges system. But there was recently a post on the Yale forum that talked about “family nights” and how they kind of restrict you to having dinner in your own dining hall every sunday. What do you guys think about that?

P.S. Bring up any college and it’s different aspects you’d like to discuss with fellow desis ;)

LOL.
I’ll be straight forward.

Why I Like Yale? (I am assuming things as well) and what’s great about it?
Yale is situated in an amazing city, new haven. Getting “to” the college might be a strenuous task, but otherwise, it’s just fine.
The curriculum is very student-friendly.
One of my friends who got in for the class of 2015, told me that Yale is the best college she could be in. It’s residential colleges system is an amazing concept. People are welcoming and faculty is easily approachable. (but this may depend upon the major as well)
As for my possible major: biomed engineering- I was going through the Professors videos on iTunes U and I found it very interesting.
Also, it has an amazing dramatics major, and isnt exactly the “nerd” school like MIT or Pton.
Aaand. It’s has a better ERS( employee reputation score) than all the ivies. It has great placements whatsoever and the times worlds hundred best unis list proves so.

What I dont like about it?
It’s acceptance rate! But thats obvious , reason being that’s it’s an ivy.
However, I have noticed that it accepts most of full-paying, rich kids from India ( had a debate about the same here on CC as well) and it has almost no or very less intake of students from a non-feeder school.

P.S ignore the grammar-errors

Why don’t I see anyone applying for JHU or Duke? They both are Amazing for engineering or science related major.
I was gonna apply at JHU but then they give very little or no FA to students.

Someone did their research :P

I quite like the concept of “family night” sure sometimes it’ll be a pain in the ass, but unless the food is like REALLY BAD. (which being Yale, wont be) its okay :D

Do ivys, or any universities for that matter consider community service and EC’s?
Coz im pretty sure the adcoms, are aware about how easy it is to outsource jobs in India…
So what is the defining point of our applications?
Good grades an sat scores are taken as granted, but aside from essays what do we really have to show?

^ Do not assume that the adcoms assume you are cheating. If something sounds unbelievable, then they do know you are faking it. Otherwise, they expect you to exaggerate a bit but not outright lie because if you are caught lying, then the admission gets revoked.

@Texaspg: You just cleared a doubt of mine.

I like the Cultural Centers thing about Yale.

^ Adding: That very fact shouldn’t stop you from mentioning something truly unbelievable that you did, in fact, achieve. However, be sure to supplement this with ample proof in the additional information section.

For example, if you’ve authored a book, write the ISBN. If you’ve published a paper, mention the magazine and issue number. If you’ve interned at ISRO, write the email / phone number of the person who supervised your internship. And so on.

Thanks texaspg and tizil!
I had heard that they don’t wiegh the ecs as much, that’s all :)

North, am sure you heard volunteering and internships are not much weighed because the adcoms know that they can be used or written down by using source.
A friend of mine accepted at Pton told me the same thing.
