hehe i recieved the letter from IUB too…not too sure about it…

people tell me that IUB is very intese and well also good if u want to do an MS because the course there finishes in 3 years and they give lots of finaid and send a reasonably good amt of people to US for MS…
the only problem so to speak is that you should be sure that u want to study your @ss off for 3 years because its that intense…back me up here merc.

isn’t the language a big problem there??

AAAAAAAHHH!!!

THEY’VE CANCELLED THE SIMPSONS ON STAR WORLD!!!
:(

GOD HELP ME!!!

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!!!

D’oh!!.. ;)

“you should be sure that u want to study your @ss off for 3 years because its that intense.”

true…you do need to take 7-8 courses per semester, but its not stressful like it was in school, everything’s a bit more relaxed, you still get time for other stuff, obviously not as much as you would in a US unversity where u hardly take, what? 3-4 courses? But I would still say IUB is a really good place to study at, unless you plan to major in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science which is an unbelievably tough major…otherwise, for bio related subjects, IUB is really really good. I’m talking only about the school of sciences here, you are kind of better off if you major in a humanities subject, from what I feel, their schedules are less hectic than ours as they dont have 8hours of labs each week.

Btw language is NO problem at all. Everything is taught in english and everyone speaks english… you dont need to know one word in german to be here…

Where can I get a complete set of Simpsons (all seasons) ? I’ve been watching almost everyday for the past 2 and half years so I’ve seen most of the new stuff. And they just started showing the old shows… :(:(:(

What is IUB?

lol, its International University Bremen - Germany

AR87,
you seem to be a newb to CC… care to introduce yourself?

sure, umm i’m not exactly a newbie though
I’m Ananya, im a first yr Biochemical Engg student at IUB… I used to be ‘lurking’ around at CC quite a lot last year, and then forgot about it once college started But I’m kinda back now…
If anyone has any questions about IUB , i’ll be happy to help !
-Ananya

when do round II decisions come out?

Early March…by the second week I think, that’s when I got mine…

thanks! :)… eagerly waiting!

Ananya… u r Merc’s friend… I know u indirectly thru him :D

hehehe, yeahhh sure we know each other!!

[thru merc]

lol… she’s the one who STARTED the legacy we call the Indian Threads now… (ananya, what happened to your old ID ?)

Most of what she said about IUB is very true so I don’t have a lot to add. I can answer any specific questions though.

Also, the language problem. On campus you don’t even feel you’re in Germany but as soon as you go off campus the language barrier does surface. It’s helpful to take the intro german courses, though I have so far been able to get along pretty well without any German at all. So it’s practically no problem.

Another point to note is that IUB is tiny!! Only like 600 undergrads on the whole campus so by the end of the first semester everyone knows everyone else and you can literally refer any person on campus by their first name and people will recognize who you’re talking about. The campus itself is quite ok-sized so you can walk from anywhere to anywhere in <10 min. And it’s GREEEN… gorgeous and amazingly pretty. More than once I have stopped on my way to class and stared all around me thinking… “oh man!”

As for living conditions, IUB has probably the best housing for any university in the whole world and I can say so conclusively. Everyone has a single which are 1.5x bigger than doubles at other college dorms. Plus, private bathrooms. We have two sports halls, and most popular sports have many supporters, incl Cricket (ofcourse), soccer, basketball, beach volleyball (there’s an artifical beach VB court), inline skating etc. etc.

Academics: Well professors come from all sorts of places, many are German, it’s true, but most are from somewhere else. IUB has done a good job of recruiting professors from apt places including former HYPSM profs and the like… HOWEVER there ARE some professors who could be, let’s say, better… but I won’t say more on the subject.

Teaching facilities are world-class, not much to say about that (except that you MUST have a laptop or at least a desktop to survive here…). Pattern of teaching is exactly like the American system. As for the workload, it IS at least 1.5-2 times the workload at a US institution, but if you manage your time well, ie. don’t slack off, you CAN find time for a lot of fun stuff (right, ananya? ) This semester I have significantly more breathing space than last sem, even though I have like 10 courses. Mind you, none of the courses are easier or are less demanding than their US counterparts. In fact, most course are more rigorous, for example my CS class is equal to 3 CMU or 2 MIT classes. Same for Physics, which is equal to 2 MIT classes and Math where I already have 3 semester worth of credit in only 1 sem.

So to emphasize again: IUB is a very good place to study at. It’s not Harvard or Stanford but at the rate we are growing, I wouldn’t be surprized if it’s in the HYPSM league in barely 20-25 years.

EDIT: something about the food here. You will either like it or you won’t. Sometimes it’s great sometimes you have to order Ferri’s LifeSaver (ie. Pizza). But in general, food is restaurent-type, all-you-can-eat basis mostly Continental but many times indian, chinese, nepali, mexican (yuck) african (yuck^2) and other types of food.
